About Constance Chatfield-Taylor
My family has lived in the area for 100 years, continually active in horses and Virginia history. I am a UVA alumna, play polo in the area, and other than living in San Francisco for 5 years in the early '80s, I am a Virginian through and through. There's work too - I am co-owner of a communications company, Flying Colors Broadcasts, in nearby Washington, DC. The Mill House spoke to me in 2008 when I saw that it was for sale - there was just something about it, it seemed magical and as if it had a story to tell. My plate full, it did not happen, but I didn't stop thinking about it. And in 2012, it was on the market again and this time it stood up and shouted, so we bought it and brought it back to health. We had to pull up old floor boards (carefully so we could reuse), replace joists, put on a new porch, build walks and a terrace, replace appliances, expose interior stone walls - and yes, fix the magical pool. It now is available for others to experience the Mill House magic.
Constance Chatfield-Taylor purchased this House in 2012
Why Constance Chatfield-Taylor chose Upperville
My sons and I play polo in the area, and its a great jumping off point for anything in the country. Pantherskin Creek is captivating and the Mill House is the kind of place that simply 'pulls you outside', whether its to walk near the creek during the full moon, to sit at the pool watching fireflies, or to sit by the fire pit, which is in the location of the original well. Its an 'any season' house, the great room in the winter is large and comfortable with the kitchen at one end. The stone kitchen at the end of the porch is heaven in summer, with a wall of windows and cool stone floors. Its a place to bring people together, and explore the countryside or just stay on the property. Friends have come out with extensive plans, but have decided to swim, read and sit on the porch, saying 'we'd rather stay right here...'
What makes this House unique
It has a low water bridge over Pantherskin Creek, which is high in spring and summer, low in August. You'll find yourself taking a 'coffee walk' in the morning, it just happens. And summer lunches on the screened porches are wonderful. There are so many places to read, visit, or just enjoy. You can occasionally hear the horses over the fence, or trumpet swans flying overhead in the spring. The sounds and light and views are restful and peaceful.

We loved it
The Mill House and the grounds are beautiful. The house is well equipped and has so much charm - it is spacious and perfect for families. There are so many beautiful places to sit outside, including two screened porches/terraces that are perfect for meals and evenings. There’s also a beautiful outdoor kitchen that adds really helpful space. The pool is wonderful and it’s surroundings are so picturesque. We couldn’t have been more pleased.
Perfect space for a girls weekend. This property has so many spots to sit around to eat, drink and be merry. We had planned to check out some wineries but enjoyed the property and pool so much we stay put! Owner was very responsive!
Relaxing Week in Virginia Wine Country
We had a terrific week relaxing at this property in VA wine country. The house was lovely, spacious, and quiet. The owner, Constance, met us upon arrival and walked us through the house and grounds sharing appreciated details, history, and instructions for our week. We would highly recommend this property for a week away or a cozy fall weekend by the fireplace. We will be back! Thank you again Constance for making us feel so very welcome in your home. Whether relaxing by the pool, napping in the outside pavilion, or visiting nearby wineries, this is a "R&R" type of place. S&C
We had the most wonderful experience at this beautiful historical home. Every space is cozy and beautiful. The home’s owner made sure we were completely comfortable and was very generous with instructions and provisions. The pool was clean and beautiful, and the grounds are stunning. We wish we could have stayed longer!!
Beautiful historic property. Quiet area. You can hear the brook babbling on the back porch. Had a girls weekend here and it is close to winery and perfect for that type of event. Enough room to host several couples or families as well. The owner was so great and gave us information on the property and area. We plan to stay here again.
Beautifully enchanting place. All these wonderful reviews are true. Everything from the history to the peaceful relaxing nights to the close vicinity to wineries the refreshing pool, outdoor bonfire and the outdoor room. This is a wonderful place to stay with family or friends. Our 17 month old loved the outdoors and all the animals inside the house (wall paper, figurines). We had such a wonderful time. One of the best places I’ve stayed by far! The owner is also kid and available for recommendations and any concerns. Would recommend to anyone!
