This 1800's beautifully renovated farmhouse features 8 bedrooms, 6 1/2 bathrooms and a gourmet country kitchen with a 5 burner gas stove, in-island electric oven, 2 refrigerators, ice maker, wine cooler and more. In addition the house is equipped with Wi-Fi, cable television, washer dryer and VCR and DVD library. Sitting on 35 acres overlooking Blue Hill Bay, it is just a short walk to a private beach for sunning, beach combing, swimming, kayaking and boating (mooring available). The house is completely updated and charmingly furnished and is ideal for multi-family vacations. Located just 15 miles from historic Blue Hill and 40 miles from Acadia National Park.
My wife Cathy and I currently live in Rockville Centre, NY. Although I was born and raised in New York, growing up I spent all my summers across the street from the Big House (dad was a school teacher). My family has deep roots here and to this date most of my relatives live in the area.
We have been renting to Big House for many years now and have an opportunity to meet some of the guests and have found each encounter to be rewarding. It is fun to meet people who are on vacation! We hope we have a chance to meet you.
The original cape cod part of this house was built in the early 1800's. As was typical of these salt water farms additions were added expanding the house as needed. It was built and owned by the Sherman family. It has been a farm, bed and breakfast, post office, and summer rental property since then. Off to the right (as you are facing the house) there use to be a dance hall and movie theatre (currently there is a barn/boat house). This was during the time of silent movies. Laura Sherman ran this business and played the piano for the silent pictures. Down the street 'a piece' was the Grovehurst Inn and cottages. The inn was torn down a long time ago but the cottages remain and are still owned by descendants of the Sherman family. If you look to the left when you reached the beach you will see three big rocks, there is a peer by these rocks. That was the site of a steam boat landing. It brought summer guest from New York, Boston and beyond.
This area is steeped in beautiful vistas, abundant nature and never ending hospitality. It has been a treasure chest of delight for my family, both current and prior generations. We know you will find the same.
Long walks on the beach, exploring game trails in the 35 acres behind the house, trips to Deer Island and Stonington, visiting Acadia National Park, baking and cooking in the expansive kitchen or enjoying cocktails on the wrap around porch all make this house feel like home to all who sty here.
We had a blast. We had 7 couples split between the 8 bedrooms. Large back yard for grilling horse shoes and activities. One day we did a large lobster cookout. No complaints at all as the owners very more than accommodating.
The Big House was great place for a large group of people to stay and enjoy coastal Maine. It is beautifully furnished, comfortable and clean. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you wound need and more. There are great spaces inside and outside for people to gather . Everything worked, no problems with plumbing, electricity or wifi. The beach access is an easy walk across the street. We had a wonderful time there in August and would love to stay there again.
There are lots of great restaurants and things to do and explore in the area. The owners provide a binder full of information on the area including restaurants , shopping and activities.
I would highly recommend The Big House to family and friends
The Big House had lots of bedrooms and bathrooms with great showers. The internet service was terrific. We noted many people using the service simultaneously.
We found lots to do in the area. There were plenty of good restaurants and sightseeing areas.
The kitchen was large and well laid out. There were two refrigerators and an ice making machine!
The yard was large enough for a full size croquet area.
The property manager was also great. She delivered lobsters purchased right off the dock at boat prices!
JC and Carleen Carlson + 8 other happy guests.
If I had any feedback or advice to the owners of the Big House, it would be this: POST more pictures!! The ones here do not do this amazing home and property justice. Here are just a few things that you don't see, but made this place one of the best we (3 families, 13 people, from pre-teens, to college students, to those of us pushing the big 5-0.) have ever rented. The Yard: HUGE, well maintained, with a lovely fire pit for roasting marshmallows and telling tales. Lots of space to run and play. The VIEWS: Oh my! From the top of the hill to the beach below. So so lovely. The BEACH: Your own little paradise! We had it to ourselves all but one day. There is plenty of shade and a picnic table under a quirky old tree. And the sea glass! Oh, we were in heaven! Best beach combing, tide pool exploring ever. Even after a long day at Acadia, we couldn't resist taking a sunset stroll down to the beach to explore a little more. LOTS of little nooks and crannies and EXTRAS: This house is BIG, but it feels like a home. Clean and well maintained with unique features that only older homes have with built ins and odd shaped rooms.
One final thought: The caretaker, Heather, is an absolute angel. She went above and beyond to make our stay an amazing experience we will never forget.
It is not often that you get more than you expected. The Big House is the exception to the rule.
15 people 3 families decided to stay at the big house. Not sure if it was what we wanted but we went for it!!! It was absolutely beautiful the property the scenery and the owner of the property was top notch. Would I stay there again yes I would in a minute. Access to the beach was great , drive to acadia national park was not bad. Nice drive through towns traffic was not bad at all. Great place to rent!!!
