We enjoyed our stay very much. I'll start with the positives. This rental comes with access to Moose Lake with canoes and a motorized fishing boat. Tremendously fun fishing and going on day trips with a canoe. The real gem though, is the people at Williams and Hall. They are everything you want in a proprietor. Knowledgeable, laid back and kindness itself. The cabin was comfortable for our family of 4. No fancy digs here, but totally served our purpose. Sighted Bald eagles, muskrats and loons galore. The location was perfect, easy run into Ely. Loved the bear and wolf centers. Insula restuarant was delish and art galleries were fun and affordable. At the outfitter my kids loved the nice swimming area. I loved having knowledgeable people like Dave to help plan our outings.
My negative comments are only about the cabin. There is deferred maintenance. The hot water heater doesn't supply much hot water. Showers had to be quick and luke warm. We were there in unseasonably hot weather. No AC was fine. But....many windows have no screens and many of the screens had holes. The temp inside would get over 100 in the day and our ability to let in cool night air was limited due to the screen situation and the evening mosquitos. The screened in eating area has a very leaky roof but was nice and cool on dry nights.
Overall, the cabin served our purpose but the folks at Williams and Hall exceeded our every expectation. Having their location and expertise available to you is a huge bonus for this otherwise simple cabin.
Thank you for your comments. We enjoyed getting to know your family
and are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. We are happy to hear we were able to provide some expertise for your stay in Ely.
Thanks for the feedback on the cabin - we will be addressing the screen situation as soon as possible, as we understand how nice it is to have those windows open in the evening!
Comfortable and cute
Nice cabin, excellent outfitter, with outstanding employee's. Had an absolute blast! Would book here again without hesitation.
It is fine
We had a free weekend pop up a few weeks out and we found this cabin for a couple nights. Very limited options so late in the game across northernMN. The intention was to fish Moose Lake. The impression I had was that it was basically on Moose Lake.
"It comes with access to our canoeing waterfront, as well as a 14’ fishing boat (motor and fuel separate). You also have full access to meals in the Williams and Hall dining room." - description from the listing
The owner's outfitting business and all of the associated building are on the shores of the lake. But this cabin is NOT - you cannot see the lake from the cabin. It is about a 7 minute walk, or a very short drive to get from the main road (on which the cabin lies) to the lake. We did have dock access with our boat as promised. We did have to ask for a little attention in that regard though to move a boat around to make space, but the employee/owner took care of us. My impression was that we were a little unusual in that regard - meaning their main business is outfitting groups to canoe into the BWCA and they happen to have a cabin nearby. It makes sense.
But, I would be very clear about the location of the cabin. If we did not have a boat of our own or we expected to be there for a length of time, we would have been extremely disappointed. It is reasonable to expect to be much closer to the lake. The cabin location "dot" on the map shows it "in" the lake. It is reasonable to have a false expectation here.
The amenities were fine. Everything was clean, the cabin was quiet, and you are surrounded by woods. It is just off the "main" road. Of course up there, the main road is not heavily traveled. It was a fine place to stay.
The kitchen had the basics, although a few little additions to the cabinets would be good. There were some puzzles, which were enjoyed. No phone, no TV, no Wifi - which we expected to be the case. We did have cell coverage which came in handy for texting to be picked up from the dock (with our fishing gear). Half the fam enjoyed a chill time, a little hiking, a drive in to Ely, quiet reading, and the other half spent most of the waking hours fishing on a gorgeous BWCA border lake. I never grade on a curve. 5 stars to me is excellent. 4 is pretty darn close. 3 is not blown away, but not angry. 2 is disappointed. 1 is worthy of a full refund. This is a 3.
Fred's Cabin sits at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA). Boundary Waters region is characterized by a vast network of waterways and bogs within a glacially-carved landscape covered in boreal forests. The Boundary Waters is a popular destination for recreationalists pursuing camping, canoeing, fishing, as well as for those simply looking for natural scenery and relaxation. You can canoe into the Boundary Waters from Williams and Hall Outfitters' dock on Moose Lake.
