Lovingly rebuilt in 2005 from the studs up to maintain the integrity of the original 1926 craftsman bungalow with painstaking attention to detail. Original heart of pine floors, bead board, claw foot tub, Quarried Coquina stone fireplace–It is all new: New cherry gourmet kitchen with double ovens. New stone baths. New electric/plumbing/ drywall/windows- Everything new but “in period” and 1st Class. There is not a more charming rental available. Designed for large groups you can rent the MAIN house described here w/Piano, Pool Table & HUGE yard, or or add the FIRST FLOOR for extra 2Bed 1 BA & Greatroom & Kitchen
How is the Beach?
Best in Town: Since Beaches vary so widely, I will try to point out the main differences you should ask about.
First is the Powder Sand. The Chautauqua’s sand is like powder-not coarse ground up shells like some. Great for drip castles!
Second, at The Chautauqua the ocean is right At Your Door Step. There is no long raised boardwalk with a 5 minute walk across the dunes to navigate with the cooler & chairs before you ever get to the water. The ocean is right there.
Third, there are No Cars. This is a major distinction. Imagine trying to play paddle ball with cars continually passing by & having to be on constant baby alert. Not while you are on vacation!
Next, the beach is wide, level & private - Some beaches are very narrow & steep. It's almost impossible to ride the waves whereas the locals consider The Chautauqua the Best Surfing around. There 's a Surf shop with lessons & rentals at the end of our block but you can have loads of fun with the toys provide fee. No High Rise condos either!
How Is The House?
The Chatauqua Is A Classic: It starts with the Great room - 24 foot long – which acts as the main focal point from which the 4 Bedrooms flow.... plus a Huge Loft that houses w/4 Sleeping Berths (the Kids favorite part of the vacation with their own TV), Pool Table & Wet Bar.... and 2 Ocean View Porches. I fell in love the minute I saw it & spent over a year restoring it to its former glory. Everything was replaced in 2005 w/Top Of The Line materials. I designed it to be the Ultimate beach experience. A place where friends & family could come together & enjoy each other- Recharge their batteries.

How is the House?
THE CHATAUQUA - the name we took from the legal description which we loved once we learned how to pronounce it. It is a CLASSIC Cedar Shake 1926 CRAFTSMAN BUNGALOW. It starts with the Great room - 24 foot long – which acts as the main focal point of the house from which the 4 Bedrooms flow. I fell in love with it the minute I saw it and knew I had to restore it to is former glory. I think we even surpass it. We kept the original 1926 quarried Coquina fireplace. It is REAL Coquina - not what they make houses of now - Just like the Fort you will see in Old St Augustine! The Bead board wainscoted is also from the original house, carefully removed and replaned. The floors are Heart of Pine, sanded back to their original glory. They don’t even grow wood like that any more. Even the interior doors, all 8 foot, were patterned after the originals. There is loads of molding, all “in period”, specially milled. We even found the old picture mold with hooks for hanging photos instead of nails.
Then we started adding the NEW touches. A state of the art Gourmet Kitchen. Full wood Cherry Mission cabinets with tumbled marble backsplash and gorgeous sea scape metallic tile accents. The most unusual Granite I had ever seen. It is wonderful. Looks like sand. Black Glass Jennaire Double Ovens and matching Refrigerator, Microwave. Full array of cooking tools, dishes, pots and pans. Stainless Farm Sink and eating bar. Honed Chisel edged Stone floor. Large Laundry room with ironing facilities.
There are 2 OCEAN FRONT MASTERS both with full Stone Bathrooms. The first with West Indies style canopy bed features a Coral Stone Bathroom. Off-white shell stone floors and walls with black stone accents and cabinets. It includes an antique CLAWFOOT Tub complete with new Nickel fixtures and hand shower. Plus a RAIN SHOWER with BODY SPRAY, Two vanities with granite tops storage shelves and gorgeous Kohler farm sink faucets, wonderful Nickel light fixtures and private water closet.
The other Master with Cherry Sleigh Bed and matching Armoire features a bath of taupe colored stone with inset blue glass, a JETTED SOAKING TUB/SHOWER combo, White Cottage Vanity with matching Storage Cabinet, Granite tops and Stone Vessel Bowl sink. Also done in Nickel fixtures.
The 3rd Bedroom can function as a 3rd Master with single Day Bed or a children’s room. The walls are Bead Board with the bath done in an old fashion mosaic stone rug pattern and subway stone shower and wainscot. Unique circular white vanity with stainless accents and matching mirror plus White Storage Cabinet. Room for loads of Towels and everyone’s tooth brush no matter the number.
Bedroom 4 is also Bead Board wainscot with a Queen and a Fold-down Single. It uses the Powder room and the Loft Bath.
The Chautauqua of course has all the latest ELECTRONICS New AC's, Built-in Entertainment Center with TV/DVD and Stereo - TWO of those actually -TVs in each bedroom - Even the 3 Sleeping Berths come complete with TV and DVD players - Wireless Internet
Plus ENTERTAINMENT - A PIANO. You have to have a Piano at a beach house. Guitar and Game Tables. I am big on games so there are lots of Board Games. Upstairs is the POOL TABLE – and Wet Bar
PORCHES - The front porch is probably one of the best assets. This is where you will spend most of your time so there is LOTS of seating - All Teak Wood. We have 4 Rockers, 4 Adirondacks with stools, 2 benches, 2 sets of table and chairs – one on the porch and the other on the Patio. There is also an outdoor shower there and a stainless grill.
Yes, we tried to think of everything BUT…… as good as the main level is, most would agree the LOFT is the show place of it all.
The VIEW IS UNSURPASSED. With an arched Covered Porch recessed into the house for sun and wind protection, you can enjoy the view from another teak table and chair set or take some quite time to read a book from The Chautauqua’s LIBRARY. Or simply relax and take a nap in the ocean breeze on one of the Sling Chairs.
Where as the adults will enjoy the loft for the view - for the children it is the SLEEPING BERTHS they will be fighting over. There are 3 Single compartments complete with individual reading lights, TVs and DVDs, and under bed Storage Drawers for all their “stuff”.
A separate Full size alcove serves double duty as a bed and extra couch/play area. It comes with loads of shelves to store all the board games that are provided for your enjoyment. But the loft is more than just a place to sleep. There is a comfortable double recliner leather couch for lounging - A full size POOL table. Brand new. - A full WET BAR with antique corner sink, frig and extra microwave for late night popcorn. Even a PUSH BUTTON drink dispenser the children (or beer drinkers) will love.
The bath is a classic. All white Subway tile with mosaic floor and glass tile inlay band. The sink looks like a piece of furniture with Granite top, white Vessel Sink, and recessed lighted mirror niche.
That about does it for the house but if this is not enough space for your family or if it is too much........There is another option. You can always rent the bottom. Find the link to my Website for photos.
It is a separate unit with its own Greatroom, Kitchen, Garage, Laundry, Oceanside Decks & Outdoor shower. It has 2 bedrooms and 1 bath. The Master is Ocean side with Queen bed and sliders out to a Covered Porch. The Second Bedroom has a Queen bed and there is a Pull Out Queen Sofa in the Great room.
The look is different but charming in its own way. All STONE FLOORS, even the walls on the Porch. The Kitchen is actually larger than the main house. All Stainless with a long Glass Block under cabinet window. Great light! The bath is white Subway tile with Pedestal sink and blue glass accents - Jetted Soaking Tub. There is Flat Screen Plasma TV that hangs on the wall. 2 Game tables - one with a Texas Hold'em Table. Again everything is NEW!
Just call if you think you would like to rent it at the same time or if it is large enough to cover your group rent it instead. It will save you lots of money. It runs 1450/wk off season. It works great for a longer month stay during off season which we could do at a reduced fee (4 weeks for the price of 3). Just call to talk about the options.

My name is Linda Bayles. I have been a Reator with Remax in the Jacksonville/St Augustine area ranking in the Top 1% of Agents since 1998.
I work primarily as a Single Agent. There are not many of us out there. Most Realtors work as neutral Transaction Agents. You can googe 'Buyers Agent' to get an overview of the difference. I think it is big. Just ask yourself the question, Would I want the other sides Attorney to represent me too? That's it in a nut shell but the amazing thing is, unlike Attorneys, it does not cost you anything to have your OWN Realtor representing just YOUR interest. We are all paid by the Seller. So .... I would love to help if you are thinking about buying or selling in the area. Just call and I will start sending photos of homes so you can get familiar with the options before you come. Once here just let me know when you are available. We can see about 4 per hour.
Then in 2004, I fell in love with St Augustine Beach.
Linda Bayles purchased this house in 2006
In 2005 I walked into a 1926 beach cottage direct oceanfron on St Augustine Beach and knew I had found my calling. I wanted to 'Create' a vacation space for Families. Large extended families. A place were Cousins, Grandmothers, Uncles and Aunts can comfortably come together to reconnect and enjoy each other away from the demands of the outside world.
I come from a large family of 5 children as does my husband, Brad. Some of my fondest memories are when we all got together to just 'hang out' for 3 or 4 days. The little ones always come up with a 'play'. The adults always congregate in the Kitchen passing down the 'Family Recipes' to the next generation and playing Games. We are a big Game playing family. Specifically Rummikub . If you have never played, you should. I make sure there is one in each house and once you are hooked and have one of your own, hope you will think of your St Augustine stay every time you play. (Call and I will give you the rules)
So I bought that 1926 Craftsman, gutted it and turned it into The Chautauqua which sleeps 21. It has been a rewarding success.
In 2011, my Father expanded the tradition and bought 4 homes on 3 Oceanfront lots. We could not believe our luck and spent the next year remodeling them into The Seaside Cottages. We just put them on the market in June 2012.
Now I manage all 5.
The Best part is not only the houses but the BEACH. There are only 18 streets on the “Best Beach” - No cars. No Catwalk. The ocean right at your door. Everything within walking distance…. And we now have homes on 2 of the them!
I hope you will come stay with us and create memories you will cherish for a lifetime. Then I will consider it a success.

Wonderful property with all of the amenities to make our stay comfortable. Location is perfect! The kids LOVED visiting the beach each and every day. Staying at the cottage was perfect, because after a long fun day, it was the perfect retreat to relax and gather at. Would definitely stay here again! :-)
What a magnificent home! We had the greatest experience at Chautauqua. We rented the top 2 floors for 3 couples and 2 children, and couldn't have been happier. The view and beach are amazing. We had coffee and dinner on the porch every day, which was the epitome of Florida relaxation. My chef-sister loved the ammenities in the kitchen. The beds were super comfortable, and the upscale bathrooms made us feel like it was spa-time every morning. Another reviewer compared it to Pottery Barn, which my mother also had said. It is very close to historic St Augustine, where we went several times. I highly recommend Opus39 for fine dining there. There are also cute places just down the street (Mango Mango Grill), for take-out or a more casual dining experience (i.e. with children). My daughter still talks about wanting to go back to "the beachhouse" (she's 2), but that sums up how our entire party felt. We will definately be back!
Owner was super easy to work with. House was extremely clean! Loved the closet full of towels for us to use.
The Chatauqua was "as advertised" in every respect. The location is ideal for easy access to downtown St. Augustine; the layout is ideal for several couples or large families; the house and grounds were clean and in good order and equipped with everything that you need from beach towels and chairs to beach toys for the kids. The kitchen has everything there including spices, detergents and more cookware and wine glasses than most would need.
Linda has done an excellent job with this property and I will, of course, highly recommend it to all.
With the feel of being at home, from the classic hardwood floors, well appointed rooms, and perfect location right on the beach, the Chautauqua was a perfect Georgia - Florida getaway. From the beach access to the amply stocked towels and linens, it was above expectations. We will be back!
We had a large mixed group--adults, teens, big kids, & toddlers--and rented the whole house.
1) We had the toddlers, & took over the bottom floor apartment, which worked out great. It has a full kitchen, dishwasher, fridge, oven, bathroom, & washer and dryer. Two bedrooms and a living room. Outdoor patio. Direct access to the “beach supply room” and outside. We could get through our morning chaos downstairs without waking anyone up, and then meet everyone upstairs for breakfast / beach.
2) Baby supplies: Two highchairs, four pack and plays, umbrella stroller, nightlights, baby gate (not totally functional, but can be propped up)
3) House was ready for kids. Crayons, coloring books, a few kids books, dominoes, legos, DVD players for movies, little rocking chairs, tons of beach toys. Beach umbrella, lots of chairs and towels. Teenagers took over the very top floor with the bunks and pool table; had their own bathroom with shower.
4) Right on beach path / direct beach access. It’s a little bit of a hike for the little ones (my 3-year-old did okay, but did want to be carried or hauled on the sled sometimes), but an easy walk for everyone else. We used a plastic snow sled to haul kids and stuff to the beach, because it’s a sandy beach path.
5) “Beach supply room” is on bottom floor. Outdoor shower and utility sink, and all the toys, so we could wash off kids and swimsuits before going in. Leads right into bottom floor apartment.
6) Several casual dining spots within the block. Best one for us was Beachcombers, the little bar and grill directly next door (just a short walk through a parking lot to avoid the dunes). Has a fenced in area of the beach off the outdoor patio with toys for kids to play in—like a big sandbox--so you got the convenience of “eating out” without having to wrangle kids into carseats, or entertain them in the restaurant.
7) Pit Surf Shop just up the block was a big plus for big kids. They could walk up and rent surfboards or boogie boards, and sign up for surf lessons.
8) Lifeguard station & surf lesson meeting point directly in front of house on the beach.
Lots of stairs, and half wall on bottom floor/sidewalk. Was a concern with our 2-year-old, but there were enough people around to keep an eye on her. Definitely have to keep watch, because they are steep, & hard-surface. Bring watershoes for little feet; beach is shell-y, & have to walk through some sticks & beach debris to get to sand.
We had a wonderful stay at Linda's beach house, it is well kept and there is a lot of thought and care that went into the house. We rented the entire house (including the basement apartment) and felt that this was a great size and location for our family.
First and foremost the beach is wonderful, located just over the dunes there is an amazing view from the house. The beach has about everything you could ask for, it is shallow enough for little kids, good walking, shelling and surfing/boogie boarding. There are lots of beach toys and beach towels available for use.
All of the amenities in the house were wonderful, the only improvements we would recommend would be in the kitchen. A couple of new pans and a few kitchen towels are necessary in our opinion.
Linda was extremely responsive, one of the air conditioning units went down when we were there and they got it back up and working within hours.
I would highly recommend this rental and we would return without hesitation.
When you tire of the sun & surf there is lots to do in the area. I am working on this section but here is a start.
Downtown St. Augustine– Explore the Oldest City in the US. Take a horse drawn Carriage ride – enjoy the historic sites – the Castillo de San Marco - the Oldest School. There will be a scrap book at The Chautauqua for you to look through. Alligator Farm– Actually very well done. YMCA just around the block for workout facilities
Miniature golf just down the street - Anastasia State Park – Great place for windsurfing, fishing & bike riding on the sand. Rentals available. Surfing - Seriously this is where all the locals come to surf but they are not the 'California' crowd. All very friendly. You can get surf lessons at the end of the street from Pitt Surf Shop. Rentals available. Deep Sea or Intercoastal fishing - parasailing/jet-skiing - Antiquing - Great for browsing & reasonable. Outlet malls - Golf - TPC or World Golf - Marineland - Disneyworld
Other Activities: Best surfing beach in area with lessons and rentals at end of street
Golf: Loads of GOLF options.
Close by is Royal St Augustine on US16 with very reasonable rate.
The renowned World Golf Village is nearby at exit 323 off 95.
Famous Ponte Vedra TPC in Sawgrass is about 30 minutes away.
