About Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai)
Our extended family is interested in gardening, fishing, photography and music and generally being near the ocean. In our travels, we discovered Kauai is perfect for these activities. Some family members, pictured above, call Kauai home, others of us visit as often as we can. Hale Kokio is a family owned property. Our community is welcoming, lifestyle is simple and the beauty of the island abundant. What more can we ask for?walks on the beach, cultivating our gardens, sharing harvests with friends, music by the fire, preparing meals of fresh fish and local produce.
Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) chose Kilauea
We visited Kauai a number of times before our decision to purchase Hale Kokio in 2006. The property was in the perfect location, showcased the natural beauty of the North Shore in a neighborhood that was developing in authentic island style. The grounds were so pretty and the design was perfect for additional planting and cultivation. We all decided that this was just the right place for us.

Tropical Paradise 🌴
Aloha! When we arrived we were amazed at the beauty of this property! Beautiful flowering trees, palm trees, coconut trees, and more. The house is very clean and quaint, with a lovely patio that we enjoyed each morning with coffee, as we listen and watched exotic birds, along with the roosters & chickens that you see everywhere on the island. We also relaxed in the jacuzzi every night.
The house is in a great location between Kapaa and Hanalei.
Our favorite beach was “Rock Quarry”, because it was quite, beautiful and close by.
The owners were very helpful with any questions we had during our stay.
We had a wonderful time, and we will definitely come again! 🌺
Property as described with a few extra visitors!
This was our 5th time visiting Kauai. We usually stay in a VRBO Condo but thought that we would try this cottage for a different experience. Eleanor and Rob were extremely helpful and communicative. I had been sick with pneumonia prior to the trip and Eleanor ordered extra pillows for the cottage so I could prop myself up when I slept so I wouldn't cough. She was very sweet!! The check-in was easy and the cottage was just as described. The location was awesome since we love to go to Larsen's beach.
The only thing that I want to mention (and was surprised that no one else had) was the amount of geckos inside the cottage. When you think Hawaii you know that you are going to see geckos but in all of our prior stays we never had any inside the property. At last count I had 25 that we had come across inside the cottage (in our hanging bath towels, the kitchen sink, couch, rafters, the floor and walls). For someone like me that is terrified of reptiles this was extremely disturbing. They also chirp loudly to find each other and during the night this is extremely annoying! It looks like a lot of them come in from the loft area where there are levered windows without screens. It would probably be a good idea for those windows to be sealed. But if reptiles don't bother you then you would be good to go.
We also had quite the problem with ants, cockroaches and crickets inside the cottage. Rob did come address this with traps quickly which we appreciated but it was just unsettling. The guest before us apparently had been quite messy and left the doors/windows open.
One other thing to note, if you are use to sleeping with blackout or dark curtains make sure to bring a sleep mask. There are a ton of windows which is beautiful but in the morning can be very bright I noticed this in the pictures and brought a mask. Just a tip :)
We take all reviews seriously and appreciate feedback. As you may have guessed, I followed up. We want our guests to have a great stay at Hale Kokio. With a complete information during the stay, we are likely able to do something about even this isolated geiko situation. The email you sent directly to me gave me no idea that there were so many geikos around.Rob did check in a few times also.
( Other recent guests did not have this problem, I have asked to try to determine the cause). And yes geikos have been on the lanai and a very occasional one inside.
I will check with guests for the next few weeks. Thanks for the heads up, even if a little to late to have helped you.
Perfection with magical Hale Kokio
Thank you for a wonderful stay in your cottage. Quaint, cozy, quiet, and private - exactly what we were looking for. Our neighbors were chickens, frogs, cats, and dogs. Great location for exploring the North Shore.
Slice of Heaven in Paradise
This little cottage is a special retreat; quiet and peaceful and private.
It is very well maintained, well-stocked and convenient to all things on the North Shore. It has everything you need for a trip to the beach, or a barbecue or a nice rest on the lanai.
We loved our stay here! Hopefully, we will get to return soon.
We highly recommend this slice of heaven in Paradise.
Return guests to Hale Kokio are always welcome. There is so much to do on Kauai and as mentioned getting around the island from Hale Kokio is easy. We consistently add new features to Hale Kokio, for example airconditioning and lounge chairs in the garden. The Town of Kilauea offers lots to do, even weekly music shows and fire dancing performances. We are happy to provide beach supplies to add to the convenience of 3 beaches being within a 5 minute drive. Our great guests add to the spirit of Aloha at Hale Kokio. Mahalo
Wonderful Kauai North Shore
Hale Kokio is located in a park-like setting, surrounded by tropical greenery, expansive lawns and with trees of all kinds on the property, including papaya, lychee and macadamia. Kaua'i was the third island we visited on our vacation, and we found the climate there to be a little cooler than on the other islands. Trade winds blew through the house so, except for one day, the air conditioner went unused. The three families of wild chickens that visit the property regularly kept us amused. The large lanai was a ideal place for morning coffee and evening meals.
We had the pleasure of meeting Rob, one of the owners of Hale Kokio, and he provided us with helpful information about the local farmers' market and some other areas of interest that we would have otherwise missed.
We're already contemplating a return to Hawaii in the future. Because we fell in love with the north shore of Kaua'i, Hale Kokio would be our destination.
We are always happy to help our guests with suggestions for places to visit on Kauai. There is just so much to choose from. Check our blogs and facebook page at Hale Kokio for news and great photos to help you get to know the island. And for our past guests, just check to keep your eye on what is happening in Kilauea and other spots on the North Shore. Be sure to check out the new Kauai North Shore Shuttle for transportation and tickets for Ke'e, the Napali Park and Tunnels Beach!
Romance Found in Island Retreat
We truly enjoyed our stay at this charming little country cottage.
We had all the comforts of home, as well as a beautiful back yard to relax and enjoy.
This area of the island has lots to do, and many places to explore.
We will certainly be back to Hale Kokio to pick where we left off.
A perfect match. Energy and a sense of adventure on the island of Kauai. Great to hear that you fully enjoyed the amentites and charm of Hale Kokio, the cottage and the grounds. We look forward to your return stay.
