Fernando & Paula Vieira purchased this cottage in 2006
Quinta de milhafres was named after two couples of black kites (milhafres in portuguese) that chose the place as their habitat. It is a privilegied location of these birds of prey watching, whose similitary with the northern goshawk (açor in portuguese) is the origin of the archipelago's designation.
Quinta de milhafres, a 11,500 sm area from the regional road to the sea, was once property of the district governor João Francisco Medeiros de Bettencourt . Chroniclers regist the presence of this portuguese noble family on the island since the 18th century. Vila franca do campo museum is located in botelhos manor-house, owned by the same family, which reveals its economical and political outstanding position.
Acquired by its current owners in 2006, the manor house is recent (1995) built in the place of a former factory of chicoria, vegetal used as coffee substitute.

We had a great & relaxiong time on your beautiful island.
Quinta de Milhafres offered us a relaxing home port. Thanks for the organic grown tomatoes & figos.
The local beaches are a must. Ask Fernando & Paul of the 250 step beach. Private & scenic.
We loved the beaches of Água d'Alto & Ponta de Pirâmide.
Lagoa das Furnas, Sete Cidades & Mosteiros are lovely excursions but the lasting impressions of São Miguel are ones of friendly, hospitable, warm & genuine people. The peaceful nature of it's people should be emvlated worlwide. We will take this back home with us.

Great Hosts. They provided information regarding the island, what to see and do and where to eat. The location is central to all parts of the island. The property is peaceful with great views of the ocean. We hiked every day, Furnas hike, Sete Cidades and Lagoon hike, Lagoa Do Fogo (best), Salto Do Prego (beautiful waterfall). Restaurants were great, Ponta Do Garajau, Restaurant Associacao (best steak) and Atlantico (no credit card). Many viewpoints and bathing areas along the island, best to wear a swim suit all day. The hosts also provided us with tomatoes, eggs, bananas, and cucumbers. Kitchen was fully stocked with needed utensils. Thank you for sharing your property.
Fernando and Paula were incredibly kind and helpful hosts providing everything we needed to start our visit and even meeting us upon an early arrival. They gave us great tips on where to visit and eat - the latter proving to be excellent suggestions we hadn't heard of. The house was very clean, had hot water, and a kitchen with all the basics. The view from the edge of the property is phenomenal and the garden makes for a great place for star gazing. This location is perfect for visiting both sides of the island while being outside of the city.
First...a shout out to Paula and Fernando who opened up their home and made us feel like honored guests. They are so kind. You can tell that they have a passion for meeting new people. We did have some problems finding the rental, not due to the map, but because we weren't used to streets that are marked with street names on the buildings and change names so frequently. You are so busy making sure you don't get hit or hold up traffic it is hard to spend time looking for street names! Fernando was kind enough to stay on the phone and guide us in from the city center. Once there, though, it was easy to get around!
Second, what the pictures fail to show is how lovely the property is! The views are amazing. You can walk all the way down to the ocean, although it is steep! And the bottom is quite rocky. The rental itself is a standalone unit on their property so you have privacy.
We stayed here in March and enjoyed our stay greatly. The property is beautiful and quiet. Fernando went out of his way to make sure we had what we needed.
Fantastic situation where even in January you can sit on the balcony high above the crashing waves and enjoy a meal and glass of wine
Very genteel hosts who took great care of us and shared dinner one evening
We heard all about the Azores and tried the fruits from the garden which were delicious
When my husband announced that he wanted to visit The Azores I must admit I had no idea where it was and had to look in the atlas. When we then discovered that Ryanair would be starting a direct flight from Stansted we started our search for accommodation and booked Quinta de Milhafres after reading all the rave reviews, this was our best decision.
Sao Miguel is the most beautiful Island full of lovely people and gorgeous flowers everywhere you look. As it is quite small once you have your hire car (you really only need a small car as previously mentioned some of the roads are very narrow) you can easily navigate it and in a week get a flavour of all the major tourist sites. To really get to know it would take much longer though and we did not manage to get to any of the other Islands although will definitely go back to try to do that next year.
The cottage is in the grounds of Fernando and Paula's wonderful garden this was a major highlight of our stay, we only ate out one night during the week because the view could not be bettered. Inside the cottage is small just one room really but very clean and comfortable for two people. There is a good working kitchen with everything you will need for self-catering and a large well stocked supermarket in the nearby village. The bedroom is separated from the lounge by a half wall and has a huge double bed. The TV has some English speaking channels but to be honest we spent most of time outside coming in only when it was dark, there is also good Wi-Fi access allowing us to keep in touch with family and access island information. There is a small bathroom with shower.
The flight from Stansted arrives quite late and we were worried about arriving in the dark, however Fernando sent us good instructions and he and his wife waited up for us to show us the facilities. The next morning when we woke and saw the view we knew we had made a really excellent choice.
The day we arrived was the start of the week long festival of Sao Joao which was amazing and we felt blessed to have been there on the Island to witness the festivities.
As I say as we only ate out once so I cant really recommend restaurants although there are plenty around and all seem to offer menus written in English, we went to a Vegetarian restaurant for dinner in Ponta Delgada which was excellent (see Trip Advisor).
We really enjoyed our holiday on this lovely Island and will definitely go back next year and most definitely to this accommodation.
Ribeira das Taínhas is a quiet scenario, near Vila Franca do Campo, the first capital of São Miguel. In the borderline of the Atlantic Ocean, one can contemplate the waves moving, always new, and always majestic.
The three major beaches located nearby offer excellent bath zones and the ideal conditions to surf - Calhau d’Areia (500m), Vinha d’Areia (3 km) and Água d’Alto (5 km).
Unique pieces of “louça da vila” can be found in the pottery shop of Mestre João Rita, in Vila Franca do Campo. The handicraft is made of red clay, non-glazed, objects used until very recently in the day-to-day lives of the locals.
One of the most emblematic Natural Reserve is located in Vila Franca do Campo municipality: the islet.
Choose Quinta de Milhafres as your starting point and discover:
Lagoa do Congro (6,5km) is a lake of green limpid water surrounded by dense forest.
Lagoa dos Nenúfares (7km) is a lake fully covered with water lilies;
Cerrado dos Bezerros (18 km) is a park with a wide range of flowers and plants species.
Thermal Water Spring in Furnas (20km) are authentic natural spas - Fonte da Dona Beija and the pool of Terra Nostra Park.
Festivals - Vila Franca do Campo:
May (Easter Sunday) – São Miguel Feast, an homage with over 400 years of history. Its highest moment is a procession in honour of work and which presents the range of professions and social classes brought to the island during the settlement period – as brick men, carpenters, shoe men, fishers, liberal professions and many others.
24th of June – São João Feast has its highest moment in the popular parade on the main streets. The dancers with colourful costumes, about 700, march at the sound of popular music, showing creative routines built upon local traditions.
Campaign SOS Shearwater
From October 1st to November 15th, the young shearwaters (night bird that builds its nest on Vila Franca do Campo Islet) leave their nest to their first transatlantic flight. Due to the artificial lights, they lose orientation and become easily car-hit victims.
The campaign SOS Shearwater has being held since 1995 and its mail goal is to engage people in the bird rescue when they are found in the roads on nearby.
Night brigades, guided by specialists, cover the coastline of the municipality searching for young shearwater birds in danger. Everyone can join this initiative and for that one must enrol as a volunteer at the municipal services.
In the 2013 campaign, 6915 young shearwater birds were rescued.
