About Diane or Donald Heilman

Donald and Diane have been coming to The Outer Banks since 1984 and owned here since 1987. They have watched their children and their friends discover the OBX and continue to return every year. Diane is a teacher and Donald an attorney, and they and their children have SCUBA dived, fished, boated, hang glided, golfed, dined in and out, surfed, biked, jogged, raced, swam, sun bathe, shopped, hiked, and gone to live theater over the years. Hope you enjoy it as much as they do.

Why Diane or Donald Heilman chose Nags Head

This area of Nags Head is just a little off the beaten path, but still a short walk or bike ride to our favorite places. The beaches are clean and spacious. The ocean is beautiful. The house is just across the street from the beach and has a private beach access over the dunes. The Nags Head Bike Path is right across the street and runs for a total of 14 miles. It is the perfect location from which to explore the Outer Banks.

What makes this cottage unique

From the Ocean Cactus, you can ride your bike north 1.5 miles to Cahoons General Store for whatever you need, or walk .3 miles to Fishheads at the Outer Banks Pier for 15 cent shrimp and nightly specials from the bar. The screened porch and great room give people separate places to gather. Coffee on the sun porch is a great way to start the morning.

Comfortable stay for a beach getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this home with another couple and their child. We were lucky to stay in the room that also had a screened in front porch. It was nice to sit on the main porch to relax and stay out of the sun. The internet and cable were out upon arrival due to a previous storm, but the owners had someone come out as soon as the cable provider was available to take care of this, which was about one day. The owners were kind and understanding and took care of business! Parking was spacious with a place to park our car out of the sun. It was an easy walk to the beach, even with a one year old child. It was also a nice walk along the beach to get to the south pier to eat and drink. Eating, shopping, and sight-seeing were all within a ten minute drive, with the luxury of the house being in the less-populated South Nags Head. Overall, we and our friends were happy with our stay and would come back in the future!

The house was in a great place and met some really nice neighbors. I would go back again. The only drawback was the coffee maker didn't work

Everyone had a great time at this house. Clean, simple, easy to access beach.

  • 4 of 5

We had three adults, and four kids in the house and we fit perfect. Nothing fancy, but clean, close to beach and FishHeads Bar & Grill on the pier (.4 miles south). Kitchen pan selection could be better and no grill(?)....but we made do. We would stay here again for sure. Thanks.

Just what we needed!

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Ocean Cactus. The house was clean and in very good condition. The screened porch and reading room were nice additions. The location is very convenient and yet not in a high traffic area. The owners were also very nice to work with. I highly recommend.

Nags Head Vacation

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time!! House was as described, clean, & easy access to everything. I wish we could have seen the beach better from the deck. The power went out one day because of a storm. Everyone else got power back but us. I called the owners, they were wonderful. They called the power co & stayed up until after midnight to make sure they came & we had power. I had never been to Nags Head that is why we went this year. We did a lot of sightseeing and enjoyed the ride to Hatteras & the Ferry ride to Ocracoke. We saw all of the Lighthouses in the area. It is not my favorite place so we probably will not go again. It has nothing to do with the house. I am just a Myrtle Beach kinda person.
