Manchester Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

15 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, commercial kitchen, dining room, yoga studio/ballroom

This 24 room mansion is perfect for retreats, reunions, bridal parties, corporate gatherings and large groups that want privacy in a beautiful, natural setting in the heart of Manchester Village.

This enormous, 9,000 sq foot home features a grand ballroom with a wood burning fireplace that's a versatile space as a classroom, family game room with a ping pong table, wedding venue, crafting workshop or a sun filled yoga studio.

There's a commercial kitchen that's wonderful for cooking together, formal wood paneled dining room with a fireplace, a large living room with a piano and other musical instruments, and a game room complete with a ping pong and giant chess table and 15 bedrooms- all but three with private bathroom – so bring the whole family!

There is even a handicap accessible queen bedroom on the ground floor so grandparents don't have to climb the stairs. Pets are welcome too for an additional fee.

This 9,000 square foot home includes free WiFi and satellite TV, 5 private acres of woods and streams, a winterized large gazebo and a campfire..

The Battenkill Valley Mansion is only a mile from the Equinox hotel, but it feels a world away, surrounded by tall pines, and adjacent to the rolling fields of Hildene Meadow and the Battenkill River. Step outside your door for miles of scenic bike rides or runs along scenic River Road.

The historic Battenklill Valley mansion was built in 1904 as a wedding present for the daughter of the family who lived nearby at the Wilburton Inn. Guests of the Battenkill Mansion may now enjoy the amenities of the Wilburton Inn, including pool, tennis, and 28 acres of sculptures, flower gardens and breath-taking mountain views.

Manchester is a year round destination for sports, arts, and relaxation, less than 5 minutes away from designer outlet shopping, Orvis fishing, canoeing, tubing, hiking, and world-class golf. Bromley Mountain is only 10 miles away, and Stratton just 18 miles. The Dorset Summer Theatre Festival, Vermont Horse Show, Southern Vermont Art Center, Crafts Fair, and farmers markets are just a few of the fun nearby activities.

Guests are welcome to dine at the 1902 Wilburton Mansion where, for an additional fee, they can feast on a hearty country breakfast, evening cocktails or a gourmet dinner featuring artisanal whole-grain breads and dishes crafted with seasonal produce from the property's family-run organic farm.

The Wilburton Inn accommodates up to 150 guests in 8 buildings of different sizes and styles. It is an ideal private getaway for destination weddings, corporate retreats, family reunions, and private celebrations. Ask us how we can help you plan your next special gathering! We look forward to welcoming you.

About Melissa Levis

The Levis family has owned the Wilburton Inn since 1987. We are a creative family that loves working together and welcoming travelers to discover our magical estate. Because we are a close family, we especially love welcoming multi generational family reunions.

Patriarch Albert is a psychiatrist from Athens, Greece. He is the founder of Moral Science, the curator of The Museum of the Creative Process, and a pioneer in Conflict Resolution and the integration of the humanities and the sciences.

Innkeeper Georgette Levis, was the sister of Lazard CEO Bruce Wasserstein and beloved Broadway playwright Wendy Wasserstein. Guests are always surprised to see the huge Sisters Rosensweig poster in the inn’s living room. Georgette's family nick-name was Gorgeous and she inspired Madeleine Kahn's Tony award winning role in the Broadway hit.

The 4 Levis children include

Tajlei: an Andover, Columbia, and NYU law school grad who lives on the Upper West Side of NYC and is writing the Broadway bound musical adaptation of the TV show, Green Acres.

Melissa: a Middlesex School, Brown University and NYU award-winning songwriter who entertained thousands of NYC preschoolers with her band Moey’s Music Party. Melissa is delighted to be the new Maria Von Trapp and Vermont singing innkeeper.

Oliver: a Cornell grad (where he met his wife Bonnie) and together founded Earth Sky Time Community Farm and Bakery, a thriving organic farm based from our childhood home, 3 miles from the inn. Their breads are a delicious part of the Wilburton inn breakfast and their organic farm night dinners every Wednesday in summer are not to be missed!

Max: a Columbia, Harvard Divinity School and soon to be Boston University PhD. Max is the intellectual of the bunch and could have been a wonderful rabbi but instead chose to be a scholar and innkeeper. Max collaborates with Albert to pioneer an on-line program of emotional education and self-knowledge.

The 3rd Generation includes 7 grandchildren.

Melissa Levis purchased this chateau / country house in 2002

Why Melissa Levis chose Manchester

This robber baron estate has evolved through the 20th century from a private home, to a prep school, to an inn and now to an inn that celebrates life as a farm, a bakery, and a museum advancing creativity to become the core of education. This is a spectacular, huge home where guests can relax and truly get away from it all.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Tour our outdoor sculpture trails that show the history of love and the evolving images of women through cross cultural myths.

Visit our son's Earth Sky Time organic farm and bakery less than 3 miles from the house.

Great House for a Christmas Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful house for our week-long Christmas family reunion. The house was even larger and more comfortable than we had imagined from the pictures on the website. It easily accommodated our 20 family members with plenty of room to spare. The kids had plenty of room to spread out in their space, and the ping pong table in thegame room was a big hit.

The dining room was large enough for all of us to comfortably have dinner together every evening, and the fireplace in the dining room added to the festive atmosphere.

Dr. Levis is a very considerate and gracious host who made us feel right at home. Before we arrived, he had arranged to have a Christmas tree put up in the living room for us, and he checked in regularly to make certain that we were comfortable.

Manchester is a great place to visit. Lots of Vermont charm, an abundance of designer outlets and plenty of good skiing nearby.

We had a wonderful week and could have easily stayed longer.

Another Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

All 34 of us returned to the Battenkill Valley Mansion for our family reunion this summer, having had our first reunion there four years ago. We lived it then, but Melissa has made many improvements that make the mansion even more comfortable. Among the changes:

-Central air conditioning

-A lovely outdoor gazebo, and lots of additional outdoor tables/seating

-Addition of two ground floor bedrooms

-Kitchen and grill area are brightened up and fully equipped with cookware, glassware, and place settings.

-All 15 bedrooms are furnished attractively, including lovely linens and well-appointed bathrooms.

The location can't be beat! On a hot summer days, various members of our group went:

-tubing on the Battenkill

-exploring the Bromley Slide

-swimming at the Dorset Quarry

-lounging poolside at the main hotel

Really highly recommend the Battenkill mansion for your group too!

Our Favorite Place in over 35 years of Family Reunions

  • 5 of 5

Battenkill Valley Mansion was the perfect place for our family reunion of 20 adults and 13 children. This is our favorite place of all the places we stayed in over 35 years of family reunions. The bedrooms are large and some are suites, so those with young children can be comfortable in one room. The dining room, living room, and extra large game/music/dancing hall could all accommodate our whole group at the same time. These are exceptional features that made it easy to do things together and to find spaces for quiet times.

Manchester Vermont is a lovely town in the green mountains with many activities for children and adults. Emerald Lake is a great place for swimming and boating and is only 20 minutes from the house. Our kids used the pool at the Inn (an easy walk or 2 minute drive) every day. Golf, hiking, outlet shopping, restaurants, and more are all nearby. Everyone felt they needed more time to explore all the things that Manchester has to offer.

With a large house and a large group, things can happen, so you want a management team that responds to your needs. A summer hailstorm greeted us one evening and the electricity went out in most of Manchester. Max and his staff came with flashlights, candles, and an update on the situation, which did not last that long but to which there was a fast and efficient response.

Melissa, the owner, wants you to enjoy your stay. From the moment we met, she was gracious, available, and helpful, even volunteering to come to take family pictures. With many thanks to all for helping to make this a wonderful family reunion at this special place. We look forward to coming back for our next reunion.

Beautiful and Charming group getaway

  • 5 of 5

The folks at Battenkill Valley Mansion are an exceptional and charming host! The house is not only incredibly space but also very unique and able to accommodate a variety of activities. Our group of 22 came for a company Ski Trip and we were able to all fit with out any awkward arrangements. We were able to enjoy warmth by the numerous fireplaces located throughout the mansion, not something we get to do often in New York!

If there was anything we forgot to pack, town was only a short 5 min drive away, we were able to get to Killington in what seemed like 30 minutes. We had our lunch at Ski Mountain, but the Battenkill Mansion is great option to eat in, especially if you take advantage of their catering professionals!

If you have a large that wants some seclusion, but not to be right on top of each other I highly recommend this! Even in the winter! I look forward to the chance to return to this unique gem!

Beautiful Wedding Venue and Lodging

  • 5 of 5

We held our wedding at the Battenkill, and it was the perfect venue for a magical weekend. The house was large enough to accommodate all our guests (with a few overflows in one of the other lovely houses on the property), and the multiple spaces were adaptable enough to use for the ceremony, dinner, and dancing. It was so wonderful to be able to have everything in one place and not have to worry about transportation between venues, weather, or anything else. Max, Melissa, and Alan were great in helping us to determine and execute the layout we wanted, and arranging details around seating, a sound system, and more. We also used their catering service for our reception dinner, and one of their bartenders afterwards, and they were incredibly gracious and flexible with setting the menu (which was delicious) and figuring out just what we wanted. All our guests raved about what a unique, comfortable, and beautiful location it was, and we were thrilled to make wedding memories at the Battenkill. We will definitely be back!

Perfect for our Thanksgiving gathering!

  • 5 of 5

Our 31 person family gathering for Thanksgiving at the mansion was amazing! We had 3 generations there, and everyone had a great time. The ballroom was used for the Thanksgiving dinner, karaoke, yoga, crafts, and more. Outdoors, we had awesome bonfires at the fire pit, played some catch, and we took walks both right from the mansion and also on trails about a mile away. The roads are also excellent for those people that are joggers. The inside of the mansion is awesome… beautiful woodwork, large rooms, bathrooms for each bedroom, and excellent hiding places for the kids’ hide-and-seek games. We had a few minor problems when first arriving, but they were repaired as soon as we reported them. Great service! We have had three prior Thanksgivings at the mansion (every other year), and we have plans for another one in 2017. We love it!!

The mansion was built in 1904 by the Guilbert family as the home for their daughter. The total estate incorporated four farms and included 1000 acres. The Levis family acquired the Wilburton properties to house a cultural project. 25 years later, their properties include Earth, Sky, Time Farm Organic Vegetable Farm, The Wilburton Inn, and the Museum of the Creative Process. We also have the town's finest bakery.
