The wildflower Inn is a lovely vacation home located in the quaint downeast village of East Machias. Surrounded by flowers, plants and the beautiful East Machias river, the Wildflower Inn makes a perfect spot to spend your vacation. We are within easy driving of Bar Harbor, Campobello Island, Lubec, Eastport, Calais and New Brunswick Canada. Rogue Bluffs State Park is a short drive away (my favorite beach), with a salt water beach on one side of the road and fresh water on the other side. All covered in pink and white beach roses most of the summer. East Machias has a lovely recreational trail for hiking, biking, etc. but we also know of some spectacular hiking near Quoddy Head Lighthouse (Green Trail). Walk through pine forest and see crashing surf below. Bring a picnic lunch because you won't want to leave. Lobsters are fresh off the boat. We have lobster pots and Paul will cook them if you give us a days notice. Sea Glass collecting is my favorite hobby. Artists galleries, yarn shops, gift shops, or just sit on the deck or farmers porch and watch the hummingbirds. Please be sure to bring a passport if you plan to go to Canada. Canada is a short boat trip by ferry to New Brunswick (with your car). Several great restaurants are located in Machias (5 mi). The University of Maine at Machias is here too. Machias has a full supermarket (hannafords) and pharmacy/drug store (rite-aid) along with many other stores to visit. See Bad Little Falls in Machias (beautiful). We know you will love this area. It is charming and friendly. We live here from April through October and feel very fortunate to have found such beauty. We will be available to answer questions, or help with whatever you may need to make your stay a memorable one.

Marge and Paul Hartnett have vacationed in East Machias since 1970. We are both retired and decided to open the Wildflower Inn. We have met wonderful people and enjoy suggesting places of interest in the area.
Marjorie or Paul Hartnett purchased this house in 2003
Surrounded by beautiful flowers, humming birds, plants, lupines, views of the East Machias river, seals, bald eagles, etc. You will have a chance to relax and enjoy YOUR home. Sit on the deck and watch the eagles, relax on the lanai and read amid the hanging baskets and window boxes, cook to your heart's content or visit some of the many lighthouses, hiking trails, sea glass beaches, shop in quaint stores, etc., etc., etc. This house is spotlessly clean and pet free. Your privacy is important and we will not disturb you unless you ask us to. We will give directions, cook your lobster and do everything to make your stay comfortable.
Our experience. Over the past eight years we have met many people.....from this country and other countries. Our guests feel at home and many wish they could stay longer. We live next door and are available to answer questions, suggest trips, etc. if you plan to see the puffins you need an advance reservation. Capt. Andy Patterson in Cutler Maine is the closest to us and also does sightseeing, etc. Going to Campobello Island requires a passport. We are looking forward to welcoming you and making your stay a wonderful one. Marge & Paul Hartnett
From the moment I contacted Paul and Marjorie, they put my mind at ease. They followed up my request for more information with a lengthy phone call filling me in about the area, the amenities, and what I could expect. When we arrived, we found a clean, and charming home that was ready for us. Paul and Marjorie were easily available to us during our stay, and we enjoyed learning more about the home and the area. Directly across the street is a river, with a large nest of bald eagles that can be easily seen and heard. Stunning! Paul arranged through a friend to pick several fresh lobsters, and Paul steamed them for us. What a treat! We are absolutely putting this property on our list of favorites. There are very few hotels in this area, so Paul and Marjorie will be our first call when we return.
We spent four nights at the Wildflower Inn in August during a longer stay in the US. On arrival we were welcomed by Marjorie and Paul who showed us around the house. All of the rooms were immaculately decorated and very clean. There were three bedrooms, a double, twin and single bedded rooms upstairs with a bathroom with shower. Downstairs there was a large kitchen, dining room, living room and small bathroom with shower. We really enjoyed staying in the house which was full of charm and character.
We had family members staying nearby in Addison and can recommend the food at Helen's in East Machias. We can also recommend the food at the Whole Life Natural Market in East Machias and a visit to the Burnham Tavern. We were also lucky enough to see a bald eagle down by the bridge on the river. Overall we had a lovely stay at the Wildflower Inn and would be happy to visit again.
A wonderful place with GREAT HOSTS. They were helpful, and even prepared lobster dinner.
This home in East Machias is the best rental. The home is decorated beautifully and very very clean. Having Marjorie and Paul close by is a real blessing. They are gracious to help wherever and whenever they can. The week was relaxing and the weather was just glorious. We highly recommend Wildflower Inn!!!
This home near the East Machias River is one of the best rentals we have ever stayed at in the last thirty years. We hope to return in two years for another two - four week stay. It is centrally located for trips north to Canada and south to Bar Harbor. Machias has a great festival in August. Lobster is available from the lobster pounds and from fishermen; the Hartnett's even cook the lobster for you. The house is stocked with everything you need for a comfortable vacation. The landlords are gracious and helpful. The flowers are more than beautiful around the property.
This was exactly the kind of place we were dreaming about when we booked our first ever trip to Maine. We explored Lubec and Campobello, and we went of on Captain Andy's Bold Coast trip to Machias Seal Island, and all were within easy driving distance. The home was spacious and comfortable, and we could see bald eagles feeding in the Machias River as we sat on our front porch. We loved coming home to relax after a long day of exploring, and we would come back again in a heartbeat.
The Machias area is home to a great many artisans for pottery, paintings, wood carving, fiber arts, etc. Hike on the many trails nearby, fish for bass, salmon, etc., kayak in river, antique shop. The many beaches and lakes are beautiful and not crowded. Wildflowers, beach roses, lupine, daisies, and the blueberry fields make it one of the prettiest places in Maine. We have fine dining within walking distance. This will be your 'home away from home' to relax in after a day of exploring the Downeast area. We will be happy to help you plan trips, as well as recommend restaurants and things to do. We will also stock your kitchen if you let us know ahead of time, or there is plenty of shopping in Machias - 5 miles. Come and visit the quaint village of East Machias. Owners are next door and eager to answer questions, etc. We are looking forward to making your stay a memorable one!
