About the property

3 Bedroom House In The Beautiful Morvan Regional Park

An 1850s, south facing, stone built farmhouse now converted into a very comfortable modern home from home. At the front is a large oak-framed porch with log store, Stone steps to front door.

With the exception of the front door the house is double-glazed throughout and insulated.

There are three large double bedrooms;

Bedroom 1) First floor, 1 x king size bed and en suite with bath and power point and electric radiator. Wardrobe,chests of drawers, electric radiator, electric fan, bedside lights, clock radio, settee.

Bedroom 2) First floor,1 x double bed and 1 x single bed,chest of drawers, bedside lights, clock radio, wardrobe, chest of drawers, electric fan, electric radiator. South facing roof windows with views

Bedroom 3) situated on the ground floor. 2 x single beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside lights, electric radiator, electric fan, clock radio. South facing window with views.

All 3 bedrooms have good quality beds and bedlinen.

Also on the ground floor is the spacious family bathroom with bath, shower and basin, large free-standing shelf unit, electric radiator, power point. Downstairs WC is separate.

Straight from the front door is very large living room, over 20 feet square, with feature log burner, in a massive inglenook, and exposed oak beams. Kept now as 3 distinct areas this was formerly the family room. We now have the kitchen, lounge and dining table here.

The lounge area, with its leather suite centred around the fireplace, also has a small, well stocked bookcase for guests to use. The mini hi-fi with mp3 jack is to be found here too. As the internet service is so poor, as is French TV, we are not able to offer either currently. A laptop and DVDs are our preference.

As former caterers we have a well equipped kitchen with 5 burner gas hob,extractor hood, two electric fan ovens, microwave oven, dish washer, toaster, blender, espresso machine and tall fridge. All the equipment is complemented by plenty of good quality crockery, cutlery, serving dishes, glasses and mugs. A terrific array of pots, pans and utensils is available. We have made a point of having enough crockery and cutlery so there is no need to use the dishwasher twice a day.

Each area has separate lighting so can be adjusted to suit.

A few steps from the house, in a small outbuilding, is the Laundry Room with freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, iron, ironing board and sink.

Outside there is a large terrace overlooking the valley, complete with hardwood table, chairs with cushions and a parasol Also available are sun loungers and barbecue. New for this year will be a lower terrace with table and chairs, ideal for a coffee break next to the small stream running through the garden. There is also ample off-road parking, as the house adjoining is also ours, although not habitable. There is a large expanse of outside area to use and relax in. There is a second terrace here and a small garden for your use.

We have endeavored to equip the house with good quality throughout. Initially used as a holiday home when our family was young we now feel it the right time to share this wonderful place.

Although historically there is an unmade public road right outside the front door in practice it is seldom used, except by neighbours.

The proper public road is now the other side of our terrace, having been rerouted when the road was made-up many years ago. Even that cannot be called busy, offering a tranquility not available to many in the UK today.

We feel obliged, in the interests of fairness and safety to say the property is NOT suitable for young children. Babies that are not yet crawling would be fine and children who can be left to play largely unsupervised would probably be OK. Our main concern here is that there is an 8 foot drop from the terrace to the road beyond. There is a post-and-rail fence but it is far from toddler-proof. We have on-going plans for property improvements and the terrace is amongst them.

There is direct access into the forest opposite the end of our drive, down the hill or by an almost as quick short walk up behind the house.

About Chris and Jill Wood

Jill is a Kent girl and loves her hills. The flat Essex countryside where Chris was born and brought-up, and we now live, is not to her taste. However it has been convenient for her commute to London.

Chris originally trained and worked as a chef and we met when he was head Chef in London and Jill came in as a student. We have been married for 30 years and have 2 grown-up sons.

Why Chris and Jill Wood chose Glux-en-Glenne

For us, this house is a place to relax and unwind, in total contrast to our life in busy Southern England.

Our sons have had a wonderful time on their bikes (and later quadbikes) exploring the area, making dens and damming streams, with a level of freedom and safety that is just no longer available in the UK.

We had visited France many times over the years and had repeatedly returned to this area as it's natural beauty appealed to us.

When we first saw the house, it felt 'right' to us, and we have thoroughly enjoyed every visit there. Going back to England seems to get harder each time.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Grange Pre is nestled in a small hillside hamlet, facing due south with spectacular views.

We are protected from the coldest North winds in winter and can take full advantage of the sun. In winter, with the altitude of 660m the sun remains quite strong. We once had lunch outside 2 days before Christmas. On several other occasions we have had 12 inches of snow at Christmas. As we are so high we regularly have the dramatic situation of being in full sun and looking down onto the clouds.

Summer temperatures regularly reach 30 deg C. and eating outdoors in that setting is such a pleasure.

Spring is just beautiful with all the new leaves coming on, carpets of anemones in the woods, interspersed with orchids and cowslips.

In autumn the colours change into spectacular russets, golds, reds and browns as the mainly oak and beech forest starts its descent into winter dormancy. This is the time for fungi too. Any pharmacy will identify what you pick and tell you if they are safe to eat.

Most notably on days when there is a mixture of sunshine and clouds the view from the house seems to change each time you look. A relatively drab green field suddenly becomes the brightest of emeralds. It almost makes washing-up in the sink at the kitchen window a pleasure- almost.

Over our time we have been able to use the house in every calender month. Each month is different, each having its own charms.

A wondeful week in Glux

I Spent a week with my wife and friends in Glux, walking around during the day and having rest during evenings and nights at Chris and Gil's gite.

The gite was well equiped and clean, suitable for up to 7 people in 3 rooms.

The gite is very well located for calm and rest as well as for wild walks.

I would definitly recommend it for those who love to be quiet

Nice Belgian and Dutch neighbours around

A Lovely and Well Equipped Property

This was the second year that we have stayed at the property. It is very well equipped and the accommodation is of a high standard. It is situated in a beautiful area that offers good walking, interesting historic towns and sites and a relaxing and peaceful holiday. Thoroughly recommended.

Lovely peaceful holiday

This was a lovely property to stay in. We stayed for 10 days and we were never at a loss for things to do. Situated in the Parc du Morvan, there are some wonderful walks to take through the mountains and forests. The local town, Autun, used to be a Roman settlement and there is a variety of tourist attractions around this. The Bibracte museum and archeological site about 15 mins from the house is worth a look.

There is also a great mountain lake available for swimming in, surrounded by forest on all sides, about 20mins from the house, which we found ourselves going to a lot!

We stayed in August and the weather was perfect - 30 degrees most days and we could sit out every evening and have a BBQ, with the provided table and chairs and BBQ.

The house itself is very homely with all the kitchen appliances and cooking utensils you need. Ample cutlery, glasses etc and serving bowls. There were no issues with anything broken etc, and everything was finished to a high standard. If anything, the pictures don't do it justice!

I'd really recommend this property if you are looking for peace & quiet or enjoy the wildlife. I would definitely consider going back.

La maison est impeccable, très bien équipée, et soignée ! Les chambres sont spacieuses et très bien agencées. On se sent bienvenus et je ne peux que vous conseiller d'aller à la petite auberge, leur restaurant (quels desserts !).

Chris et Jill sont des hôtes adorables que je reverrai avec grand plaisir !

Très beau séjour à Glux

La maison est très bien équipée pour un séjour prolongé en famille... chambres et lit comfortables, magnifique vue, promenade en forêt possible à qqs mètres de la maison... à 10 min de Bibracte et du Mont Beuvray (magnifique forêt, musée et site très interessants).

Et, pour ne rien gâcher, les propriétaires sont très très sympa !

Located in the beautiful Morvan Regional Park, our house is located in a small hamlet, in a lovely position, with a beautiful view.

The setting is very quiet and peaceful, with just the sounds of the birds to disturb you. The Haut Folin rises to over 1000m behind us, protecting from north winds, with the tree covered Mont Beuvray to the south and east. Both offer excellent walking and nature-spotting opportunities right on the doorstep.

For those with an interest in wildlife, there is excellent selection of birds in the area, including 2 types of Shrike, both Black and Common Redstarts, Red Kites, Black Kites, various Woodpeckers, Willow Tits and Osprey. We have seen nearly 30 species, mainly around the house, the immediate fields and forest.

Close to the house we have seen Red Squirrels, Deer, Pine Martens, Hedgehogs, Bats and Common Lizards. Coypu are an unwanted invader on the waterways and can be seen periodically.

There is a wide range of wild flowers and fungi and also a good selection of butterflies and insects, including the delightful Hummingbird Hawk Moth.

It is possible to hike or cycle in the Regional Park straight from the house. The source of the River Yonne is within 15 minutes walk from the house. Joining the Seine some miles north it flows through the reservoir at Lac de Pannaciere and helps to feed Paris with its supply of fresh water. The river was also used formerly to transport logs felled from the extensive local forests to sawmills around Paris. You will see brown tourist signs referring to 'Les Flotteurs'. These were men who floated the logs to Paris, a round trip of 3 months.

There is an equestrian centre in the hamlet for hacks straight into the forest.

Within 5 Km, there is the small village of Glux-en-Glenne, with a bar and restaurant.

Glux holds an annual fete (Fete des Myrtilles) in August which includes delicious local-made tarts.These are a specialty made from the blueberries which grow wild and in abundance in the area.

There is also the large Romano/Celtic excavation and museum at Bribracte, which, although 5km by road, is visible from our house on the top of Mont Beuvray.

The village of St Leger (9 km) is great for local facilities. It has two small supermarkets, butcher, baker, chemist, petrol station, bars and restaurants.

The village holds is a lovely autumn festival (Fete des Marrons) in October.

The spectacular town of Autun is within 25 km, where there are excellent Roman remains including an amphitheater. Extensive sections of the Roman wall are easily accessible and there are the large remains from 2 of the town gates.

Autun also has a very good selection of shops, supermarkets, weekly markets, bars and restaurants.

There is also a golf course, horse riding, bowling, theatres, cinemas,swimming pool and hospital. It also boasts a magnificent cathedral.

Our preferred town for shopping is Autun but as an alternative there is Chateau Chinon. An attractive but smaller town it has plenty of shops and other facilities. When approached from the direction of Nevers it sits perched on top of a large hill with the spectacular backdrop of the green-clad mountains behind. It is also the administrative capital of our 'departement' of Nievre.

The late President of France, Mitterand, was Mayor here as one of his first steps in politics and kept a close association until his death.

The famous Burgundy wine areas are within an easy driving distance, (Beaune, Chalons (Cote d'Or) 1 hour approx).

For those who like water sports the Lac des Settons and reservoir of Lac de Panneciere are both about an hour's drive of the house. Both have easy public access with small beaches, picnic tables and so on.

About an hour and a half north from us, and half an hour on from Lac des Settons, is St Brisson, the site of the Parc du Morvan office. Set in well tended parkland with a lake and easy walking routes around the area it is a delightful place and, with a tourist information office on site, any further information you require can be found here. Many of the their pamphlets are in English.

On the way to St Brisson is the village of Gouloux. There is a working clog maker there, with a shop and exhibition room. On the road just before reaching Gouloux there is a waterfall. A short walk from a car park it is well worth a stop. Clogs were the local footwear of choice well into the 20th century. Indeed one of the houses in our hamlet belongs to the local clog maker who retired a few years ago. He no longer lives there but still maintains the house and has an extensive vegetable garden.

Another little known aspect of our area is that it had a strong resistance movement in WW2. The Maquis were secreted in the forests and farms of the region, making life as difficult as possible for the Nazis. Small memorials can be seen at the roadsides as you tour around.

Etang sur Arroux, to our south, has canoeing from the campsite and an outdoor lido.
