Mountainside, open-concept house & studio with infinity-edge pool - sleeps 7
About Jamé Farrar
DeVeras is the manifestation of our mother's dream to exist in a place that allows one to live every day intentionally connected to nature and mindful of the present moment. From the architectural design that leaves a very small ecological footprint, to the unique location, all characteristics of the property lend themselves to the sensation that you are elevated, yet intimately sharing space with the wildlife and the mountains. We sisters, Jamé and Michelle, live in Texas. Our families and professions keep us here, but we return frequently to unwind and get our "mountain hug" on the gigantic front porch.
Jamé Farrar purchased this Cabin in 2016
Why Jamé Farrar chose San Simon
Why this property? Interestingly enough, Portal means gateway. Therefore, to answer this question you simply have to sit on the front porch, or inside on the couch and gaze through the gigantic picture windows, toward the "portal" in the rocky outcropping of the mountain straight ahead. With a few deep breaths, you will undoubtedly feel as though you've stepped from a world of crowded streets and technology into a place where you can get as far removed from the chaos as you'd like.
What makes this Cabin unique
The most distinct feature of DeVeras is the overall design of the house. Any room opens to expansive, breathtaking views and yet leaves one with the feeling of intimate connection to the mountainside. Whether relaxing on the front porch or in the living room, in front of the picture windows, we always find time to stop and appreciate the moment as we breathe deeply. And if by chance the main house isn't quiet enough, there are the studio and the pool. Both are good for relaxation or inspiration!

Architectural Gem in South East AZ
We absolutely loved this quaint architectural gem in South Eastern Arizona. Charming design, great natural lighting, super clean, breathtaking views, extremely comfortable, quiet and relaxing retreat on the eastern slope of the gorgeous Chiricahua Mountain range. If you want to escape with all the comforts of home, this is your place. So happy to have discovered this special place. Hoping to come back many more times.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at the DeVeras house. We used it as a base to explore the surrounding Chiracauha mountains. This is one of my favorite areas of Arizona.
The elevation and views from DeVeras certainly make us want to venture into the surrounding area... It's always fun for us to share with others :-) We are so happy to have been your base of exploration! You are welcomed back any time!
A beautiful house in a beautiful location! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to stay there again.
Thank you so much for the compliment! We are pretty fond of the mountain view too. We would love for you to stay again :-)
We were here for a conference in Rodeo New Mexico (population estimated 100), and although this is technically in AZ it was only 15 min away. This is probably the most beautiful place you will stay at if you are staying in this very small town. We only saw 2 star accomodations around the surrounding areas so we are happy that we did not have to lower our standards by finding this gem. We loved the modern and contemporary loft feel and the gorgeous mountain views. You should definitely come during the day time for your first time as it is a bit challenging to find at night time if you have never been. The owner was very communicative, friendly and helpful and even let us bring our small parrots.
We are flattered that you so thoroughly enjoyed our little mountain hideaway :-) Who says you can't enjoy nature at an elevated level of comfort! And you are spot on, as far as new arrivals- we recommend getting there in the daylight if at all possible. And of course if it's not, we will certainly take care of folks. We hope you will visit us again!
Hot and Cold
The home and homesite are quite beautiful and, as the listing also accurately states, it is indeed both close and remote. We loved these features.
Unfortunately, our stay during the end of August had some rather major issues. Although it was quite comfortable outside, the solar gain from the huge undraped westerly facing window-wall and the expansive thermal mass in the first floor made the house extremely warm: 90+ degrees at 8:00 PM. In spite of all efforts (no AC), it proved impossible to cool the house off at night: still in the 80's well after midnight and even warmer in the upstairs bedroom. It was so uncomfortable, we ate outside and came very close to sleeping elsewhere during our stay.
Although the uncovered infinity pool needed more water and should have been professionally cleaned, this was unimportant as its temperature was akin to a swedish bath. Its 60-something water temperature is due to a heater that was not to be turned on for guests and a pool that was in the shade half the day.
In summary, even though the owners and property manager were personable and considerate, unless these issues are addressed, visits during summer months should be avoided entirely, and the pool will remain just a pretty feature regardless of the time of year you visit.
Thank you for the feedback. It's good to know that while we accurately depicted the fact that our home is both Eco-friendly and remote (yet just above the town of Portal), there remain those few guests who might need further elucidation. You are 100% correct - southern Arizona is hot in the summer months and there can be a couple of weeks in those hottest months when there is no mountain breeze. However we do have two high velocity fans, in addition to the ceiling fans. These along with open windows at night, typically cool the house comfortably. We have also found that folks often enjoy a quick dip in our unheated pool, that stays amazingly cool even when you could cook eggs on the rocks nearby.
Speaking of which, we do have an experienced, professional pool cleaner who maintains the pool on a regularly scheduled basis. Following several days of crazy weather just prior to your visit, we were disappointed to hear the pool took on a more “natural” look than we’d like it to. For that, we are very sorry.
We hope that perhaps you will come again for a visit in the Fall months, so that you can enjoy the floor to ceiling westward facing windows and their uninterrupted view of the mountains, as well as the "portal" as the sun sinks over the horizon. At that time of year, you will surely be able to enjoy a glass of wine and a breeze on the front porch, while you listen to the birds singing in the trees over the creek-bed below the house.
Architectural gem with sublime views!
What a perfect place to spend our weekend!
We are so glad to experience this truly one of a kind house and setting in Portal, AZ.
The views are outstanding and one can enjoy them either inside through gorgeously large windows or outside on the front deck or back deck..
The house is a beautiful work of art and has many comfortable seating areas and has all the amenities one would ever need.
There are books, games, and even deer sightings!
We loved our stay and consider this Vrbo to be one of the best!
It is always a pleasure to share DeVeras with those who can appreciate its unique characteristics! We hope that you were able to fill your senses with the peace of the mountainside and that perhaps a piece of that has stayed with you. You were wonderful guests and we certainly hope that you'll come back to sit on our porch again soon :-)
Portal has many nicknames including "The Yosemite of Arizona," "The Great Barrier Reef of the desert," and "Sky Island." All refer to the incredible natural wonders, both geographical and biological that can be encountered here. Portal lies on the east side of the Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona's largest mountain range. Due to the astounding biodiversity and history this area has to offer, it has not surprisingly become a world-renowned destination for herpetologists, entomologists, geologists, botanists, chiropterologists, astronomers, archeologists, and birders. The Southwestern Research Station in Portal stays busy with researchers. Portal has been said to have the highest Ph.D. rate per capita of any community in the state of Arizona.
The unique and natural diversity of the area, rich in riparian birding spots, bring in Birders from all over the world. There are stunning cliffs and rock formations that beckon rock climbers to the area as well, including the “land of 1000 spires” which refers to the Chiricahua National Monument born of a volcanic eruption millions of years ago. The miles of trails from beginners to expert make it an appealing “go to place” for hiking enthusiasts. Whether you partake in these pastimes or others such as camping, mountain biking, stargazing, photography, painting, or even simply picnicking, there is something for everyone.
There are a variety of monuments and museums close by including the aforementioned Chiricahua National Monument (22 miles), The Chiricahua Desert Museum just 7 miles up the road, as well as the Geronimo Event Center where anywhere from local events to international conferences and symposiums are held. Further up the road, yet close enough for a day trip are Douglas and Bisbee Arizona, with their own historical curiosities like the Gadsden Hotel, the Copper Queen Hotel, and the Copper Queen Mine. In this tiny town of Portal there are places like the Sky Island Grill with friendly folks, good food, and great picnic basket making choices, and the local Portal Cafe, which has spirits and live music to make for an enjoyable evening out!
Regardless of your preferred activity, artistic endeavors, rest and relaxation, the spending of time savoring good food and wine with family and friends, or especially a romantic repose with someone special, DeVeras is perfectly situated to allow you a variety to choose from on your vacation. And last but not least, as you bid each day adieu, there is a mesmerizing night sky overflowing with an abundance of twinkling stars you never knew existed until now.
