Large eco-friendly villa with pool, lawns and terraces in private rural setting

A lovely, large, modern house with private pool and petanque pitch 3 kms from the village of Valdefuentes in Cáceres province of Extremadura. Set in 3.5 hectares of wooded farmland the finca offers guests a tranquility rarely found in the modern world, with only the sound of sheep bells and birdsong to disturb your holiday. Surrounded by beautiful granite outcrops and boulders the finca is located in a typically rural area of Extremadura with many paths and tracks for walking, birding or biking. The private swimming pool with adjoining lawns, shaded terraces and BBQ with views over the finca, are ideal for relaxing. Guests enjoy exclusive use of the house, pool and all other facilities during their stay.

Situated in the middle of a cultural triangle formed by Cáceres and Trujillo to the north, both with important links to the Spanish Conquistadors, and Mérida to the south with its stunning Roman and Moorish architecture, all World Heritage Sites, we are centrally located to visit the numerous tourist attractions in the region. For those with an interest in the Peninsular War the fortified town of Ciudad Rodrigo, beautifully preserved and still showing the scars of its important role in that conflict, is also possible to visit on a day trip.

Monfrague National Park, with its wonderful bird life, is only about an hour's drive away, while the small hilltop town of Montanchez, famed for the quality of the Jamón Iberico cured locally, is only 15 minutes drive away.

In the nearby village of Valdefuentes (3 km) there are a number of shops and bars and in the twice-weekly markets you can find a variety of fresh produce, local sheep and goat's milk cheeses and local meat products. A number of Bodegas in the village offer wines made from locally grown grapes.

The eco-friendly house offers modern, comfortable self-catering accommodation, with a large, open-plan public area having an efficient, centrally situated wood-burning stove, large granite-topped kitchen island unit and French windows leading out to the shady SE facing terrace.

3 large en-suite bedrooms, shady patios and terraces, BBQ area, a beautiful swimming pool and petanque piste are all available for your enjoyment and relaxation. The master bedroom has a private balcony and double sofa-bed for sleeping under the stars on hot nights. Free WiFi is also available.

The house has been built with the environment in mind and relies on solar energy for power and domestic hot water - we are totally off-grid. As a result the house is not equipped with a dishwasher but all bedrooms do have a fan and master bedroom has air conditioning. The water sourced from our borehole is potable and tastes wonderfully clean and fresh.

About Ian Bennett

Dain and her husband Ian were both brought up in tropical climates (Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka respectively) and have worked in Africa, UK and Belgium. As they approached retirement they looked for the quality of life they had enjoyed in their early years; long hot summers, far horizons and a slower, more traditional pace of life.

Why Ian Bennett chose Montanchez - Tamuja

This region of Spain, with its expanses of farmland dotted with shady holm oaks, and interspersed with ridges of hills covered in woodlands, both with many granite outcrops is very reminiscent of parts of Zimbabwe and Southern Africa. After travelling through the region back in 2003 we decided we would retire to this rural and ruggedly beautiful landscape.

It was love at first sight when we saw Finca Marowa as it was everything we had been looking for.

Although only 3 kms from the village of Valdefuentes the finca gives us the tranquility we were looking for, a view that we love and the satisfaction of creating a very special home that we would now like to share with you.

Although situated in a rural location we are close to good roads and services. Apart from our own pool and petanque pitch, there are municipal swimming pools in all the local villages. There is an excellent 18-hole golf course near Cáceres and a 9-hole course near Mérida (both about 40 minutes drive). Other activities in the area include an excellent karting track (15 mins).

This region is best known for its rugged scenery, excellent and numerous walking and cycling paths and, of course the bird watching. Monfrague National Park is 40 mins drive and the 4 World Heritage towns of Cáceres, Trujillo, Mérida and Guadaloupe are in easy driving distance.

Beaches and water sports are available on some of the large reservoirs in Extremadura (Proserpina near Mérida and Orellana near Don Benito are just a couple) and we are hoping a new one near Almoharin (20 mins) will be opening in the summer of 2017).
