About Bill Gray
My wife Cathy and I currently live in Rockville Centre, NY. Although I was born and raised in New York, growing up I spent all my summers across the street from the Big House (dad was a school teacher). My family has deep roots here and to this date most of my relatives live in the area. We have been renting to Big House for many years now and have an opportunity to meet some of the guests and have found each encounter to be rewarding. It is fun to meet people who are on vacation! We hope we have a chance to meet you.
Why Bill Gray chose North Brooklin
The original cape cod part of this house was built in the early 1800's. As was typical of these salt water farms additions were added expanding the house as needed. It was built and owned by the Sherman family. It has been a farm, bed and breakfast, post office, and summer rental property since then. Off to the right (as you are facing the house) there use to be a dance hall and movie theatre (currently there is a barn/boat house). This was during the time of silent movies. Laura Sherman ran this business and played the piano for the silent pictures. Down the street 'a piece' was the Grovehurst Inn and cottages. The inn was torn down a long time ago but the cottages remain and are still owned by descendants of the Sherman family. If you look to the left when you reached the beach you will see three big rocks, there is a peer by these rocks. That was the site of a steam boat landing. It brought summer guest from New York, Boston and beyond. This area is steeped in beautiful vistas, abundant nature and never ending hospitality. It has been a treasure chest of delight for my family, both current and prior generations. We know you will find the same.
What makes this House unique
Long walks on the beach, exploring game trails in the 35 acres behind the house, trips to Deer Island and Stonington, visiting Acadia National Park, baking and cooking in the expansive kitchen or enjoying cocktails on the wrap around porch all make this house feel like home to all who sty here.

A Vacation Beyond Expectations
We had 8 adults and 7 children in our party, the house fit us perfectly. It is a beautiful home and is so well appointed, we used everything available, the hand mixer, colander, food processer, large strainer, lobster pot, grill, both ovens at the same time, the crochet set. We took a pop corn maker, an ice cream maker and a large electric grill, everything thing else one could ask for was there. The coffee pot is slow, slow but there is a Kuerig available so bring the little cups for it. We rented 3 kayaks from Blue Falls, had 2 beach days, evening walks on the beach and did lots of exploring. We really enjoyed the tour of the Boat Yard in Brooklyn recommended by Mr. Bill Grey! My family was ready to go back, we were from GA, VA, MO, and OH and we all thought Maine was the way life should be.
It felt like home & was perfect for our family celebration!
A beautiful fall setting & the kids really enjoyed our access to the beach. We appreciated Heather's help with our lobster cookout & also loved telling ghost stories around the campfire.
The house was a good location for access to Bar Harbor & other Blue Hill areas. Would certainly do this again. The Moody Clan
We expected plenty of space for our 4 families along with 7 children & we weren't disappointed!
If you love big, old, but charming & spacious farmhouses, this is it. The floor plan took a little bit to figure out bc of the 3 staircases but it was fun to discover where they led. Each of the bedrooms are tastefully decorated. The kitchen is large with ample work space, it could benefit from brighter task lighting. LED bulbs would be great. We loved the wrap around porch & ample parking. Nicely landscaped for each season & lots of outdoor space for the kids to run around but need to provide their own games/ activities, except croquet & horseshoes:) Road traffic in front of the house can be rather busy & noisy during morning & evening commutes. Heather, the property manager & Bill the owner, are both very helpful to answer any questions. Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.
We are glad you enjoyed your stay-it is a beautiful time of the year to visit Maine.
We were somewhat surprised by your comment on the kitchen lighting only because the lights on the ceiling fans are so bright that we had to install a dimmer switch which is on the switch by the bathroom. When we came in after you left, the lights were turned down very low. Maybe that was the issue? In any event, we appreciate your input and will make sure that all lights are bright and working in the future.
Brooklin is home to both the Brooklin Boatyard which builds high end yachts and the Wooden Boat School and magazine which do attract both visitors and workers. If you didn't get to visit these places this trip, hopefully you will come back, (and stay with us!), and make it part of your experience.
Thanks for "doin time" in the Big House!
large house in beautiful area
The house is very accommodating, with a well-stocked kitchen, lots of bathrooms, towels, beach chairs, comfortable beds, and plenty of charm. Large yard with fire pit and games, and beautiful beach just a short walk away.
What more could you want
This place was great for our family. We had plenty of room and the house was so comfortable. The beds were super comfortable. The kitchen is the most well equipped kitchen I have ever seen in a vacation rental. Not one thing missing. It was so nice to have a large outdoor space for our kids to run around. The beach across the street is also pretty amazing. A gorgeous location and wonderful piece of property.
Wonderful place for our family reunion!
The Big House was everything we had hoped for: very clean, well-equipped kitchen, plenty of bedrooms and updated bathrooms, huge yard with fire and horseshoe pits, glorious front porch complete with rocking chairs, closet full of games, even a trunk of dress-ups that was a big hit with the youngsters. It seems the owners thought of everything! The beach across the road was a great spot for the youngsters, also, with many hours spent searching for "treasures" and wading in the water. Bill was a great host; stopping by to share with us some history of the area and places we might want to explore. I can confidently recommend this place!
