If you're looking for a romantic waterfront getaway for two, or a charming cabin for a small family, you'll love 'Sunfish Cottage.' This rustic property sits right on the shores of St. Margaret's Bay and is located at the end of a forested private lane on the Aspotogan Peninsula on Nova Scotia's south shore. You'll enjoy the comfortable main floor bedroom and sunny family room/kitchen combination with a cathedral ceiling. There's also a small upstairs loft (accessible by a pull-down ladder).
Grill your steaks or seafood on the deck overlooking the water. Fish from the rocks, launch your kayak, hike the country lanes, or bike the scenic Aspotogan Peninsula. Whatever you decide to do, you'll look forward to coming back to this lovely cottage at the end of the day.
Vacationers' Paradise: Whether you while away your afternoons admiring the waterfront views or just enjoy using the cottage as a base for touring the beautiful South Shore, you'll love 'Sunfish.' The cottage is located minutes from the charming village of Hubbards where you'll find delightful restaurants and lobster dinners-- as well as groceries, gas, banking, etc.. A scenic 20-minute drive along the lovely Aspotogan Peninsula will bring you to Chester, the hilly village that is the yachting capital of the South Shore. To the west beyond Chester lies the World Heritage Town of Lunenburg, which is the home base of the tall ship Bluenose II. And you won't want to miss Halifax, a delightful international harbour city that features maritime museums, fine restaurants, parks, theatres and shopping experiences galore.
This place is perfect. Cute cottage. The equipment inside is complete. The view to the sea well worth the go. The location is ideal to discover Nova Scotia. Close to Halifax, Chester, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay. The colours of the fall are magnificent.
Sunfish Cottage was absolutely fantastic. The cottage was bigger then we anticipated and the view of the bay was just beautiful. It was great being able to see seals swimming around in the bay. It is very peaceful and quiet at the cottage so if your looking for a relaxing time I would highly recommend this place. Planning to return for 2 weeks next time.
When you rent a house or cottage, it's not going to feel just like home -that's the idea!
There will be little things you miss, or just don't like at all. I think the best travelers are
probably those who can easily adapt to new surroundings and enjoy the experience.
I'm not sure I'm one of them, but I'm trying.
Sunfish Cottage is small on space and a bit worn from all its previous renters, but still
The road down to the cottage is hard-packed stone and dirt - and the last 2 miles are
kind of scary the first time through. I would not recommend arriving in the dark.
It's a great location for day trips to tourist spots, a nice quiet place at the end of a busy
day. It's so quiet you really have to get out and DO something, even if it means
navigating that stone and dirt road!
I was really grateful for wifi in the evening - the TV service is better than nothing,
but (as noted in the VRBO description) not great.
We had dinner at Trellis Cafe in Hubbards, and it was wonderful. We tried to go to the
Saturday Market - but found there was no place to park - if you want to park there,
arrive early. Lots of people parked at the nearby grocery store and walked to the Barn.
Other guests wrote in the guest book that they had seen seals, deer, sea otters, and
other wildlife. We saw a few sea gulls and a calico cat. I'm sure it depends on when
you are there. Be sure to bring binoculars so you can tell if those brown spots way off
at the point are seals - might be!
My husband tried fishing off the rocks, but no luck - the guy at the rental cabin 2 doors
to the left had better luck - mackerel and lobster!
The cottage is well-supplied with linens, towels, pots and pans, dishes, dish detergent,
etc - and a few basics like salt and pepper grinders, steak seasoning, sugar and tea.
You can get pretty much anything you need in Hubbards - the grocery store is not huge,
but good - there's also a pharmacy and a hardware store. Bring your own drinking
water until you decide if you like the well water. Good hot water for showers.
Beware of the hole along the edge of the pavement as you turn right onto rt 329 from
Southwest Cove Rd - we ruined a tire when we didn't see it and drove into it.
We are in our early 70s. We rented Sunfish Cottage August 28th-September 4th, 2016.
Very happy with our experience - thanks, Sally!
Sunfish Cottage is exactly as described by the owners. The directions to the cottage were good and it was easy to find.
The cottage is clean and well maintained. The kitchen is well equipped with all the necessities for cooking and BBQing.
The cottage is situated on the north shore of Owls Head Island, surrounded by rocks, pines, and a spectacular view of St. Margaret Bay. During our stay, it was quiet, secluded, and undisturbed peace. It is immersed in fresh sea air, wind through the pines, surf on the shore, and the calls of the seabirds.
It is ideally located for short day trips to such picturesque places as: Chester, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Peggy’s Cove, Crescent Beach, and Halifax. Beautiful beaches and wonderful seafood restaurants are only minutes away.
We highly recommend Sunfish Cottage. We would certainly like to stay there again during our next visit to Nova Scotia.
