About Carolyn Henry

I purchased Casa de Alta Loma in 2013 as the fulfillment of a life-long dream to live close to a beautiful beach in an environment that soothes the soul. I have lived in and around Santa Cruz for a decade now and finally decided on just the right spot (Live Oaks) and the perfect home (Alta Loma). I use it often and enjoy the environment tremendously. I love to entertain my friends and family from the East Coast at the beach house - they just cannot get over how idyllic life in Santa Cruz can be. For example, the Saturday morning Ukelele and sing-along down on the beach is a unique way to entertain grandchildren as well as adults. We usually get coffee at the Kind Grind (right there on the beach) and just listen. My 4 yr. old niece has played along with the crowd. (Don't expect skilled musicians but do expect friendliness and old time sing-along songs.)

I was born and raised outside of Boston, MA and relocated to the West Coast to work in the Software Industry. I hope you come enjoy the house and all it has to offer.

Why Carolyn Henry chose Santa Cruz County

The location is ideal. You can hear the ocean, the sea lions, and the gulls but not the young neighboring renters who are right down on the beach. It's a 2 minute walk to the harbor where you will find a favorite restaurant -- Johnny's Harborside. It's a 4 minute walk to the beach which is wide and long. I often run the entire stretch from my beach down to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk all on the sand (at low tide!). It's about 13 minutes walk to the east entrance of the famous Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

Driving gets you to a lot of popular destinations: E.g., Shadowbrook restaurant in Capitola is 3 miles away and SF and Big Sur are each about an hour and a half away, in opposite directions.

What makes this house unique

Casa de Alta Loma is a great place to BBQ and I do often. The deck is pleasant and cool in the summer and a convenient place to dine.

The back cottage is fully supplied for two so a couple who wants a little privacy from the crowd have an ideal option. (I have personal friends who fit that bill.)

I use the internet too much but it is nice to be able to have access anywhere on the premises.

For whale watching or just ocean cruising, the nearby berthed Chardonnay II is a 70 foot luxury sailing yacht offering two hour to all day excursions including champagne brunches and sunset cruises.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“We had an absolute ball at this home. We used it mostly as a base camp for doing day trips, which it is perfect for. It would be equally fun as a retreat to stay in and just hide from the world. It's waking distance to great beaches, the boardwalk and restaurants. The bedrooms were clean and spacious. The furniture practical for kids but also gave a fun beach house vibe. The enclosed back yard gave the kids a place to play without fear of them wandering off. We were able to cook with all the kitchen equipment and loved having a grill! We had a few bumps in the road ( caused by my family) and Carolyn was gracious and kind in helping work it out. You can't go wrong with this place. ”

Family spring break getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time here, two families with 3 small kids & 1 infant. It was the perfect set up for two families-- so much so that we extended our stay another night. Carolyn was very kind & quick to respond. The house was very clean and well cared for. Great instructions all over that made everything very user friendly & easy-- gorgeous patio-- all around great trip!! Next time we will walk to the boardwalk-- we didn't realize it was an option until we read the info in the well instructed binder provided after the fact!! Regardless-- would highly recommend.

A wonderful gateway to the beach! It's a perfect place especially the short walk to the beach! A+!

  • 5 of 5

The 3 bedroom including the cottage fits a large family. Very spacious! Generous to lend us beach stuff, towels, wagon to bring to the beach (short walk) we cooked and ate in the backyard all the time! We played games on the round table that was wonderful! Thanks to Carolyn to welcome us.

Very relaxing stay!

  • 5 of 5

Exactly what we were looking for! We stayed with our kids, 6 and 8 for a week and it was very relaxing. Very quick and easy walks to the Boardwalk and the beach. The hot tub at the house was a hit, as was the gaming system and movies provided for our lazy mornings. Full and functional kitchen allowed us to eat in most of our trip, Many options for eating out within walking distance too. Quiet neighborhood and friendly folks. A very positive experience for our first ever VRBO!

Amazing Family Vacation!!!

  • 5 of 5

Charming, quiet and more amenities than you can imagine. The house was spotless upon our arrival and very cozy, even fresh flowers waiting for us. We had 8 people staying in total and had more than enough room for everyone. My immediate family and I, including 4 daughters, stayed in the house and my parents, in their 70's, stayed in the cottage out back. The location was perfect, we were able to walk to the beach and dinner and it was a short drive to the Boardwalk and the Mystery Sport. We cooked most of our meals at the house, the kitchen was very well appointed (especially love the electronic pepper grinder). We took the wagon to the beach every day, used all the sand toys and beach towels- everything was sooo convenient. This was a HUGE splurge for us and our only family vacation of the summer, and we LOVED every minute. We will definitely be back.
