About Mireille Reichwein
I have been a retired teacher/translator since 2008 and I inherited this secondary residence when my mother died in 2013. We renovated it according to the latest standards, renewed the beds etc. in order to turn it into a first grade residence combining style and modern comfort. My husband, a retired delegate of the German foreign trade (Federal Ministry of Economy) is fanatic about Upper Provence and wished to build our main residence in Buis, very close to L´Oasis.
Mireille Reichwein purchased this Villa in 2013

A perfect paradise!
After staying at L'Oasis, my family and I wish we could relocate to this home permanently! We had the unique opportunity to stay for 10 weeks during a sabbatical, and we even enrolled our children in the local public school. Mireille and Franz were perfect hosts, assisting us in so many ways as we settled in, even walking us to school on the first day to make sure we found the short-cut over the historic Roman bridge nearby.
The house was sparkling clean and thoughtfully prepared. The kitchen had modern appliances and all of the pots, pans, dishes, and utensils we needed. The bathrooms appeared brand new. The beds were comfortable, and the living areas had plenty of space for dining and relaxing. We appreciated the heating and air conditioning units to keep comfortable as the weather changed.
The upstairs is accessed by steps from the deck, and the deck and stairs are covered so that if it rains you do not get wet going to and from the upstairs. The upstairs unit is spacious with a warm and cozy feel, and it has a modern bathroom. There is not a kitchen upstairs, so the upstairs unit is best used in combination with the first floor unit.
The garden was a beautiful private oasis, with an outdoor dining area on the deck and lounge chairs in the garden. There was also a ping pong table that we enjoyed. The garden was full of flowers and songbirds and is a very peaceful place to relax. The views of nearby mountains are stunning.
The location of L'Oasis couldn't be better. It is quiet and safe and just outside of the main area of town by about 500 meters. We could easily walk to a grocery store or bakery or market in under 10 minutes. Our children's walk to school was under 1 kilometer, and there were numerous nearby restaurants that were within a kilometer. We also enjoyed walking to the small river L'Ouveze which was actually quite perfect for swimming on a hot day. Outstanding rock climbing was within walking distance, and there is an amazing via ferrata with a nearby outfitter, again within walking distance, to provide gear and guides if desired. But what we enjoyed most was cycling. We spent many days enjoying the amazing roads and trails accessible from the house. I've never experienced such amazing cycling before, and we will be certain to return to do more.
I haven't even mentioned the amazing local food and markets, but I am out of space!
We will have a lifetime of happy memories from our stay at L'Oasis.
Thanks for this detailed description and your appreciation of L´Oasis and its surroundings.
Franz and I do hope to see you again in our Baronnies provencales... before the next sabbatical!
Au revoir et merci pour votre visite!
Very nice villa
This house is very good value for money. Fully equipped kitchen, good furniture and a very nice large garden. I could easily have stayed a lot longer. The only drawback is that there is only electrical heating during the cold season - this can't really keep the house warm during a cold April night but we were never really cold.
I know the area quite well after many visits during the last 25 years and this house is without comparison the best place I have ever stayed.
Thanks for your appreciation!
I am surprised by your comment about the heating since we receive regularly visitors during the winter on both floors and the heating is more than adequate! I suspect you did not switch on the air-conditioners and the heaters properly. You should have asked!
Beautiful house in beautiful grounds
We had 9 nights here. If only the weather had been as good as the house! L'Oasis is spacious and beautifully furnished. Lots of space both inside and outside on the balconies or on the patio or just lying on the lawns. The property is on the edge of town within walking distance of the centre of Buis-les-Baronnies. Buis is a small attractive town with a long history and some bustling bars and restaurants. The surroundings are mountainous, green and beautiful.
We were on a rock-climbing trip, and were perfectly situated, with the nearest climbing less than a mile away.
Mireille, the owner speaks perfect english and is very welcoming and helpful.
Thanks for your detailed description and your appreciation! See you again!
Very nice, spacious villa set in large gardens
The house is very nice, and is situated in a large garden with lots of seating, either in or out of the sunshine.
It is well looked after and the living rooms are large and airy, with lots of big windows and light coming in.
For climbers, you can sit on the balcony looking up at Rocher St Julien
(north face though, so not the climbing side).
Buis is a nice little village with a few bars and a couple of good restaurants, and surrounded by some tremendous countryside
(including lots of famous Cote du Rhone Villages appellations - if you like that sort of thing).
Thanks! I am glad you enjoyed the countryside and the climbing as well.
See you again!
Lovely House and gardens
Great property with all the facilities we needed. Lovely sitting room and fantastic garden. Easy walking distance to the town where there are lots of restaurants. Excellent location - we were cycling and the area is superb. Mireille could not have been more helpful - thank you from all at Barnes Cycling Club.
Thanks for your detailed comments! We are so happy your stay was a success and you enjoyed L´Oasis! It was a pleasure to have you. Maybe "Au revoir"!
NATURE, SPORT, CULTURE!
Situated in Upper Provence on the border of Drôme and the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d´Azur, Buis (370m alt.) is 20 km from Vaison-la-Romaine, 35 km from the "Giant of Provence", Mount Ventoux (1917m), 60 km from Avignon.
This prealpine region offers a varied climate, an alpine as well a mediterranean flora, a protection from the "mistral", a wind frequent in nearby Vaucluse.
It boasts a rich gastronomy based on specialities like olives, goat cheese, Baronnies lamb, cherries, apricots, wines, aromatic herbs. Buis was the origin of the herb company Ducros! The upper Ouvèze valley is a delight with its deep blue lavender fields. And everywhere, the song of the locusts...
Its dry, most healthy mediterranean climate (no mosquitoes) makes for crystal- clear blue skies and remarkable starry nights.
With its 2400 inhabitants the village is a little regional centre endowed with three supermarkets, a cinema, a concert hall, adequate medical facilities. The daily and weekly European press is available everyday at Carrefour and at Maison de la Presse.
But it is essentially a little paradise for holiday-making, hiking, climbing, cycling and outdoor sports. The ideal seasons for cycling and climbing are the spring and the autumn. If the touristic season par excellence is Easter to October, Buis hosts guests all year round. Regional, national and international sports competitions take place in Buis in various disciplines throughout the touristic season.
Buis is situated on the GR9 national hiking trail passing by Mount Saint-Julien (one of the three classified climbing sites). It is also a starting point for horse rides thanks to several riding schools. Bicycle and mountain bike fans will relish excursions on even ground or steep slopes. The boldest will come to grips with Mount Ventoux! Nearby are opportunities for wilderness swimming.
The guides´ office, opposite the walkway lined with plane trees, offers climbing, via ferrata, canyoning, water excursions, potholing, two-seater paragliding and training sessions. Some excursion centres are specialized in hiking, horse, bicycle, mountain bike and motorbike rides, tours by car and quad and in training sessions. Two other paragliding schools offer one day trials as well as training sessions with aerial video recording.
The via ferrata - 1700m, the second longest in Europe - comprises 4 itineraries with increasing difficulty, one of which being an initiation. It is equipped wth cables, stairs, aerial bridges and footpaths. Acrobatic by nature, the via ferrata allows hikers to discover the world of mountaineering thanks to a playful mountain activity between hiking and climbing. As a reminder, the first via ferrata was created in the Italian Dolomites during the 1914-1918 war to transport men and artillery.
But you also come to Buis to visit and treasure a well-restored heritage, a charming village with its medieval centre, its plane- tree-lined walkways, its pétanque fields, its typical panorama, its Provencal market.
Southern Drôme and bordering Vaucluse offer a wide range of natural and architectural sightseeing sites : castles, abbeys, fortified uphill villages, museums, Roman vestiges (Vaison-la-Romaine, Orange), the Pope Palace in Avignon.
Buis also hosts lots of cultural events during the summer :
_ Classical music festival (Sérénades en Baronnies)
- Festival de Jazz (Parfum de Jazz)
- Flute festival (Trio d´Argent)
- Theatrical shows (several companies)
- Concerts in the church, the concert hall, in the town hall garden, in the courtyard of the former dominican monastery etc.
The full agenda can be consulted at Office de Tourisme in Buis.
Nearby, the Roman amphitheatres of Vaison-la-Romaine and Orange as well as the Pope Palace in Avignon organize quality theatrical and musical festivals. Besides, Vaison is in Europe a centre for choir singing with frequent international competitions.
But let´s not forget pure relaxation! For a few hours - or a cure - the spa in Montbrun-les-Bains welcomes you 28km from Buis.
