A Poem of Collioure
Between the steep hills of green
And the sea so blue
A town sits as if in a dream
Two castles keep it true.
A church and chapel stand out to sea
It's a town of romance and history.
Coveted by many, but now stands free
Its' cobbled streets whisper of mystery
It sits in a rose-hued light
For it is a town of colour beyond compare
Filled with all sorts of delight.
It is a hidden treasure definitely worth a stare
That's why we love to keep returning
To relax, eat and share in its' learning
Collioure has been and continues to be an inspiring town for artists. The walls of Les Templiers hotel and bar in the centre of town are full of paintings by famous artists who exchanged them for board and beer so worth going for an aperitif. The local art gallery has excellent exhibitions and is worth visiting. It sits at the bottom of a vineyard grove next to an old monastery which is now one of the finest restaurants in Collioure and there is a lovely walk up to the windmill and beyond that, for the more robust up to the fort, otherwise Le Petit Train takes a more relaxed route from the centre of the town. For modern art enthusiasts many artists open their studios in the summer and are situated in the upper old town by climbing the steps next to the imposing church. There are plenty of wine opportunities and excellent seafood!
