About Ellen Thorndike
We live in Stowe, Vermont, but the charms of the Cape have drawn us there for 30 years. We stayed at the house while my father was alive, and inherited it when he passed away in 2006. It continues to be a family treasure for us.
Ellen Thorndike purchased this House in 2006
Why Ellen Thorndike chose Harwich Center
The house, grounds, and location have earned the nickname "The Fun House" among the neighbors. Badminton, barbecuing, ping pong, big screen viewing in the Double Deuce (i.e., the garage converted into a lounge and play area), and water fights with the hose keep things jumping.
What makes this House unique
In addition to the on-site activities, nearby activities including the bike path (which runs along the boundary of the property behind screening), tennis courts and pickle ball courts, childrens playground across Oak Street at Brooks Park, golf courses, and beaches (take your pick - Nantucket Sound, Atlantic Ocean, fresh water ponds, or Cape Cod Bay) are readily accessible.

We had another wonderful week at the Cape House.
This was our 9th year staying here. Everything was clean and neat, and some places were freshly painted. We are always impressed by how well the house is maintained. The location by the park, the bike trail, stores , restaurants, and beaches is ideal. The garage, turned rec room, has a ping pong table, flat screen TV, couches, and chairs. It also holds sporting equipment for use in the spacious yard, or taking to the beach!
My family says that our week here is the highlight of the year!
We Love This House!!
My sister and I have come to Harwichport for our family reunion since 1993. This year was exceptional because my parents had their great grandchildren and many out of state and country, grandchildren coming. We knew that there was going to be a lack of room at the beach house so we started to look for another house and luckily, Carolyn found the 34 Oak St. house. 6 Bedroom's 2 bathrooms and a great out door shower. We chose this home because of the guest capacity and it's location to activities but the Double Deuce was the icing on the cake and the center of attraction for the kids every night. This home has everything that you need for Cape vacation. Just bring linens and towels.
Alan and Ellen made the arrangements simple and everything they say on HomeAway is as described and even better. Clean, nice beds, plenty of utensils, nice cookware, washer / dryer and a great location.
Thank you so much to the Thorndike's for letting us stay at your awesome home!
We keep coming back
We have rented 34 0ak Street for the second half of June every year for the last 10 years. It has lots of bedrooms so we invite family and friends every year and never run out of space. Our grandchildren for a long time thought this was where we lived, because they got so used to seeing us here. We like the Cape Cod vibe, hiking, eating out, exploring the Cape and having our annual family vaction here. Love the big yard and the family badmitten games.
This property was perfect for our active group.
We have an active group of children and grandchildren, and the lawn activities and games kept everybody happy!
GREAT FAMILY HOUSE!!
The house upon arrival was like we had expected after reading about it, and then even better. Before arrival we had excellent assistance from the owners, from detailed description about the house, to where to see 4th July fireworks in Boston to how to obtain tickets for the Red Socks!
House itself was inviting, cosy and very comfortable indeed, We were a group of nine, and felt we each had enough space to withdraw if needed, and enough space in the general area for all to be there.
Extra help was given in providing bed linnens and towels, as we were coming from Europe, so could not bring ourselves.
Outside shower and garage for the youngsters were fantastic extras, which added again a lot of value to our stay!
The garden and sportsfields on other side of the road also gave a lot of pleasure.
We loved Cape Cod, and will definitely visit again one year, where we hope to be able to stay in the same house.
Furthermore we will undoubtly recommend the house to friends and family.
We tried wakeboarding on Nauset Beach, sight seeing in Provincetown, whale watching, and enjoyed Chatham both as village and as beach.
Harwich is ideally located between the warm water beaches of Nantucket Sound and the crashing Atlantic surf of the beautiful Cape Cod National Seashore beaches. Spend time exploring marine life on the tidal sand bars in Brewster at low tide. Harwich Village evokes a quieter Cape Cod, yet is a short drive from all the Cape has to offer. Great golfing, fishing, shopping, antiquing, tennis, playground close by.
Other Activities: Backyard badminton, croquet, ping pong, volleyball; tennis at courts in Brooks Park; golf at three nearby courses; beach activities of all types at ocean, bayside, and Nantucket Sound.
