Great Family Summer Vacation in Canaan Valley or Cozy Romantic Getaway in West Virginia. Excellent spot to explore various day-hikes and mountain bike.
Nearby Davis West Virginia was voted by Men's Health as one of the coolest little mountain towns in the country. Note that the high elevation of this Valley means the climate is more like Maine or Southern Canada/summer days do not get beyond 80s at their hottest and evenings dip down to 50s or low 60s, even in July and August.

Colleen purchased this House in 2005
Why Colleen chose Davis
I first discovered Canaan Valley when I went X-country skiing here as a very young adult in 1989. At the time, the only other place I had X country skied was in a thick European forest out of a Brother Grimm's fairytale.. I was excited to find that Blackwater Falls State Park, when covered in snow, evoked the same feeling. I was also excited to discover that Canaan Valley has the most natural snow fall of anywhere that is a weekend trip from from the Washington DC area. I went back every winter after that and dreamed of some day having my own place there. Fast forward to 2005 when the dream became a reality. When we bought Skier's View the home was in bad condition, but we could see the potential and went about doing a thoughtful renovation and redecoration. We put lots of loving hours into the home to make it the special place it is. We are happy to share the beautify, joy and tranquility of this piece of "almost heaven" with our guests. Since purchasing this home, I have had an angler-hiking--kayaking-skiing-mountain-bike-loving child who loves this place so much that he begs to move here as our permanent home.
What makes this House unique
Fabulous views, central location to Valley fun. I get my best sleep in this home, thanks to the dark night skies, peace and quiet and fresh, cool mountain air. Plus, the outdoor activities probably help! In addition to the great outdoor experiences in the area, note that the towns of Davis and Thomas have a lot to offer for towns of their size, in the way of arts and food and seasonal events. (The fourth of July fireworks and parade are really special.) There are a number of artists studios, as well as the acclaimed Purple Fiddle café/music venue in Thomas. Since we bought the home this little piece of West Virginia has been growing and thriving in a very positive way -- more local shops., two local/organic groceries (Highland Market in Davis and Front Street grocers in Thomas), quaint Tip Top café in Thomas with Friday grass-fed beef burger night, and a very special "locals" bar at the Billy Motel. We are proud to be a teeny tiny part of the invigoration of this area.

The property was absolutely beautiful!
I would recommend this cabin to anyone on VRBO. My fiance and I had a great time celebrating her 30th birthday with friends and family!
Thank you Matthew. It is nice to know our place is a home base for special family occasions.
Weather = bad, Home = good!
Because the weather was cold and snowy, we were pretty much cooped up in the house for our entire stay and could not make much use of the deck. The home is smallish, so having 7 adults (including a disabled individual) kept inside the whole time put a damper on what would otherwise have been a wonderful long weekend. The home is nicely appointed but lacks a few things we would have enjoyed having. Ceiling fans in the bedrooms (which are almost totally taken up by the beds) would have been nice. There was only one extra roll of toilet paper. The kitchen is small and lacks work space for those who want to cook, though we managed okay. There is a TV in the great room, but it is rather small as well - a larger screen would have been nice. These are observations, not complaints. Overall, the home is quite nice and we enjoyed our stay despite the weather. Colleen, the owner, was responsive and easy to deal with.
Nice place with lots of room
Nice views! Didn't lack for anything. Wasn't as much to do with the time of year and the weather but we enjoyed the place and the hot tub.
Thanks for this nice review. This time of year, the most popular/seasonal thing to do is go kayaking/rafting in the area while the water is at its highest, as well as bird watching and ramp (wild onion) hunting and attending the local ramp festivals that focus on food made with this wild ingredient. Note that things to do any time of the year include: hiking, mountain biking, scenic lift chair rides, horse back riding, viewing Blackwater Falls and Lindy Point, activities at Canaan Valley state park, including indoor pool (and seasonally, heated outdoor pool), sauna and hot tub, visits to art galleries, antiquing and gift shopping in Davis and Thomas, "gem stone mining" for little kids, small petting Zoo, live music at The Purple Fiddle, shopping/viewing for high end WV artisan made items at Baxton Gallery in Thomas, special "Friday Burger Night" at Tip Top Café (and a visit there for excellent coffee, tea, pastry and chocolate items any time they are open), Anglers should check out seasonal fishing opportunities. These are all things within 15-20 minutes of the home. If you venture 30 minutes there is Seneca Rocks and Seneca Caverns (great rainy day activity), 45 minutes you also have things in Deep Creek Lake, MD and Elkins, WV. Also within this drive time/out of Elkins and other areas are numerous scenic railroad train rides, some that feature viewing of historic sites and/or bald eagles. For astronomers, bring your telescopes, as Canaan Valley has perhaps the darkest night sky in the Mid-Atlantic area!
IT WAS WONDERFUL
IT WAS WONDERFUL AN RELAXING,EVERYTHING THEY SAID WAS TRUE,AN THE VIEW WAS AWSOME,LOOKING TO STAY A WEEK NEXT YEAR
Comfortable cottage, surprisingly spacious and beautiful views.
We loved this place and plan to return in warmer months to take full advantage of all the great hikes and climbs nearby. Thomas and Davis both have their charms, too. Only hiccup at the beginning of our stay was with the well water running out as a result of filling the hot tub twice. But homeowner was very responsive, and the issue was quickly resolved. The hot tub was heavenly.
Great Cabin for Families
We really enjoyed our stay in this cabin. The views of the trees, fields and ski resorts were beautiful. In the morning we saw deer in the fields. In the evenings the lights from the ski resorts sparkled. We had 4 adults and 4 children in our party and the house was a just right size. The home was comfortable and the kitchen was easy to work in.
Canaan Valley is a unique ecosystem. It's like a piece of Vermont was plunked down into West Virginia. Excellent hiking and leaf peeping. It's the highest elevation valley of its size, east of Denver. There are a great variety of birds all-year round in the Valley, and a great variety of unique flora and fauna. The Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge is habitat to over 150 bird species, a major flyover in Spring and Fall. The night sky has little light pollution. Popular attractions include Blackwater Falls State Park, the historic towns of Davis and Thomas featuring Mountainmade with its fine arts & crafts , the Purple Fiddle with its unique American roots-new grass -country music scene. Also nearby: Dolly Sods, Monaghahela National Forest, Cathedral State Park (old growth forest), Spruce Knob, and world-class rock climbing at Seneca Rocks. Other Activities: canoeing, kayaking, live-music listening, snow sports in winter Golf: Canaan State Park, five minutes away, has a wonderful course. There is always lots of wildlife nearby, including deer near the green. Ski: Downhill skiing only 5 minutes away at Timberline and Canaan Valley Resort. Canaan Valley Resort also has fun tubing for the kiddies. White Grass, with its great cafe and friendly Chipper (you have to ask), as well as Blackwater Falls, for Nordic skiing, are about 10 minutes away.
