About Mary and Ray Spangler

Ray and I are retired teachers and have owned the property since the summer of 92. There are two previous owners. The first built a 3 bedroom 1 bath in the early 60s; the second added a den and bedroom and bath as well as a deck and screened in sun room in the 80s We started renting in 93 and did an addition to the property in 2003 adding a glassed in sunroom and a 1/2 bath downstairs and an upper story with full bath, large bedroom with 2 beds and mini kitchen: fridge, sink and microwave.

Mary and Ray Spangler purchased this house in 1992

Why Mary and Ray Spangler chose Sturgeon Bay

I walked down the main hallway and saw the beach and fell in love.

What makes this house unique

The house has 120 ft of sand beach, is quiet and only 6 miles from Sturgeon Bay with its shopping and fine restaurants. Pottowatomee and White Fish Dunes State Parks are nearby and very worth a visit as well as are the other towns and parks on the peninsula about 20 minutes North.

Amazing view & plenty of space

  • 4 of 5

Great spot for a relaxed week, that is flexible and able to accommodate a big group (14 for us). We had a great time exploring Door County during the day, and returning for an afternoon at the beach. At night everyone piled onto the benches around the table in the great room for dinner and games while looking out at the lake. Having bikes, beach chairs & toys made it possible for all to be a little more independent. Which meant I could escape for some awesome beach walks. The house and furnishings are a bit rustic, but very functional. Nice to see a place that's well loved & grateful to Mary and Roy for sharing it. Our kids are already asking about return trips.

Gorgeous View and Great walks!!

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying at Mary's Beach House! We even got to bring our Australian Shepherd. It was wonderful, waking up to Lake Michigan and it's many moods. Some days were stormy, and we watched the waves crash to the shore. Others were calm and we watched the birds looking for meals. This was our first time to Door County, and I never knew how beautiful Lake Michigan is until now. The location is great...close to downtown Sturgeon Bay, but also a good location for exploring the rest of the county. We even found a Nature Preserve, Shimmering Sands, down the road on our last day. Thanks for a great time Mary!!

Very nice with everything we needed!

  • 5 of 5

This property was absolutely fantastic. Sleeping accommodations were perfect. We even pulled the bicycles out of the shed for an added bonus. Beautiful deck out front to enjoy a cup of coffee and enjoy the sound of the waves hitting the beach. We're looking forward to making this an annual trip.

Has potential to be great space

  • 3 of 5

Great location and beautiful sand beach. Ample space and bedrooms. If the furnishings and amenities were updated, this would be an awesome vacation location. As is, the mattresses and bedding need updating as well as kitchen utensils. Hard to cook for a large group with minimal pans and pots. No screens were in windows upon arrival, we had to locate and install. Lots of knick knacks and extra furniture around which made space cluttered and cramped.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your suggestions. We apologize for forgetting to put the screens in this year for the first time since 1992! We are changing the configuration of the house based on these recommendations.

Wonderful Family Vacation Memory Maker

  • 5 of 5

The home and property is everything described and more. It sits on a high dune overlooking beautiful Lilly Bay. Although the Lake Michigan level was higher than normal this year, there was ample sand beach sprinkled with stones for skipping and collecting. The beach is very walkable for miles in either direction.

The home is large with a deck spanning the entire front facing the shore. The home is well-equipped, clean and maintained. There was a huge supply of DVDs for all ages that were helpful with the kids at certain times, such as meal preparation. There were beach toys and bikes for riding along scenic Glidden Drive. The view for the loft upstairs and the small private deck was equally breathtaking.

The house is about 5-10 minutes from Sturgeon Bay, grocery stores and all other conveniences. There are also ample recreational and tourist sites for all ages in Door County if there is a day when the weather on the beach is not the greatest. We went to 'The Farm" about 10 minutes away, which was a spacious, well- maintained petting zoo, perfect for kids of all ages and for their parents to let the kids roam within view. One day, when the waves were high, we drove up to Cave Point County Park, about 15-20 minutes up the coast to watch the huge waves crash against the rocky cliffs. It was awesome!

We have already reserved a week for 2016. It was a unanimous vote by our children. I would highly recommend this location to family and friends. We have also been very pleased with the communication and service provided by the owners. We arrived at the 2:00 PM check-in time and the owner gave a tour of the whole property before we started unloading.
