About the property

The Chestnuts - 3 Bedroom Ground Floor Barn Conversion

The Chestnuts is a lovely three bedroom, totally ground floor, barn conversion situated in the lovely village of Galmpton mid way between the South Devon coastal resorts of Paignton and Brixham. Galmpton has its own local shop for day to day needs and a respected local inn offering excellent food and refreshments. Also situated very close by is the River Dart which has a number of fantastic walks available as well as the world famous Greenway House, the family home of Agatha Christie now run by the National Trust. The cottage itself occupies a very large corner plot within a select residential development of similar conversions on the edge of the village. The Chesnuts' own private mature rear gardens are a delight and provide a very large space for guests to relax, dine al fresco or while away the hours in a lovely rural setting. The accommodation is very spacious and modern and is ideal for a family or couples travelling together looking for a holiday base conveniently located to explore all the attractions that South Devon has to offer. The owner is also happy to accept the four legged members of the family and the immediate area lends itself for great dog walking adventures. We are certain that The Chesnuts has become a popular destination for our clients.

We had a great time. The Chestnuts is well maintained, charming and conveniently located for a number of South Devon towns and attractions.

Very enjoyable holiday

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was very clean comfortable and well equipped although we couldn't find a teapot.

We did find it difficult walking through the garden to get into the cottage as we had an elderly gentleman with severe mobility difficulties. Having said that it certainly didn't spoil our stay in any way.

Many thanks

The Chestnuts

  • 4 of 5

The accommodation was good, the kitchen was well equipped and we had everything we needed. The garden was enclosed and a really good size for our dog to explore. Only thing was when we let him out to do his business at night it was difficult to see due to poor lighting but I'm sure this could be solved.

The dining table is located in the conservatory which is lovely but we had to move it into the lounge due to the room being very cold, but it was early October when we went, in the summer months it would be ideal.

The red sofa in the lounge wasn't very comfortable but the brown one was, I think this should be replaced as it's seen better days.

The rooms are a good size and we had a lovely stay, not really complaining but just suggesting a few things to make other people's stay more enjoyable. I would recommend this accommodation, it was so peaceful and quiet we hardly saw anyone.

A good find

Our 3 generation family of 6 had a comfortable week at The Chestnuts. It's a spacious bungalow with thee bathrooms, so there was never any congestion in the morning. The kitchen is well equipped and the lovely sunny garden is enclosed to keep young children safe. It's so peaceful and situated in a lovely village with a pub and a local shop, a few miles from Broadsands beach. In fact if you are happy to drive 10 mins then it's close to everywhere. It's also a short walk to the Agatha Christie house and close to the steam train railway so you get to hear the toot toot of the steam train during the day (pleasant not annoying).

The house definitely smells heavily of dog (maybe previous occupants had one) which isn't an issue for everyone, halfway through the week I either stopped noticing it or the smell went!

If you have young children it may be useful to take a blackout blind for their sunny bedroom, if it helps to keep them asleep! You may want to take plastic plates/cups etc. for your young children as the house only has really nice crockery!

We all agreed that we'd happily stay at The Chestnuts again as it's a lovely house in a great location.

Summer in Galmpton

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is well positioned, with all facilities as described. The garden is particularly good being extremely dog friendly. In general the location is very quiet especially in the evenings although there was some noise from the local small businesses during the day. As we had good weather we spent a lot of time outside, enjoying the garden, bat watching and listening to the owls as night fell. One omission for us was a barbecue which would have made eating outside easier.

Inside the cottage is comfortable, the only negative point was that some areas were not as clean as others, the conservatory in particular could do with a thorough clean.

We would consider this cottage again if we are in the area. There is plenty to do locally, lots of nice walks and the local pub is worth a visit especiallyon steak night.
