About Karen Armel

Our family rented a variety of homes in the mountains of western NC over the years. We loved staying in vacation rentals, so when we found Pine Shadows Chalet and fell in love with it in 2003, we took the plunge into second home ownership. After a year we decided to share our wonderful vacation home with other families. It has worked out fabulously, and the people who have stayed have been top-notch!

For twenty years, I was professor of fine arts and humanities at Florida State College in Jacksonville, FL. My spouse is a retired journalist of The Associated Press and has recently published his first novel. So the chalet has a full library of books and music and is decorated with an artist's touch. Come enjoy our wonderful place.

Why Karen Armel chose Asheville Area

We keep our beautiful home well-maintained, updated, and guest-friendly. Your great experience visiting Pine Shadows Chalet is our top concern. Our guests -- some of whom return year after year -- say it best in their reviews. Please view them.

What makes this chalet unique

We instantly loved Pine Shadows Chalet because of its surrounding pastoral beauty. We liked that the home was at the top of a private road and off the beaten track yet in close proximity to the attractions and shopping in Hendersonville and Asheville. The house was custom-built in 1981 with a 25' apex in the living room at the top of the 5000-brick fireplace. We loved the many angles of the walls and roof lines, the interior brick walls, the natural oak doors, and the many upgrades too numerous to list. We were instantly drawn to the gorgeous westerly view from the living room-dining room, all the natural light, and the 'good karma' of the chalet. The owner/builders lived at Pine Shadows Chalet from 1981 - 2003. We are the home's lucky second owners.

The perfect place to stay while we competed at TIEC. So close, comfortable and accommodating! Easy to run home for lunch, snack, quick nap or to escape the heat. We will definitely make a reservation at Pine Shadows Chalet during our next show at TIEC or FENCE.

Happy, happy.

  • 5 of 5

Belatedly, I feel compelled to express my great satisfaction with our stay at this most comfortable, well-maintained mountain home Feb. 28-March 3rd 2016. The chalet was everything the owner said it was and it fit our needs for rest and relaxation perfectly. I am an obsessive reader, the chalet had its own library and a well-functioning fireplace that made reading more pleasurable. Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, several waterfalls and a variety of fine dining establishments were within a 30-45 mile drive. We fully expect to return.

Peace and tranquility

  • 4 of 5

We reserved the property for two nights initially. After arriving, we knew we had to stay just one more day. The owner was very accommodating and quick to respond. The house had all the comforts of home. The seclusion was amazing and yet it was only minutes to grocery stores when needed. The kitchen was equipped with almost any kind of appliance, utensils, and cookware you could ever need to prepare a meal. It made it nice to relax while cooking and enjoying the peace and tranquility. The beds were very comfortable and so were the sofas. We enjoyed the vast selection of books, dvds, cds, music etc. If you are looking for a relaxing visit...look no more!

3rd Visit to Pine Shadows!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our 3rd visit to Pine Shadows. We plan to make the Spring the 4th visit so we will have enjoyed all 4 seasons in this beautiful Chalet. Everything is so comfortable, clean and ready to enjoy as soon as you arrive. Karen made sure we felt at home with books, maps, events going on and the basics needed in the kitchen. We are fortunate it is only 4 hours away and plan to return in the Spring. If you want a get-away from the hustle of a busy life, Pine Shadows is the place. Very close to lots of nature, good food and galleries.

Great choice! Lovely setting and very comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The property is totally private and gorgeous views. There are books, games, movies, everything one could want and the home is beautifully furnished and very well maintained.

The owner was so accommodating, caring and kind in answering all our questions and concerns. This was impressive to us as some of the places we have rented in the past were of an impersonal nature. Makes a huge difference in the final outcome.

No question, we loved our stay and will recommend to our family and friends who will be travelling in the area.

**Wheelchairs: There are three exterior steps from the garage and from the front entrance into the cabin. The entire downstairs as well as the deck is accessible for wheelchairs through standard size doorways. Two bedrooms and a bathroom are downstairs. Living areas are carpeted with low-pile Shaw carpet. Kitchen and bath have wood flooring. The owner's parents, while in their 90's, comfortably navigated downstairs areas as well as the landscaped areas surrounding the cabin. Hand made fabric art quilts on tables and walls around the chalet were made by Scottish artist Lynn Bunis.
