Welcome to Compass Rose, a classic waterfront 3 BR, 1 1/2 BA cottage in lighthouse-studded Boothbay Harbor! The cottage is perched just 17' from the ocean's edge, an ideal vantage point for taking in panoramic views of the shining expanse of sea, hidden cove, lobster boats, sea birds and islands. Private amenities include a dock and deep water float, rocky shoreline, and even a 30' wide sandy entry swimming area from mid to high tide. The cottage is ideally located on a residential lane, yet walking or biking distance to the heart of the harbor with its wide collection of shops and restaurants. Lovingly maintained by a family of artists and writers since it was built in the 1920's, the cottage still charms with its over sized porch, brick fireplace, exposed beams, and vintage woodwork. Compass Rose truly captures the relaxing and unforgettable ambiance of authentic coastal Maine.
Compass Rose enjoys an ideal location, : about a mile to the heart of town, yet set on the side of a quiet point which is flanked by a beautiful waterfall, Appalachee Lake Preserve, and panoramic bay, cove, and island views. Enjoy recreational privileges at neighboring Linekin Bay Resort (heated pool, tennis, sailing) for a fee or their restaurant and bar which is open to the public. Lobster Cove and Barrett Park with picnic and outdoor concert facilities are just 1/2 mile walk/bike. Take your morning coffee down to the rocky shore to watch spectacular sunrises and to observe the activity of the graceful sailing vessels, lobster boats and sea birds including osprey and eider ducks. Row around the cove, fish for mackerel and striped bass off the dock, or Kayak to nearby islands. Enjoy ocean breezes and abundant sunshine from the cottage's over sized porch or private dock and float. All ages will enjoy searching for shells and tubing in the cottage's small, protected, sandy entry swimming area.
Rediscover simple joys.: Gather the family around the wood-burning fireplace, enjoy quality time around one of our old fashioned board games or puzzles. There are two cable TVs and DVD players and a stereo/CD/tape player along with popular books, magazines and DVDs of local interest, including a collection of Maine children's classics. Dine inside, or with ocean breezes on the outdoor covered dining alcove or sun porch (all with panoramic ocean views.) Enjoy personal touches, such as a guide to the area (with restaurant reviews), fishing poles, binoculars, floats, crab traps, yard games, free paperbacks, and the cottage album with photos and history dating back to the 1920's, and even a book of our favorite Maine recipes (including lobster stew, blueberry muffins and clam chowder, of course!)
A private family retreat for over 80 years, : Compass Rose Cottage has only recently been made available for rental. Virtually all of the cottage's original charms are intact: beamed ceilings, board and batten walls, bead board cabinetry, vintage light fixtures, wavy glass window panes and wood floors. The owners appreciate Compass Rose's rustic vintage charm, complimenting antique furnishings with comfortable 'coastal cottage' additions and high quality linens. The master bedroom has a dreamy quality, with new queen mattress, coordinating linens in pale blues, sage greens and whites, and a metal headboard, all to enhance the serene, panoramic ocean view. The kitchen, equipped by generations of loving moms, has modern appliances and is well stocked with everything you'd expect in a home, including coffee pot, blender, crock pot, baking dishes, griddle, microwave, BBQ tools, serving platters, bar glassware, cooler, ice bucket, lobster pot and crackers.
The very first trip I took as a newborn was a day trip from Portland with my sister and parents to Boothbay Harbor. Since then, this area has been an annual destination for my family.
Laurie or Joe McCammon purchased this cottage in 2006
We found this property entirely by serendipity. We were exploring the scenic back roads around BBH and got out of the car at Linekin Bay Resort to take a walk, The cottage owner, Rosemary (for which we named the cottage) was in front of her cottage and we struck up a conversation. Her parents built the cottage by hand in the 1920's. We are still close friends.
We were simply captivated by the view - cove, bay, islands, sailboats, birds. It is hard to explain but the feeling inside the cottage is incredibly special, as if you can feel the decades of family joy and love the Corkums have experienced in it To us, it is worlds away, a return to an earlier simpler time when the real things mattered and things are quiet enough to really experience nature at its most glorious.
We love old cottage architecture and feel - there is nothing better and Compass Rose has it ten-fold. The view from the porch was wonderful, especially watching the lobster boats work their traps in the morning. It was cooler than we anticipated, so we were glad for the fireplace and warm quilts!! Loved the layout, proximity to town, dock and upstairs bedroom with hinged windows. Was the perfect rental for our days in Boothbay. Thanks so much!!
This is your traditional Maine cottage on the rocky coast of Maine. Cute and cozy and well appointed. It's located in a quiet little cove that overlooks cabbage island. We saw puffins on some rocks approximately 100 yards away and small lobster boats working their traps. There are plenty of toys to borrow. There is a small monitor heater that does a nice job taking the chill off and a fireplace in the living room. There's plenty of nice, quiet roads to walk around the neighborhood also.
The cottage was very cute and charming. It had that beach cottage look that I was looking for. It was also well supplied with almost anything we needed concerning dishes and linens. The view was fantastic, especially when the sun was coming up or at night with the moon on the water. The deck was one of our favorites along with the fireplace since it was still chilly when we were there. It was nice and cozy.
There are so many positives that describe Linekin Bay. Research will tell you all the pluses about this tranquil, under populated, non-commercial cove only minutes from downtown. Breathtaking!
We had such a lovely week at Compass Rose cottage. You don't want for a thing.
It's all about their deck. The beauty of having three separate vantage points is that you are protected from almost all of the elements, I.e., a uncovered peninsula for #1 days, sheltered rocking chairs for #2 days and a partially enclosed section for #3 days. There are NO #4 & beyond days in Boothbay! Inside the house can best be described as a trip into the past w/wood burning fireplace(boy did we burn some wood), rocking chairs, fully equipped kitchen AND a welcoming bottle of wine and fresh flowers!
Their website is totally accurate. CR defines the words quaint and comfortable.
NOTE: As relatively active seniors we did have some difficulty with the entrance from the road, particularly at night. Fortunately they provide two flashlights to take with you when venturing out after dark. The path is lit but a bit rugged due to tree roots.
Also, the shower is on the second floor.
John and I stayed at the "Compass Rose" cottage the beginning of September. We loved every minute of our stay! This cottage is "the real deal" if you want a traditional, comfortable, adorable, quaint getaway on the rocky coast of Maine. Laurie has thought of everything to make your stay extremely relaxing, including a nice bottle of wine when we arrived (with the table set looking beautiful)! The cottage is a great place to "chill" on the deck overlooking beautiful Linekin Bay or conveniently located for daytripping to the many other great towns around Boothbay (museums, antiques, restaurants, parks, the harbor, etc). We woke each morning to the lulling sound of lobsterboats checking their traps (right in front of the cottage) and fell asleep to the sound of the ocean crashing on the rocks below. One highlight was the Bald Eagle in the tree right above the porch! He was magnificent! We walked into town or rode our bikes and used our small boat as the cottage has it's own dock! We will always remember our perfect week at the cottage and will definitely be back!
Wow! This place is wonderful for a great get-away to see Fall colors, to relax on the deck overlooking the bay, to explore the Maine coastal scenery, and for dining at the many resturants located nearby. The photos depict the house very accurately, the house was in sparkling condition, and the host was superb in having everything we needed. Upon arrival, we were greeted with seasonal decorations, flowers, and a bottle of wine. Even though we never met our host, her charming peronality was present everywhere with descriptions of things to do and places to visit. I would recommend it without reservation! EXCELLENT!!!! Thanks, Pat and Pat
