History of Benissa
Many cities along the Costa Blanca were founded during the occupation by the Arabs, and as a result their names are of Arab origin. Therefore, Beni Isa, which means "son of Isa" .A over the years have left Arab influences oriental features in the Spanish culture that even today are very evident. In 1248 James I of Aragon Benissa subjected to the rules of Christians, but like all military resources in the area were fighting against the incursions of the Barbary pirates (especially during the 15th and 16th centuries), the population of the city continued It is mainly Arabic. The expulsion of the Arabs did not take place until 1609, when populations from Catalonia, the Pyrenees and Aragon began to settle in Benissa.
During the late 80s and early 90s the city has undergone a major renovation of its historic to combat obsolescence and the traces of time downtown. Everything has been renovated, the old houses of the 17th and 18th centuries, narrow streets, churches, City Hall; as a result the city has been reborn, becoming a radiant city.
Around Benissa they are really wonderful. Landscapes, light, Mediterranean flora, all living in harmony. The natural environment of the surrounding areas are protected by the government, a policy that has helped to preserve the authentic character and atmosphere of the city.
Situated between the spectacular cliffs and rock formations of the Costa Blanca and the great chain of mountains in the hinterland, Benissa and its geographic location truly make it an unforgettable place. A short drive away will take you to the old leaning on large farms and vineyards with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean landscape.
Be amazed by the 4 km. coastline that connects the towns of Moraira and Calpe. Here you will find rustic little bays where the infinity of the horizon blends with an endless blue sea where you can relax and recover from the problems of everyday life, and where the view is really impressive.
It is the most popular beach in Benissa, awarded with a Blue Flag, which has excellent facilities for children. The Fustera is a sandy beach with a small harbor, a sailing school and a diving center. It is ideal for various water sports such as windsurfing and sailing.

Things to do in Benissa
The medieval city center with its plaza, narrow streets, and churches, has been incredibly well preserved. Balconies with typical iron railings and coats of arms adorn the historic buildings.
Benissa has a strong Catholic tradition that runs throughout the city. The Franciscan order produced many followers scattered throughout the Spanish geography. The most important part of this heritage is the neo-Gothic Cathedral de la Marina. This white church was built in the era of 1920, financed by wealthy freemasons of Benissa. It was inaugurated in 1929 during the festival of San Pedro. The cathedral is 59 m. long, 29 m. tall, and has an imposing shrine in honor of the patron saint, Our Immaculate Xiqueta. The characteristic light that illuminates the altar is something you should not miss.
A stroll through the town will lead you to the historic center with its impressive market square of the fifteenth century, the Contractual Marketplace (old Maas Benissa building, which also serves as Ethnographic Museum), in front of City Hall (a former hospital for the poor ), and the Palace of the Torres-Orduña (now the cultural center and the local library). You will also find the Casal de la Joventut - an old prison that now serves as a center for Joventut.
On the outskirts of the city between the orchards are routes that run along the Costa Blanca and the Ribereros (temporary workers who collected the rice crop) used to reach the coast of Valencia. Today, the symbol of Benissa is a monument to the Ribereros.
There are many guided tours weekdays.
Sports and entertainment
The rugged landscape of Benissa is ideal for sports such as climbing, hiking or horseback riding. The routes are marked especially for visitors and will lead you along Sierra de Berne, Solana, and mesh Oltà Verda.

They also offer opportunities to practice kayaking, wind surfing, catamaran sailing and fishing. It is impossible to be bored in Benissa.
"Discovering Benissa 'also means soaking up its flavors and aromas. Valencian cuisine shines itself with the abundance of dishes of Benissa. Mixtures of herbs, spices and local products from the sea and the land that are prepared in traditional ways to cook dishes for those who enjoy the finer things in life, from amateurs to experienced palates.
Try Borreta Melva (fish stew), Mullador of Pelleta (fried vegetables), Sang amb fattens (blood sausage with onions), Putxero of polp (octopus stew), Mullador of sangatxo (fried tuna), Coke to Calfo (cornbread).
But the variety of rice dishes, too, is infinite and is prepared in all forms: arrós al forn (baked rice), faba arrós amb peeled (peeled rice with beans), arrós fesols i amb naps (rice with meat pork, beans and cabbage), arrós of senyoret (rice and seafood), arrós a banda (cooked with fish broth), and many, many more.
A special note about Benissa sausages: Benissa is known per se for this traditional product, whose recipe passed down from generation to generation, and therefore is much to the culinary heritage of the city. The ciudado and effort of the local sausage producers have succeeded in changing just any sausage on a meal fit for the gods.
