About Sybille Nelson
My husband Mark and I purchased our little farm from his parents in 2004. We are the third generation to own and live on this property. I moved here from Germany almost 30 years ago and worked in the banking industry for most of my professional career. Mark’s career was primarily in the machine tool industry. Both of us decided to leave our traditional corporate careers to focus on our farm related businesses and community. We now spend our days raising Labrador Retrievers to primarily become Service Dogs, gardening, and volunteering as Pet Therapy Teams in our community. We always wanted to have a Bed and Breakfast venue on our property as we enjoy meeting people from all over the world and love to travel ourselves. When it was time to renovate the original cottage we decided to convert it into a vacation rental as we have loved staying in these venues ourselves more than traditional hotels. We are looking forward to sharing our “little park-like farm” with others and hope to provide a great experience for all our guests!

Why Sybille Nelson chose Troutville
When new visitors come on the property we often hear “wow, I never knew this place was back here, it feels as if you are out in the country in a park but you are so close to everything”. Our driveway is only 1 mile away from interstate 81 at exit 150- B making it extremely convenient to get to Roanoke and the surrounding areas. We are a short drive from lakes and rivers, Breweries, Wineries, The Blue Ridge Parkway as well as numerous other attractions. We are also a convenient location when visiting the Universities: Virginia Tech, Radford, Hollins, VWCC, VMI, and Roanoke College. The property offers many opportunities to relax and just enjoy nature and the great outdoors. Our 30 acres border the Appalachian Trail, which can be used to walk to a local Coffee house or local Brewery. You can explore our large garden or just sit in our swing house and sip wine. The Virginia County Cottage Welcomes You!
What makes this Cottage unique
We love living in Botetourt County of Virginia. Our family ties, friends, and an environment rich in history are our roots. Our little park-like farm and visitors fill our hearts! The Town of Troutville, is a designated Appalachian Trail Community, where Trails Days are hosted in the Town Park every year in the month of June. AT hikers can be seen all around town throughout the hiking season from March to October. We are located just a short distance from some of the most spectacular view points of the Appalachian Trail: McAffee Knob, Dragoons Tooth, and Tinker Cliffs. The town is also part of the Roanoke Regional Rail Heritage district and as such an occasional train will pass through the town. Come and visit with us in the Town of Troutville, and experience a “small town with a big heart”!

Thumbs up to BlackTwig Cottage
Dog friendly cozy cottage. Country feel with quick access to interstate 81 and Roanoke Metro area. Better stocked kitchen than most rentals I have stayed in. Beds very comfortable. Plenty of relaxing entertainment things to do inside, books, table games. Video and Tv. Wish we were there in warmer weather so we could enjoy flowers and garden. Walked short stretch of Appalachian trail right next to property. Owners very friendly and willing to make stay as good as possible. Would stay there again.
We spent a lot of time on the 2 porches watching wildlife and fall foliage. The house was cozy and comfortable. Thanks for a nice experience, Mark and Sybille!
Thank you for being the perfect guests! This is a nice time of the year to see the leaf change and to watch all the wild life.
Beautiful, comfortable, mountain farm home
This home, surrounded by nature, created a happy atmosphere for our long weekend stay. We appreciated the porches where we could bird watch even when it rained one morning. All around the property were neat surprises and the Black Twig garden was especially impressive to me as I also grow an organic garden. The house was very cozy and comfortable. Sybille and Mark were wonderful hosts. The surprise treats were a big hit and we enjoyed the provided board games too. It was fun to explore the area and do some hiking and biking in this beautiful part of Virginia.
A Virginia country experience right outside Roanoke
The Cottage was perfect for our purposes. We planned to do some hiking and to explore Roanoke and it was well situated for both. The Appalachian Trail runs along the edge of the property. The place was immaculate, and has many very nice touches. Mark and Sybille have put great effort into making the Cottage comfortable, inviting and cozy. This is not just a business proposition for them-- you can sense the love and caring that went into the design and furnishing of the space. Everyone in my party was very happy to be there.
You will not be disappointed with this property! So well appointed and just perfect! Sybille and Mark haven’t forgotten a thing! They are just delightful hosts! We enjoyed a girlfriend getaway, but I would return with my husband, or just alone for some quiet time.
Great Country Getaway
This is a really lovely property with everything you could want for a home away from home vacation stay. The attention to detail was an exceptional and an unexpected delight. We really felt like we were guest in someone's private home. The owners were very helpful in showing us around and were available for any questions we had. It was such a wonderful experience, we'd definitely do it again. The cottage is in an area where there is plenty to do, only fifteen miles or so from downtown Roanoke. There are really great porches where we sat, relaxed, and enjoyed the deer and wild turkeys in a great country setting. It was everything we'd hoped it would be and more. We feel blessed that there are such wonderful people willing to open their hearts and homes to total strangers. Thanks for a wonderful time!
We LOVED having you stay with us! We also really like our location as we are literally everywhere we want to be within 5-10 min. It makes it so much more relaxing to be on the farm when you don't have to spend a lot of driving time to get to great hiking trails, grocery stores, restaurants, and other fun activity spots.
