Upon entering Pioneer Del Layton's private estate, you will experience spectacular sunsets and one of the most beautiful views of the Florida Bay. Centrally located between Islamorada and Marathon, you are moments from all water activities, parks, museums, shops, restaurants, etc. Cross under Long Key Bridge and you are home to Hemmingway's offshore fishing. Run across the Bay to Flamingo for back country fishing at its finest. Dock your boat at the private 70+ foot dock (boat rentals available), swim in your private circular pool, and cook your catch at the spacious Gazebo. 1 hr. 45 minutes from Miami Intl. Airport, 1 hr. 20 minutes from Key West.
I am the owner's daughter, grandaughter to Del and Mary Layton, and I manage the property for my mother. I grew up in Miami and came to the Keys often as a child with my grandparents, spending many summers here with them. I remember fondly the 'long' drives down on the rough roads and the rattling draw bridges in the back seat of the Chevorlet Impala with Pat, the family dog. After marrying and having two sons, we continued coming down to see my grandparents each chance we could, bringing friends and church groups to enjoy our blessings. Mary and Del were gracious, enjoyed people and were loved by all that knew them. I hope to continue sharing the joy that the Layton House has brought to so many over the years as families and friends build lasting memories.
This property has been passed down from my grandfather, Del Layton, to his daughter, Aileen Howard. He founded this little piece of paradise in the Middle Keys after selling his grocery business in Miami in the late 1940's to follow his dream. You can read the history in his biography, Pioneer in the Florida Keys. The property is very spacious, tranquil and private.
The Layton property is one of the most beautiful in the Florida Keys with views of the Bay, gorgeous changing sunsets, and swaying palm trees from the many windows in the home. The huge kitchen with a large semi-circular bar area is the gathering place for young and old to cook, eat and enjoy each other's company. Pictures displayed around the home recall moments from the past. The large circular fresh-water pool, surrounded with native landscaping, is a fantastic place to unwind and relax before grilling your catch and having dinner in the tiki.
Our family has been going to Layton House for 7 summer vacations. Linda, our landlord, has become a personal friend and she will make sure you have everything you need.
Layton House has plenty of parking room (hard to find in the keys), large dock, fish cleaning tiki hut, sunsets from the kitchen window and outside so you can make your own "wish you were here cards". Inside the home, the totally remodeled kitchen, outside the updated gazebo.
Walk around, grill, sit on the dock and fish, take pictures, swim in the pool, cook up a great family meal, bring your boat, all this on your own private estate. The history about the Layton family is a wonderful story that you become part of during your stay. We are already booked for 2017!
We enjoyed another relaxing vacation at Layton House. The remodeled kitchen is as beautiful inside as the view is outside. New gazebo furniture and grill were put to good use too. Layton house is always very clean and comfortable, Linda is always gracious and accommodating, great cook too! You can't beat the privacy and the view!
Layton House was fantastic! We booked the house for a whole family vacation/get together and could not have been more pleased. The property is everything the pictures show and so much more. Our party ranged in ages from 68 to 4 years old and there was something for everyone. The house was so spacious, clean, and beautifully decorated. The kitchen was totally well equipped for the chefs in our party. The dock and pier were perfect for the fishermen and boaters. There were even toys in the closet for the little ones. Our hostess Linda was extremely friendly, helpful, and accommodating. We loved our stay at Layton House. No one wanted to leave and we all want to come back again.
Seriously. Layton House was amazing and our stay was too brief!
So much better than I even realized from the listing online.
This 5 star review still takes into account that the average temp during our stay was around 50 to 60 degrees during the day and the wind was fierce across the property.
The house was so spacious and accommodating we didn't mind being inside when it was too cold or windy .
Plenty of hangout areas for everyone. Well maintained, pretty much spotless actually. The owner clearly takes great pride in the property. It is beautiful inside and out!
When we did venture out on the property, my three boys enjoyed fishing. My daughter and her friends still managed to get some lounge time in by the pool.
Only a stone's throw to Marathon or Islamorada for a little night life and good eats.
Sunset is spectacular from the house! All the views just absorb and relax you.
This is the place to stay! It feels like you have the Key all to yourself.
Trying to carve out time to book a revisit in late Spring.
I am the girl who cries every time she leaves Disney World . I will tell you I shed tears pulling out of the driveway of Layton House.
Oh Yes! We will back again!
This place is better than the pictures! It is a beautiful property. Spotless. Quiet. We had a couple little issues that were handled immediately. Linda is very responsive and friendly, but not intrusive. The appliances are all new. The pool is clean. The kitchen is huge with any utensil you may need. The grill located under the gazebo is very nice. The only thing that was kind of the pits was the biting bugs. The little no see ums were every where we went outside. This is not a reflection in any way on the Layton House. We had friends staying 15 miles away and they were worse there. Yard Guard helped a lot. This is a wonderful property.
If you are considering renting a house in the Layton area there is absolutely no need to look any further. Ms. Lange keeps this property in amazing shape!! She worked extremely hard to make our stay and overall wedding a complete success!! The location is so gorgeous you'll forget you have to go back to every day life! I loved staying here, and I would recommend this location to anyone looking for a beautiful historical home on the water. Ms. Lange goes above and beyond for everyone and was truly a blessing to have at our wedding! The house was extremely clean and I was very comfortable staying in the home. She was accommodating to any needs we had and willing to go above and beyond to make our stay the best possible. If you're looking for a wedding location for less than 80 people speak to Ms. Lange, because this property left all of our guests in awe of the beauty around us!! Thank you Ms. Lange!!!!!
