Place of pilgrimage since the twelfth century, the Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene in Vezelay stands on top of a high hill overlooking the Cure on the edge of the Morvan Regional Park. In 1146, St Bernard of Clairvaux preached the Second Crusade, and it was the place where Richard the Lionheart and Philip Augustus agreed to meet for the start of the third crusade. Below this building are staged winding streets lined with old houses carved doors, staircases turrets, mullioned windows. The ancient walls that protected the city in the Middle Ages, are flanked by seven round towers and now form an interesting walk that goes from the fairgrounds at the foot of the hill to the castle esplanade behind Basilica.
