About Amy Nakamura
Rita and Amy designed and built their own home, next door to the cottage, and in 2017, on an adjacent 10 acre parcel, cleared land, designed and built this cottage as our guest house. We are excited about being hosts to people from all over the world. We love to garden and have a large vegetable garden at our home, and are passionate about cooking and baking. Rita is formerly co-owner and co-founder of the New Scenic Cafe which is only a few miles from the cottage and still the best restaurant in the region. Amy is a retired contractor and looks forward to turning her talents toward SMALL projects, meeting and greeting guests, gardening, building a little jewel of a sauna, ... and the list goes on!
Amy Nakamura purchased this House in 1994
Why Amy Nakamura chose Palmers
This land, purchased in 1993, was a 40 acre parcel totally landlocked, with no access to the potential building site(s). Rita built a half mile long road into the property and built her first home which she later sold in 2012 after subdividing so she and Amy could build their new home. Finding property on the great Sucker River was a goal and obsession for Rita as her grandma had a small log cabin upriver where Rita spent much time as a child. Later, her brother then created a cabin on the Sucker River where she spent time retreating from a busy life in the Twin Cities. Finding this glorious property on the Sucker River was serendipitous. (I'll tell you the story if you ask how I bought it sight unseen). It hosts the biggest waterfalls on the entire length of the river and hiking the woods along the River's Edge in the State Land south of the property is truly magnificent.
What makes this House unique
This land is situated not only with the Sucker River on it, but it is set back from the County Road over 1300 feet offering seclusion and wooded beauty. The location just 20 minutes from Downtown Duluth and Canal Park, makes it the best of both worlds, private retreat and easy access. The location is 1 mile north of the Hwy 61 Expressway and the North Shore Scenic Drive (Grandma's Marathon Route). We are halfway between Duluth and Two Harbors, and a relatively short drive to many of the scenic rivers that flow into Lake Superior.

Beautiful, Serene, Private Cottage in Convenient Location
This cottage and its surroundings are serene. If you’re looking for a clean, comfortable, spacious, beautiful place to stay - built, owned and managed by kind, responsible people - look no further.
A less than 10 minute walk through the woods will bring you to the rushing, cascading Sucker River, a magical place for me. You do not need to be a kid to swim and float in the swimming hole! Staying at this cottage will allow you to enjoy a fabulous body of water without the crowds, at your convenience.
A five minute drive away is Stoney Point on Lake Superior This is not to be missed! Hint: It’s especially fun to go when it’s windy.
It was a joy to cook and eat in the cottage kitchen, but we did treat ourselves to a meal at New Scenic Cafe, a bright, casual but classy restaurant just a few minutes away. The menu is refreshingly different than most restaurants up north, and the service and food are excellent.
We took more than one trip to Duluth. It’s super easy to get there and other places in the area. Yes, you’re in the woods and it’s private, but you’re not in the boonies. It is, however, dark enough at night to see a beautiful starlit sky.
If you hit a bad weather time during your trip, you will not feel stuck. It’s a joy to be here. We played a game outside under the pretty awning on the front porch while it was raining. We also watched a movie on the TV which had superb picture quality. There are comfy spots to read, write or relax. Wifi is no problem if you need or want that.
Rita’s scones were the best I’ve ever had. We were sitting outside enjoying the morning sun drinking our coffee when Rita arrived with warm scones, not uninvited I should add. We were all fortunate to have the time to chat. It was a gift to talk to her and learn more about the area. (Soon after our arrival, we got to meet Amy who made sure we knew where everything was and how everything worked.)
If you’re worried this cottage surrounded by the woods will harbor more mosquitoes than someplace else, no need to worry. We experienced less bugs here than other places we’ve stayed on or near the North Shore. (Do, however, cover and/or spray yourself when you walk through the woods to the river. Also wear good shoes for the walk through the woods and for climbing on the rocks at the river.)
Sidenote: this cottage had the best notes left for guests that I’ve seen. Yes, you can call or text Rita and Amy, but we didn’t need to; we looked in the book.
This is a very nice place
We enjoyed the property real well. Beautiful cottage and location. Would certainly recommend it to others!
Great cottage in the woods
We used this cottage as our base camp for Grandma’s Marathon. The cottage was great and was in a beautiful location that was convenient for both Duluth and Two Harbors! Easy drop off for both the half and full marathon and great location if you are a spectator and want to bop along the route. Rita was a perfect host and we’d come again just for her scones. The house comfortable fit five adults and two kids. Outdoor seating was a plus. All in all we had a great stay and would recommend.
Five sisters get away
This is a wonderful 3 bedroom cottage with everything you need! Rita and Amy were such gracious hosts. Rita brought us some delicious scones our first morning. It is in the country but close enough to Duluth for many activities. We will be using the beautiful Wildwood cottage again! Thanks again Rita and Amy!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this cottage! Very clean, great location, and everything needed to enjoy the stay. Making s’mores around the campfire in this peaceful setting was perfect for our family! Communication with the owners was excellent also. I highly recommend it!
Thanks so much Patrick for you and your family being such fabulous guests! Your care AND enjoyment at wildwood cottage makes us very happy hosts! We hope to see you again before long.
The cabin is very nice. Owners did a great job. If traveling between Two Harbors and Duluth nice place in the woods to stay
