This spectacular, prize-winning executive home is on Lake Tahoe's South Shore. To reach the front door, one must enter into a great stone cavern formed by massive granite boulders under a sod roof. The end of the fifty by thirty-five foot living room is formed by a single stone. In the center of this great room lies another boulder and a mossy trout pond. This brings indoors the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, patios, and lawns. Two gigantic fireplaces rise and pass through the room's twenty-three foot ceiling. Overlooking all of this are two sweeping, curved balconies which provide additional views of the mountain peaks and green forests that have made the Tahoe Basin world famous.
'Stonehenge' is a beautiful vacation home built on a rocky ridge overlooking the woods and meadows of Tahoe Valley and the crest of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada. It is located at the edge of the El Dorado National Forest and no house or rooftop, nor street or wire, mar its magnificent view.

Opposite the living room's glass solarium is the dining room, breakfast corner and tiled kitchen. Two gigantic fireplaces rise and pass through the room's 23 foot ceiling. Each bedroom is decorated with a unique and distinctive decor, the Greek Myth room, the Timberline room, Tyrolean, Mediterranean and Wildlife room. The unusual Austrian-styled 'Strube' has its own stucco fireplace and provides a separate hideaway for games or intimate conversation. A library contains books and memorabilia gathered in travels to distant parts of the world.
Mountain climbers who sometimes scale the boulders near 'Stonehenge' acclaim its distinctive setting, intimate and blending with the environment, isolated, yet only five minutes from the center of town, elegantly styled but with a homespun sort of warmth. WEDDINGS, PARTIES, AND OTHER ACTIVITIES ARE NOT ALLOWED. ONLY 14 PEPLES DAY OR NIGHT.
Rosmarie, thank you for your hospitality and creating this beautiful house. We really enjoyed staying here and it made our family weekend that much more enjoyable.
For people looking for more info; 'Stonehenge' is the most memorable vacation house I've ever rented. The house was built on top of natural boulders with a small stream running beneath them. The 5 bedrooms all surround a huge open great room, with two large boulders inside and an enormous fireplace. Small reading nooks, couches, and game rooms surround the boulder in the great room and are perfect getaways to read, play games or just sit and talk. The kitchen was well stocked, not super updated, but worked perfectly. We used both dining tables to fit our group of 12, but it worked well and we could all still talk to each other and mingle.
This house is perfect for a group that is looking for something different than your normal Tahoe cabin. I'd especially recommend for when the weather is nice as the house has a spacious yard with BBQ, Hot Tub, outdoor seating and many more boulders to play on.
Note - I would not recommend this home for families with infants who need to crawl or elderly who have trouble walking. There are lots of stairs, uneven surfaces and places to trip or fall.
This house is quirky and different with a beautiful yard. It's a little outdated and off the beaten path, but a one of a kind location. I read the reviews and thought it was perfect for what I was looking for to have a dinner party with my parents and in laws, as well as a place for my parents to stay.
I spoke with Rosemarie several times asking if I could host a small party here. I was very upfront with the number of guests and my expectations. I am a local in the Tahoe area and live in a popular rental neighborhood so I was super upfront with what I was looking to do. As a local, it was important for me to be honest and respectful to neighbors in the area.
The house was nice enough, but there was lots of cigarette butts outside and some things were broken and in badly in need of updating. The table outside is pretty clunky surrounded by old school chairs that have been very used and weathered. No worries though, the views make up for it. We brought in our own tables and chairs, and had a great little party.
We obliged by the seemingly arbitrary 9pm sound ordinance, and went on with our weekend.
Monday morning I stopped by the house to help my sister in law pack up (she was stuck there trying to do laundry, but the dryer was broken and not drying her clothes) and Rosemarie showed up. She was very very upset, and yelling at my husband that we had moved the patio table. We quickly apologized and moved it back to exactly how she wanted it as well as did a sweep of the house to make sure it was left clean. She kept yelling at us, scaring my niece and nephews, that we had a party and that was against the rules. I explained that she had approved it months prior, and that I had the emails, but she insisted she would "catch" us and keep our deposit.
Even though I provided her with all the emails where she approved the small dinner party, she still kept the deposit. She has since changed her story 3 times as to why she has kept it, ranging from we had "too much garbage" to "too many cars parked in the driveway" to her latest, which is now that the kids "damaged her carpet".
We asked for photos of the damage and she proceeded to send us a contract for the guests the week before us (she also kept their deposit) which made no sense. No photos were ever provided.
The house was pretty but not worth the hassle of Rosemarie. I would not recommend.
The views are spectacular but couldn't understand why "quiet hours" began at 9:00. The premises were very clean and we would recommend this property to friends.
This is by far the best property I have ever stayed at. It is just as pictured and Rosemarie is such a wonderful host. She even called us the morning of our last day just to see how our stay was and to wish us a safe trip home. I would definitely stay at this location again.
This house is amazing, we had a great time! We were a group of 12 people staying in the house, but we also had more family for dinner/ lunch a couple of times. We all loved the house (except for my nephew who was scared of some masks and decorations). I do recommend this house for families, its ok for kids but not for crawlers because it has a lot of stairs and many levels.. In our case in which children are 3 and older it was perfect. It was clean and very well equipped (kitchen utensils, towels, etc..). Besides the house itself, the location of the house and the view from the backyard is outstanding...We loved everything..
This was such a great home for vacation time- all of the art and special details all around this lovely home make for an enjoyable getaway! Please get there sooner than later- it is a jem!!!
Other Activities: Located a short drive from the Lake, Ski Lifts and Casinos. You can also rock climb, view wildlife, cross country and downhill/alpine ski, & snowmobil
