Absolutely loved our stay at SuGar cottage!!

  • 5 of 5

First time to the Big Island- travelling with my son and his girlfriend.

Garry and Susan are lovely people and very accommodating. Garry took us out snorkelling at the local snorkelling spots and was very patient with our first-time snorkeller. He is so truly excited to show you his paradise! We want to take scuba lessons at home and come back here to complete our open ocean dives.

The house is older- and not fancy- but so comfortable! We spent most of our time on the screened - in lanai, with the gentle sounds of birds and frogs, it feels like you are in a tropical jungle.

Everything you need is in the kitchen- blender, coffee grinder, coffee maker, etc

Garry and Susan plan to stop renting this house in the near future but have a second property that although smaller- would likely be awesome as well.

Thank you Garry and Susan- such a pleasure to meet you - I so appreciated your warmth and great sense of humour!!!

Great Time At Sugar Cottage on the Big Island!

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay with Garry and Sue at the Sugar Cottage...first time in the 2BR. The cottage is a described and better in person that shown in the photos. Away from the chaos and traffic of Kailua-Kona, the cottage is safe and secure.

We enjoyed our many scuba adventures with Garry...Two-Step, Miloli'i and Pebble are great fun.

Hopefully, we will return before too long.

As frequent travelers who rent from quite often, I highly recommend Sugar Cottage.

Great Experience

  • 5 of 5

We spent two nights here and had a great time. Garry took us out snorkeling and showed us wonderful places that we would not have seen on our own or with a paid snorkel boat. We are very grateful for the experience!!!!! The house is large but you will want to spend your time on the Lanai (screened covered porch). The living part of the house is 2nd floor and looks out on a wonderful canopy of tropical vegetation. The sounds of the birds and frogs are a joy to listen to. It is at the end of a dead end road with a very private setting. If you want to snorkel or dive the South Kona area this is a real opportunity offered at a very reasonable price. If you are looking for granite counters and 600 thread sheets you won't find them. But, if you are looking for a wonderful experience of staying in a tropical rain forest by night and snorkeling or diving or exploring by day - this is a great choice.

Quiet, Clean and Roomy Cottage

  • 4 of 5

First, I have to say after reading the last review I was worried about staying at the Sugar Cottage. I'm so glad we were able to experience a very quiet and secluded get away. The cottage is exactly as shown in the pictures, it was clean, and well stocked with kitchen utensils and bathroom towels. The bathrooms were very clean. The best part of the cottage is the screened in porch where you can eat or sleep on the futon. Garry was very easy to work with and called the first day to offer any help or advice. I'm not sure why the last reviewer was so negative, but we highly recommend the cottage. The only reason I am giving a four star is due to the living room furniture being a bit uncomfortable for my husband's back. This is a great place for divers, snorkelers or like us, just enjoying the scenery.

Buyer beware

  • 1 of 5

My wife and parents thought we would be getting what is in the pictures but it is not what is there now. Let me preface this by saying before we came to the island we were involved in an accident and I had a problem with a wound on the bottom of my foot. I had to keep it clean and could not risk infection. When you drive up on the property you are greeted by two rusting vehicles on the property, and the first thing you notice when you walk in is a rusting fridge, and the smell of rodent feces and mildew. On the ground right next to the screened in lanai is rat poison and rat droppings and urine. The bathtub had mildew all over the tile, bath mat and the outside of the shower curtain. Carpet has pulled away from some of the tack strips, instead of repairing they have plastic covering the strips which I almost tripped over heading into the bathroom. I contacted the owner the next day because we were not going to stay and head home because of my foot, I asked if I could get a refund, was told no said I understood and I would talk to my family. We decided to stay as long as the owners would come clean the cottage, I said i would also ask about moving to the downstairs because it would be easier on me and my foot. I called back and talked to the other owner, and asked about downstairs was told no, it was used for storage, then I asked that the cottage be cleaned because of my foot. Was pretty much told no and that they had spent 4 hours cleaning the place, I said I could not see it, and brought up more of my concerns, was told that I should find somewhere else because they were not happy to me. I made the decision to leave the next day, but before I did I had to take a shower and this is not exaggerating but I used and entire gallon of bleach to clean the bath tub and it still was not enough to get rid of all the mildew. I have taken pictures of everything I encountered, the caked on dirt on the water dispenser, the rodent droppings in the house, the leak drippings from the sky light. I then emailed the owner to tell them I had left and I was very upset, but all I got was they would give me another 8 nights since I was leaving along with a kayak tour, and that my concerns were not true, so they then called me a liar. I wish I was able to share pictures to show the true nature of this cottage. I offered to send the pictures, but not have had a response that they would like to see them.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry this guest had an automobile accident before coming over to our cottage. It isn't part of our policy, but we would have gladly given him a rain check for the dates he reserved. We were not even contacted for the first 2 days of their stay. We try to meet with our guests upon their arrival to take care of any needs. After the 2nd day we received an e-mail and called them immediately. They requested to stay downstairs at this location which is not used for guests, rather is used for storage. I would guess they then made reservations at another location wanting a refund for the remainder of their stay at our cottage as they were staying on the Big Island rather than going back home. This was when a flood of complaints were sent our way from rusty vehicles on the 3 acre property (sorry our work vehicles didn't meet their expectations) to unclean conditions at the cottage. We were accused of calling our guest a "liar" when we told him the cottage was clean. It's a shame we couldn't have met with our guests in person and that they had to spend part of their vacation fabricating issues that never existed. We have too much pride in our vacation rentals and concern for our guests. We have too many guests that come back to see us to justify these very sad accusations. We keep our offer open to these folks of a rain check for the remaining days of their reservation a long with taking them out on a kayak tour. If they were scuba divers we have our policy of taking divers out on shore dives and provide weights and air.

Rainforest Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful trip to Hawaii and it all started here! Thank you Gary for taking us diving in great

locales. As beginner divers, we really appreciated all of Gary's patience and help! He had extra equipment that we used, took his jeep down with us every day, and provided tanks and weights. Our teenage son really enjoyed talking to Gary about music. We are so glad that we stayed here and received an insider's guide to Hawaii's diving and snorkeling. The cottage itself is spacious, clean, secluded and has a wonderful lanai to sit out on and eat meals or just relax. We'll definitely stay here again if we come back. Thank you again, Gary and Susan for being such thoughtful hosts and making our vacation so memorable.
