Fabulous Stone Cottage - Spacious Private Quiet - a real taste of today's rural France

  • 5 of 5

Le Laurier is a fabulous 18th Century stone cottage (gite) with privacy and quiet despite being in a row of houses on a side street in the (also quiet and safe-feeling) village of Corconne. One cafe-restaurant (where croissants can be bought in the morning) and mostly residential with a few small businesses, and two chiming clocks.

Inside is more spacious than photos on the web suggest, as is the courtyard, which though close to other houses feels private - we barely saw another soul in the week we were there. While Le Laurier sleeps 6, we were there as a couple. The friendly unfussy space, which is given warmth by gorgeous old wood and cool from the stone floors and walls (while it was pretty hot outside), made for a great sanctuary.

The local phone signal in the village isn't too good and messages can take a while to get through, so email with owners Cécile and Hervé is the best way of communicating. The wireless internet connection worked well.

Don't be put off by the cash deposit, which we discovered is common practice in France as are separate charges for linen, cleaning and tourist tax. All were well worth paying for and the cost of the stay for two of us, giving us enough space to feel 'at home', was very fair.

Corconne, the village, is set against a dramatic rocky backdrop in a beautiful area with vineyards below and forest and hairpin bends in nearby hills.

We walked in the hills, had lunch/supper in nearby town/s and drove to the sand dunes of the Petite Carmargue called L'Espignotte for a dip in the Med. Afterwards, a wander round the ancient walled town of Aigues-Mortes (between the two places, it was well worth the hour's drive to the coast).

Local major town Sommieres has good shopping for all the basics and a good relaxed café atmosphere.

Pretty easy route from Montpelier airport too (an hour), though mobile phone Sat Nav was most helpful with all the roundabouts.

All round perfect venue for stepping out of English life for a wee while, to experience real everyday rural France and to remember why we love it.

A perfect house in a perfect town

  • 5 of 5

I wish there were more than five stars available- I would give this house 10! We stayed here with our two young children and we all loved the house very much. The moment we walked in we knew it would be very special. Cecile was so welcoming and friendly and the house was exactly as pictured- even better if possible! The old stone walls and many original features make you feel like you are really living in a piece of history. The house has a unique layout with mezzanine bedrooms above each bedroom. Our kids loved playing up under the skylights with the many toys and games that were provided. The beds were comfortable and it was very quiet at night. We were able to use the patio and garden to have an afternoon snack in the sunshine. The kitchen was the best we have seen in the many houses we have rented in France. It is equipped with every possible dish, utensil, and appliance that you could possibly need. The whole house is extremely tastefully decorated with many small details making it very homey and comfortable. Corconne itself is also very charming. The cliffs above the town make for a great hike up to see a castle and the "pont du hasard"- a unique rock bridge. We went on many day trips in the surrounding area. To the Bambouseraie, the Grotte de Trabuc, Sauve, and on some wonderful hikes in the countryside. To top it off, Corconne's wine co-op has fantastic wine at very affordable prices. I would not hesitate to recommend this town and this house to anyone traveling with children- it's magical!

Wunderschöne Zeit

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5
