About Gloria Woerheide

I am a computer software consultant. This house was my primary residence when I moved to the New London area from Chicago. I love the area and would not have moved out, except that I bought a larger house to turn into a bed and breakfast inn.

Gloria Woerheide purchased this house in 1996

Why Gloria Woerheide chose New London

Originally I came to the area for work and to live by the water. As time passed, I became more and more aware of all of the interesting things to do in the area. As the casinos grew, they brought in more and more first class entertainers and live sporting events. Being from Chicago I am accustomed to having many entertainment choices. In an area like New London County, you wouldn't think you would find the same level of entertainment, but because of the casinos you do.

I count myself lucky to have found this place. So much so, that I plan to retire here one day.

What makes this house unique

We have 6 bedrooms on 3 floors. Older children and teens love our third floor because it has a couch/futon,TV with cassette player, and cartoon and movie tapes, and can be closed off from the rest of the house. Some have referred to it as their fort because of the vaulted ceiling.

The backyard is fenced, which is great if you have small children or dogs. On the first floor, our miniature dachshunds used to love chasing each other from the living room, through the kitchen, to the dining room and sitting area, and back to the living room without stopping.

We have bookshelves with board games, several versions of Trivia, a few children's books, a few novels, and lots of magazines. If you take a paperback book or magazine, we ask that you leave one for others to read. If you have magazines or paperbacks you are finished with, you can leave them with us for others to enjoy. We could also use some more children's books, board games, and VCR or DVD movies suitable for children.

We sometimes live in the house in the winter months so our kitchen is fully equipped.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We arrived two weeks ago – the grandparents from Newton, Ma and the rest of us from New York, NY. Grandma Bev had spent summers in Neptune Park through her childhood. She has been in heaven. The kids, Dean and Hal have had a blast. We lived at the beach and on the front porch. Could not have asked for better weather no rain at all until the very last day.

We made ourselves right at home in the house, which is great for a big family clan. We love the porch best of all. It has been a wonderful two weeks. We hope to return next summer.

Ocean Beach Park,1.5 blocks away, has a casual restaurant and bar where you can have a snack and a drink on their waterfront deck. They also have a few kiddie rides, swings, spray park, water slide, video game room, a boardwalk and a small 1940s miniature golf area as well as the beach and a nature area. It's a great place to take the family. Captain Scott's is a 5 minute drive away. You can enjoy lobster and fish dinners there at picnic tables that sit right on a small cove. The Eugene O'Neill Theater is located behind Ocean Beach. They have live theater there in the summer. Harkness Park, located near the Eugene O'Neill Theater, is an old waterfront mansion. In the summer they hold live outside concerts with name talent. Fort Trumbull - In 1781 Benedict Arnold led the British to New London where they captured the fort and sacked the city. The fort & cannons are available for viewing. No smoking in the house Cleaning: We expect guests to clean before they leave.

Convenient, large house

  • 5 of 5

The house is well sized and great for a big group, while still having a lot of separate rooms for couples, etc. We had 10 people staying there comfortably. The location is convenient - close to the beaches and also to the cute old town of Mystic. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants near the house. Would recommend for big groups.

Just what we were looking for!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had an awesome time staying at Gloria's place for a long weekend in the beginning of June. Gloria's place was quite spacious, had ample parking, was close to the beach, and was family friendly (lots of board games/kids toys, fenced in back yard, etc). Gloria was very easy to work with and always responded to my email questions in a very timely manner. We will absolutely be renting again in the near future! Thank you for such a great vacation Gloria:)

Thank-you, Gloria, for the opportunity to rent your lovely, vintage home at the beginning of October to attend a family wedding at the nearby Eugene O'Neill Theatre Campus. Everything was spic and span. The layout and furnishing of your rooms was perfect for our large group from Ireland. There were pretty table-linens and dishes for the rehearsal-dinner, stacks of extra, guest- towels in the bathrooms and the full-length mirror was much appreciated on The Big Day! Kitchen and laundry-room were fully equiped. Wi-fi and TV kept us in contact with work and news. The neighbours were nice and the locality is tranquil. The private beach is a few minutes walk away. We look forward to coming back soon!
