About Barbara Fleming

As former B 'n B owners, lovers of Travel and history. Bill, who was formerly a guide in Acadia National Park, passed away in 2013, found this place fascinating and beautiful, a paradise!

Barbara is an accomplished metals and jewelry crafts person, sharing her work by appointment.

We always loved to travel, read, garden and share our knowledge of this magical place.

You will enjoy Barbara's special scones for your first mornings breakfast!

Barbara Fleming purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Barbara Fleming chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

The ARTIST's Cottage, a WEEKLY rental, is located on the 'quiet side' of our island, yet near many of ANP's most popular beaches and trails. We love the ambiance of near seaside living with lobster pounds close by, as well as the charming village life, craft and artists' venues, Sights and sounds of the sea give us great pleasure in living here.

What makes this cottage unique

Use the free island bus (during the season), Convenient and private, our cozy cottage is within walking distance of the water, Great Harbor Marina and beach overlook. So easy and convenient to walk to town for dinner, then stroll back to your cottage, with views of our magnificent harbor! Boats and sea sounds abound, and it's a joy being close to nearby ferry terminals to the outer islands.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"I recently spent a wonderful week alone in the Artist's Cottage and was quite comfortable and very content with my accommodations. Barbara is a delightful hostess who was accessible to answer questions about maps and various attractions. The location of the cottage is really nice for walking a short distance to town for dining or shopping. Since I had several rainy days during my stay, I spent several relaxed hours in my cozy cottage, enjoying a nice quiet, and peaceful place to read a good book, and watch the gentle rain through the numerous cottage windows. I would absolutely recommend this cute place to any couple or single traveler who wants privacy and peace, with the advantage of being able to walk to dinner or shops if desired. I will definitely stay there again!"

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for a week for our honeymoon and absolutely loved it. The location was perfect. We were a minutes walk from downtown Southwest Harbor and enjoyed the local food and shops. The cottage itself was exceptionally clean and accommodating. Barbara and Bill were very welcoming and a joy to do business with. We highly recommend this cottage, and we would love to come back next summer!

The Artist's Cottage was indeed a charming place!

  • 4 of 5

The Artist's Cottage was quaint, neat, and comfortable. Barbara was thoughtful and accommodating with her delicious scones, friendliness and ample information about local attractions.

The location was very favorable! It was 30 minutes or less from the many attractions on Mt. Desert Island and ANP. It was a very short distance from excellent restaurants.

I rated this place 4 of 5 because so few places are perfect. The small bathroom was challenging and wifi service was spotty but these things became trivial in our overall enjoyment.

If we are lucky enough to return to Maine, we would be quite pleased to stay in The Artist's Cottage again and visit with Barbara!

Lovely, quiet place to stay

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I spent four nights in Barbara's cottage in late July, 2015. Barbara was communicative and very welcoming. The cottage is conveniently located, about 1/2 mile south of central Southwest Harbor (the walk is on the shoulder of a relatively busy road) and buffered from the road by the main house. The exterior of the entire property is well-maintained and pleasant, and the interior was very clean.

The cottage consists of two good-sized rooms, one on each floor, and a small bathroom. The bedroom on the second floor is spacious and bright, the bed is comfortable, and there is plenty of storage. There are no window shades. The first floor is arranged into a sitting area, a dining area, and a kitchenette, and has lots of windows a great cross ventilation. We enjoyed it as a place to sit and read, but it is fairly cluttered and awkward to move around in. The kitchen arrangement makes cooking and subsequent clean-up challenging, and we ended up not using the stove for more than making tea. The bathroom is small but adequate, and was well stocked with towels and toilet paper.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay in the Artist's Cottage and interactions with Barbara, and Southwest Harbor.

Owner's Response: It is my pleasure to receive honest and forthright comments on my cortège rental property, and especially when the comments present doable amendment to my original plan. It was, and was and is my intent to represent accurately, in my descrtive notes online, the features thereof. Most folks who stay don't wish to prepare elaborate meals, and knowing that, I used available space in our small cottage to its best advantage, while providing necessary equipment for preparation of small, unelaborate meals. Each season my crew evaluates, and refurnishes to make sure reasonable "comforts of home" await our guests, our newest being the addition of a fine propane grill, just outside, for enjoyment on some of our delightfully starry evenings! We pretend not to be the Taj Mahal, but a clean, comfortably appointed Maine Cottage!

Welcome to the Artist's Cottage in SW Harbor!

  • 5 of 5

The opening description says it all - - "Welcome to the Artist's Cottage in Southwest Harbor!" - - And that is exactly how my husband and I felt from the moment we arrived at this unique, charming cottage for our first trip to SW Harbor. The hosts, Bill and Barbara Fleming, not only made us feel welcome and comfortable immediately, but they also provided excellent information and descriptions of all the many wonderful places to see while visiting the area. The cottage is located in an idyllic seaside village, which is so picturesque and absolutely perfect for a relaxing evening after day-long touring. The cottage itself is the epitome of "Coastal Maine" architecture with it's cedar shingle siding and quaint artist’s decorative touch! We look forward to going back every chance we get and can guarantee you will not be disappointed!

Owner's Response: It was such a pleasure to accommodate these wonderful guests, and it's so special when they let us know they were enjoying our accommodations, as well as the magical island where on we live! We are rewarded when we hear that we've done a good job. It will be a joy to have these special folks back again, and we appreciate their sharing their good comments for our future guests. This summer promises to be another fabulous one, albeit without my wonderful Bill who has passed away. His spirit is still here! This island remains as beautiful and exciting as always, so we welcome you to enjoy the "Magic of Acadia", even stronger than ever!
