Hi - My husband and I, our twins Jack and Bobby (pictured) and our two furry four legged kids Nikki and Rocco love to go hiking and fishing. The private and quiet location of this house is perfect for relaxing but still close to outdoor activities. We hope you can enjoy the house and area as much as we do!

Kelley Hagerty purchased this chalet in 2005

Why Kelley Hagerty chose Black Mountain

The worst mistake we've ever made...

  • 1 of 5

Renting this house was a nightmare. Twice a year I rent houses from VRBO, and this is the only time we hav had this kind of experience. It was horrible. The drive up the mountain takes forever, and the driveway is so steep, my Jeep Cherokee actually began to slide backwards. there's no parking on the street and hardly any parking in the driveway. There is no property to speak of but the house itself which sits precariously below a steep range, creating a dark feeling in the house at all times. The picture you are viewing is a very narrow side deck, there is almost no room to sit outside and the deck overlooks the driveway. Everything in this house was problematic. We didn't have hot water for the first 48 hours we were there, so couldn't take showers or wash our dishes. The owner told us to do all sorts of things to make it work. Finally, on the day before we were told to leave, the plumbers came, they said the filters hadn't been changed in a very long time. One person put her suitcase in her room the morning we were coming in because she didn't understand she couldn't do that, and the owner went bezerk, even after we apologized profusely. The bottom floor is unusable, very moldy, the windows open to the dirt outside and the ceilings are very low. Everything smells down there, and it is dirty and very close. There's a bee infestation problem and the screens don't work on the sliders in the great room, which is the only way to get fresh air in there, and many windows don't open to screens. She told us to put on the a.c. instead of opening the doors. It was October, we had wanted to come enjoy the fall air. It takes almost an hour to get to Asheville from this house, and you can not walk from the property, the roads are too narrow. It is very cramped inside and generally one of the worst places I have ever stayed. Kelley is a complete nightmare to deal with. Not only did we have a terrible stay, and she double booked on the last day we were there. I had paid until Monday and on Sunday at 2;15 she wrote this email: "Why are you still there? My cleaning crew needs to come in. We have people coming at 4!" In ONE HOUR we had to get all of our things packed, clean the kitchen, hightail it out of there and find places to stay during the busiest tourist season in the area. We did the laundry, made the kitchen spic and span and did everything on the extensive list for packing up the house. And after all that she gave us a bad review.

Peaceful Retreat

  • 4 of 5

We had a group of 9 at the Chalet. The home was very spacious and accommodating. It is equipped with everything you could possible need as far a cookware, games, books, excess linens, etc. The master bedroom is beautiful and features a large Jacuzzi tub and direct access to a comfortable patio that opens up to the deck. All other rooms in the house are cozy and quaint. The living room has breathtaking mountain views and the double sided fireplace was a big hit with the whole family. Downstairs has an entirely separate living space equipped with full kitchen. Any inconveniences we experienced, Kelly was more than accommodating and very quick to reply. I would highly recommend this property for a relaxing retreat!

Great House Chalet Woodhaven

  • 4 of 5

Overall we definitely enjoyed the place. It had plenty of room for our family and the kids to spend Christmas. We enjoyed the hot tub and relaxing on the deck. Great view and great family fun. It did take us a couple of days to figure out the hot water situation. Seems to work great if you turn on the master shower or sink first then the rest of the faucets put out hot water. Tried working through the instructions but wasn't always successful. We enjoyed the stay and would use the house again. Owner communicates well and everything was as it should be concerning linens and towels. We had a house full with some family coming in early and leaving and others coming late and staying the remaining time. We just wish it would have snowed over Christmas. Fireplace was excellent. Would recommend bringing an additional wide baby gate if you have little ones. We weren't so confident in the cleaning crew that cleaned the house before we got there and left it in much better shape than they did. We had lunch at Phil's Pit B-Que and the Trail Head Restaurant in Black Mountain both were excellent and would go again. We really enjoyed our Christmas on the Mountain.

Peaceful Rejuvination with a view

  • 5 of 5

This home is great for large or small groups. There were several unexpected amenities such as TP and hand soap, Kleenex, matches, and even a vast DVD, book and children's toys collection. If you want to keep a fire burning in the winter I would suggest bringing your own wood however there is a pile of Kinlin and wood provided. We spent most of our time on the super comfy couch in front of the gorgeous double-sided fireplace and enormous tv. In addition to the peaceful living area the jetted tubs make it quite the place for a peaceful and relaxing retreat. Everything was in working condition and very user-friendly. Do prepare yourself for the driveway. If you're not accustomed to mountain driving then this driveway may seem intimidating however a Honda accord made it up in the rain with no problem. Kelley was extremely understanding and helpful in booking this last minute trip. We appreciate her courtesy and willingness to work with us! Would absolutely recommend this place to anyone and hope to go back one day.

Great Family Gathering Place

  • 5 of 5

Our family absolutely enjoyed our stay at Chalet Woodhaven. It was everything we hoped for based on the descriptions and reviews. This was the first time we have vacationed with such a large group, there were 19 of us and a few dogs, and we never felt like we were walking all over each other. There was plenty of room for everyone. It was clean and felt very homey. I loved that there were two fully functioning kitchens so that those who wanted to bake cinnamon rolls didn't have to wait on those who wanted quiche. There were plenty of places to go and see and do within a reasonable drive of 10 to 30 minutes. Some of our group loved to wake early to go hiking and watch the sun come up on trails not far from the house while others enjoyed their trips into Asheville to learn about it's history and enjoy the arts, architecture and the restaurants. We would certainly recommend this property to our friends and family but with warning about the steep driveway. I will confess, it was worth the anxiety of the climb to stay in this perfect mountain escape.

Best weekend ever!

  • 5 of 5

My group of 10 stayed here extremely comfortably. The house was amazing, the mountains were wonderful, and the town of Black Mountain was as charming as ever. 10/10, would recommend.
