About Marilys Scheindel

My family of four (plus our pooch) fell in love with the Portland area during a vacation in the year 2001 and we knew that we would someday find a way to move here. We made a lifestyle move in 2005, moving here with no family, no friends, no jobs anywhere on the East Coast, leaving behind our entire universe in the midwest.

I knew that I wanted to make a professional career change to own and manage vacation rental properties because it combines my passions for houses, decorating and hosting people--something I have done my whole adult life. I love my career and have since purchased two other homes in the area that I own and operate as furnished rental homes. One is on this website--Property #4019326.

Marilys Scheindel purchased this house in 2005

Why Marilys Scheindel chose Falmouth

Our realtor started looking for homes for us and stubbled across a "for Sale by Owner" ad. She called me immediately and said I needed to take a look--that this house wouldn't last long. We saw it the next day and absolutely fell in love with the house, the views and the neighborhood and purchased the house that night. Our realtor still tells me she is jealous that we got this house and not her! We knew that this was a house we would keep in our family forever and my kids still debate who will get this house "someday". We purchased it in 2005 and hope to keep it in our family forever.

What makes this house unique

The house has a very magical "treehouse" feeling to it and a very happy vibe and feeling about it that most of my guests comment on. It's really cheerful and the views are incredible! I always feel good when I am in this house and when it's vacant, which is rare, I go to this house for a quiet day of work. I just feel good and happy when I am in this house and the neighborhood is so quiet and peaceful--I love it and so do my guests!

Winter Getaway--A Family Tradition

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and our (now) teenage children have been staying at this charming home for a couple of long winter weekends each year, usually in December and then sometimes again in February. I originally discovered this home a few years ago and surprised my wife with a Valentines getaway. We enjoyed our time in the Portland (and Freeport) area, as well as our evenings in the home, so thoroughly that we decided we needed to share it with our kids. Since that initial stay, it has become a special tradition for our family and we try to reserve a Christmas shopping stay each year in December; and then, when the home is available, we will often return in February to break up the winter (and my wife and girls enjoy the post-Christmas bargains in Freeport). We truly can’t say enough about the comforts of this home and the special extras provided by the owners, Marilys and Robert. The home is so welcoming and inviting in every way. We usually arrive in the evening and the heat is always set to our ideal temperature upon arrival; the fireplace often has a fire going, the lights are on; there are flowers, chocolates, etc. It’s quite a cozy home, very warm, has comfortable furniture for gathering by the fire at night, and very good mattresses, something we have not always encountered in other rental homes. We also find the location to be perfect for our needs. The area is unusually peaceful and quiet, which is a nice retreat from our fast-paced Boston life, but there are theaters and coffee shops nearby that our kids really appreciate when my wife and I want some quiet time at the house. We always look forward to our favorite Portland restaurants and the breakfast places in Falmouth are the best we’ve found in the area. We just reserved our December stay and look forward to seeing all of the changes the owners made to the house this past summer. We truly need to thank you both for helping us create a special family tradition that we all look forward to each year. Thanks again for everything and we look forward to seeing you very soon.

An exceptional rental, sure to impress any visitor

  • 5 of 5

With parents visiting, I spent a lot of time looking for a place close by where family could all easily visit. This wonderful cottage was perfect in every way. The owner responed quickly to numerous emails, and was beyond helpful in making this a truly unique experience. She put a ready light log in the fire and had the cottage immaculate upon arrival. The views from the living room, dining room and upstairs master bedroom look right onto the ocean. The expectionaly comfortable living room is arranged to entertain a large group, and the adirondack chairs in the backyard and upstairs porch are wonderful ways to enjoy the view. We grilled outside one night for dinner, and Marilys conveniently had a large bag of charcoal to use.

Her amazing attention to detail is exceptional, from the beautiful floor designs to painted antiques. She clearly had a lot of fun decorating this cottage and we all spent a good deal of time admiring her artwork and designs. My favorite was her coffee table: a handcrafted Maine lobster trap, with an antique painted door over the top. She also filled the house with brightly painted lobster buoys, starfish and seashells.

We had a wonderful walk around the town, stoping at the Town Landing store for local gossip on the weather and a good cup of coffee. We drove to Mackworth Island, a few miles down the road, and had a wonderful hike. We were close enough to Freeport for shopping and enjoyed an excellent dinner at Fore Street in downtown Portland. Everything was close by, but we could have stayed at the house and been completely happy.

I recommend this to visitors, and to local families who want a house close by for friends and family. We all truly enjoyed our stay.

Best Experience Possible!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot express enough how much I loved this home and our experience. My fiance was deployed when he gave me the go to begin planning for our vacation once he returned. We knew we wanted to do a New England vacation as he is from Maine and has family around that area. However, we wanted to experience Maine the true vacation way! When I found this beach cottage, I was blown away from the pictures. Once I contacted that owner, I was even more blown away. She was kind, helpful, and responsive during the planning process. When we arrived to the home, there were no surprises...well, actually if even possible, the home looked even better than in the pics! It was fully stocked. It was comfortable yet still very nice. We cooked dinner most nights at the house and the kitchen was excellent! We even cooked up lobsters. My fiance used the grill often! The walk to the ocean is literally 2 minutes and the walk to the cute store is just about the same distance. The neighborhood is beautiful. We drove to Portland, Saco, York Beach, Old Orchard Beach, and Freeport. The owners have great beach supplies that we took full advantage of and are very appreciative of. We are a blended family with children of all ages and all of our kids enjoyed it! A couple nights, extended family drove down to have dinner with us and they were impressed too!!

A happy cottage

  • 5 of 5

Location was enough to make this house a no brainer… but when walked in the house was nothing short of immaculately clean, happy and bright. And the views! On top of all of this the owner is a delight. Warm, friendly, knowledgable, and she made us a cake. Five stars across the board.

The house comfortably sleeps 6, but the two sleeping in the twin bed room had to keep their suitcases downstairs, because it is a tight squeeze. It worked for us, would be perfect for a family traveling with kids, but worth noting for groups of adults.

Overall, we strongly recommend this happy cottage - we loved our time there.

Wonderful Maine Vacation Rental

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful time with my family in this adorable very clean, well stocked and beautifully maintained seaside cottage. There was the perfect amount of space for the 5 of us and the views of the Marina were gorgeous! Also, the landlord was very accommodating and helpful with anything we needed. House was only about a 10 minute drive to Portland so was very conveniently located. I would definitely stay there again next time we are in Portland!

Couldn't ask for anything more!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 (1 year old new walker, 3 year old) spent a week in this amazing home. The location is perfect for early morning fishing and puddle jumping at the town landing, excursions into Portland for activities, meals and shopping, or day trips to points slightly north or south. We made use of Marilys's unparalleled guide to the area and did wonderful hikes with the kids close to the cottage, trips to the lighthouses and parks, baseball games, museums and more. The house had EVERYTHING we could need for the kids which made vacation much more of a vacation since the packing was minimal. We have loved Portland for years and this is a sure reason to keep coming back. The house is bright, spacious with nooks for people to tuck themselves for reading. There are the homey and convenient touches right and left. We prepared about 2 out of 3 meals a day in the house given the ages of our kids and never ran into a utensil/pot/pan that was missing. My 3yo is already planning our return trip.
