About Adam Breen

We bought and renovated this house in 2010 when we were working in the holidays business. It was already split into two apartments so we kept the layout but changed and updated almost everything else. We have tried to marry the original charm of the building with modern standards of comfort.

The upstairs gite is accessed by an external staircase. It is totally private from downstairs, which we used to keep as our own. Unfortunately, life and work keep us away from the house and the Ardeche so we will be letting the downstairs gite in 2015. We have some great local help to take care of meeting guests, cleaning and little problems that may occur.

Why Adam Breen chose Vallon Pont d'Arc area

We weren't really looking for a renovation when we bought but were captivated by the house. It has so much potential and when we considered the location - close to but not actually in the town - we had to buy it. It was a lot of work to get the place up to scratch but we're really pleased with the results.

What makes this house unique

The Ardèche is a place of peaceful, rugged beauty and charm. We have tried to make our house fit in...

The greatest benefit of this house is it's close-but-not-too-close location. Walk for 10 minutes in either direction and you're either right in town or right in the country. Stay put and you can look at both over a nice aperitif on the balcony...

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

Excellent property five minuets walk from the centre of Vallon. We stayed in the upstairs apartment, we were surprised with the size of the property, really comfortable. Vallon an excellent base for the area, lots of things to do for all the family. The gorges are amazing a must to visit, lots of places to hire kayaks locally. Great bars and places to eat within minuets walk from the house. Cycling great from the door.

Housekeeper Corrine was lovely, we would love to return again..

Excellent gite but garden a mess.

  • 3 of 5

When we arrived the neighbour with the key was out and we had to wait quite a while for her to return.

Fortunately the people in the other gite invited us to join them for a drink.

The gite was excellent (no corkscrew though) and clean to a high standard. We were disappointed with the garden which to put it mildly was a mess.

The photograph on line showed a nicely mowed lawn but when we got there it was the opposite. Also it was disconcerting having to negotiate various

areas of concrete to get up the stairs. Our outdoor table and chairs area didn't have any lights unlike the other one so why was that?

It was a quiet location which we appreciated and only a few minutes easy walk into town. We enjoyed touring the area (despite the hot weather) and eating out in town (large choice of restaurants).

Owner's Response: Hi and thanks for the review. We are really pleased that you enjoyed the gite and have to admit that the garden was not quite as we would have liked it. I plan my regular visits to tend to the place around the seasons and this year an unseasonably wet June meant that things which would normally have been parched were growing amok! Rest assured that a mow, strim and secateur butchering now have things back into shape! Not that this helps you, so here is a €50 off voucher for your next trip. As far as I am aware, you are the first person to have not found things to be 100% to your liking. I took a picture as I left this morning for you which I will happily send on. It looks very much like the one on the website. I'm not sure what you mean about the concrete but thought that I should explain the lights - they are a solar experiment, due to be rolled out to both gites (if they do well) next year. Sorry too that you did not find a corkscrew. Each gite has two but we found all four upstairs on our visit - the peril having sociable guests I suppose! I hope that this helps and once again, thanks for coming and we are really glad that it was a positive visit overall. Adam & Corinne.

Charmante propriété au coeur de l'Ardèche !

  • 5 of 5

Great location, charming gite

  • 4 of 5

The gite is more charming that the photos on the website suggest. Great inside and outside space, with charming swings. Nicely decorated inside. Lovely and quiet yet 5 minutes walk into the small town to restaurants and local shops (great for star gazing if you walk back at night) and larger supermarket on the other side of town is still really close. Can walk to great tree trail place where you traverse courses through the trees (Vert Tige), hike on the plateau or hike down to a number of "beaches" at the bottom of the gorge. Can easily arrange to kayak through the gorge.

Listing was accurate - note there is no washing machine. We didn't notice this and we probably wouldn't have booked if we'd realised BUT in the end we were really glad of our booking "error" because we loved the place. Don't let it put you off.

Lovely English lady greeted us. Property was clean and reasonably well maintained. Owner was great to communicate with and happily provided information and suggestions by email and was contactable throughout.

Well placed gite in the Ardeche

  • 4 of 5

Very well placed gite on the outskirts of the major tourist town of Vallon Pont-d'Arc - quiet area yet just 5 minutes walk into town. Made very welcome on arrival by English ex-pat who lives locally and at the end of the stay by the English owner of the gite. Reasonably well equipped with lovely covered dining area outside. Wifi access very useful though Orange TV box range of English speaking programmes was limited (though understand a satellite dish may be installed soon). Plenty of parking and good for touring around the Ardeche. Lots of walks on well marked paths - gite has a copy of the detailed Carte De Randonnee map though we also bought the Topo-Guide (cost 8 Euro's) of 22 circuits for walkers from the towns tourist office. Also the town is a centre for kayaking.

Sehr schöne Wohnung

  • 5 of 5

This rental property is in a quiet area, right where the lively town of Vallon Pont d'Arc meets the beautiful countryside of the southern Ardèche.

The town is most famous for being at the entrance to the mighty Ardèche Gorge. The gorge is a deep, winding canyon that has been cut into the limestone over millennia and features the incredible Pont d'Arc - a naturally formed bridge of rock over the river. Canoeists and walkers flock to the Gorge each year to brave the rapids and walk the riverside trails.

Away from the Gorge there is plenty more to see and do from sunbathing on the riverside beaches to numerous adventure activities. These include mountain biking, horse riding, treetop ropes courses, climbing, canyoning and caving to name a few.

The fields and forests are full of peaceful, well marked walking trails whilst the winding roads make for many a scenic drive or cycle.

Beneath this blissful countryside lie miles and miles of caves - the most famous of which is the Grotte Chauvet. Discovered in the 1990's the Chauvet cave rewrote the history books by showing that neolithic man lived in the Ardèche 36,000 years ago. A new UNESCO exhibition centre opened in 2015.
