About Alice Despard
Alice and Stuart live in New England and run an Airbnb in their home, and handle caretaking and gardening services in their small village. Alice also teaches yoga and sings in several choral groups, while Stuart is a painter and sculptor. Both enjoy swimming, kayaking and sailing in the beautiful waters surrounding their home.
Alice Despard purchased this Villa in 2018
Why Alice Despard chose Jesús
Costa Rica has appealed to Alice for quite a while and she decided that investing in a property near Atenas with its wonderful climate and people and Central Highlands location close to many of Costa Rica's natural attractions was an appealing proposition. She came to Atenas and fell in love with the locale and this mountaintop villa, and took the plunge! Alice and Stuart hope to visit the villa when they are able and hope their guests enjoy it too, as hosting is something they greatly enjoy.
What makes this Villa unique
Alice and Stuart are new enough to Costa Rica's magnificent mountain vistas that this house at 3,000 ft above the Central Valley held a huge WOW factor for them! They are excited to be one of the first buyers in what will soon be a blossoming community of four homes nestled on the mountain side of Alto del Monte. The quiet majesty of this place and the pure clean air and water from their own well were important factors in selecting this home. Making the interior spaces cozy is important to them, in contrast to the great big sky outdoors. The gardens are beautifully mature and maintained by Elder, the resident gardener, and every sightline from every window and angle around the house is photogenic. They hope to create a balance between the expansive exterior spaces and the warm and serene interior which they feel should embrace its guests in comfort.

Remote Mountain Getaway
The house and location were absolutely fantastic. The pool was broken when we arrived but the property managers had people there that day to fix it. We were here at the beginning of the COVID crisis and therefore spent most of our time at the house "social distancing". We had to cut our trip short to get back into the United States before mandatory quarantine orders went into effect. Unfortunately our entire party wasn't able to join (US military who weren't allowed to leave US), and the owner of this property would not refund the cost of the now-unused Casita or for us having to leave early. Too bad. However, we really enjoyed our stay.
Beautiful home & location
Beautiful home and view! Close to everything. Excellent and available property managers. All paved roads and simple access to and from Atenas and other sites of interest! Highly recommend!!! We’ll be back.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the villa!
Also thank you for mentioning the paved roads as that is not always a given in Costa Rica!! I do hope we can host you again.
A Slice of Heaven
From the moment we pulled past the gate and down the drive, we knew we had chosen the right place. The bedding, closets, and baths were clean and comfortable. The home is very well maintained. Kitchen was well stocked with utensils and basic kitchen needs. The cool night breeze was exceptionally comfortable with windows/doors open and screens to protect from insects. (which were not nearly as bad as expected) The pool was too cool to swim, but honestly, we were too busy to be concerned. The views during the day were amazing!!! Coffee farms with banana, and orange plantings combined with natural forestry were such you could gaze for hours.
Suggestions would be:1) supply more information on local (and I mean in Jesus) restaraunts and bars. We found a fantastic bar for American football less than .3 miles away called Linda Vista owned my a great guy named Dennis. Food and drinks are good as well. 2) More detail on excursions regarding suggestions and options. We thought we were paying for a private tour of the National Park and ended up as part of a group. And that truly is our only two suggestions. Everything else was perfect.
Waze works in Costa Rica and is much better for time estimating than the hand written directions which were rarely the quickest route.
The fauna represents every color known. That said, if you have allergies, bring something for it because there appears to be always something blooming! But the beauty is worth it.
The only small complaint we had was the odor coming from the laundry room. We never could determine what it was. Great trip and we are looking to book it again very soon.
Thanks for your enthusiastic review!
I will address your concerns with Marian and Aad by sending them this review. Thanks for the tip about the local watering hole!
Choose this house
The location, we believe is the best. Not hot and sticky like the beach or Jaco. It was perfect temperature day and night. Close to everything we did and the town of Atenas is sweet. Marion and Aad made our excursions delightful. And make sure you use Guillermo, the chef and Yvonne for food. Guillermo came and cooked a delicious dinner for us and Yvonne made us many yummy prepared meals, so we didn't have to do any cooking.
We would definitely return to this lovely house. Thanks for making our trip go without any glitches, Marion, Aad, Piet and Yvonne.
Stuart and I are pleased to hear how much you enjoyed the perfect temperatures at the villa. We love to return to the mountaintop after our excursions and feel the evening breezes!
Also, how wonderful that you availed yourselves fully of our terrific hospitality team! They will be pleased to hear that you enjoyed their efforts.

Loved this property!
Peaceful and beautiful property with amazing views. Wonderful breezes, well stocked kitchen, and solar heated pool. Our 4th visit to Atenas, so enjoy the area and staying in different locations. Property managers Aad and Marian are exceptional, we know we are in good hands when working with them!
We are honored that you chose our villa for your stay in Atenas and very glad to hear that you enjoy all the same things we enjoy there—the breezes, the pool, the peaceful surroundings!
The Pacific Highlands where the Villa is located is the heartland of Costa Rica with truly awe-inspiring mountain views, the Gulf of Nicoya visible just over the ridge, stunning sunsets, year-around weather in the seventies, historic culture, and some of the warmest people you will ever meet.
Atenas has plenty of grocery stores, and a very good Farmer's Market every Friday. There are numerous good restaurants offering everything from traditional Costa Rica dishes to pizza to steak. The San Jose suburb of Escazu is only 30 minutes away, where you can find nearly every type of restaurant and shopping experience.
Attractions include Manuel Antonio Preserve, Carrera National Park, La Paz Waterfall Park, coffee plantations, rainforests, cloud forests, hot springs, Poaz and Arenal Volcanos, and many more.
Our property managers, Aad & Marian Veltman, a multilingual Dutch couple are ready to welcome you at Villa Alto del Monte and will do everything within their power to make your stay a great success. They can arrange to pick you up at the airport, if you wish, and they offer custom tours and other assistance. They run Bunki Tours and can tailor a tour to meet your exact needs. Their services include car rentals and tours to all corners of the country, including the Poas and Arenal volcanoes, La Paz Waterfall gardens, private Catamaran Sailing tour, a Coffee farm, and tours custom made to our guests' requests throughout Costa Rica.
