About Dennis Stein
Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I've called Ithaca and the bountiful Finger Lakes region home for the last 25 years. Living in downtown Ithaca, I greatly enjoy the contrast between the vibrant urban downtown and the peaceful, wide-open vistas around the lakes. My co-owner Ed, also a transplant who takes inspiration from the natural beauty of the Finger Lakes region, has lived in downtown Ithaca with his family even longer.
Dennis Stein purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Dennis Stein chose Trumansburg
Twin Pines is a cozy cottage that guests regularly describe as very welcoming. When the cottage went on the market in 2006, the seller shared that because of the sheer beauty of the view, several potential out-of-area buyers expressed plans to tear down the cottage and replace it with a much larger contemporary house. We decided to buy the building so that its simple beauty and great view of the lake could be preserved and enjoyed by vacationers and guests.
What makes this Cottage unique
Twin Pines is replete with original artistic details. Some of the furnishings are handmade, and the front door was crafted by Mary Shelley, a local woodworking artist in Ithaca. We feature the work of other local artists.

The Great Escape
Out trip was end of Oct 2019: If you are looking for nostalgia with all the modern creature comforts, then come to Twin Pines... quaint and quiet with brilliant Fall colors that surround the cottage and sparkle back at you from across the lake. The cottage is the only one on the top level of this area of the bluff overlooking the lake and you drive down a curvy densely treed road right to it (no stairs to navigate to unload your stuff). The lot is situated as to have total privacy in front, back and on both sides- no immediate neighbors/secluded feel. The cottage has a woodsy feel that is artistic in nature with wooden beam ceilings, a handcrafted door, natural bark door trim, gleaming wood floors, all accented by beautiful "feel good" artwork. There is good task lighting and accent lights in the evening for that cozy feel. Other mentions: fully equipped kitchen (all you will need); drinking water dispenser; comfy beds with soft sheets and blankets/comforters; excellent baseboard heat; books-games-cards-puzzles (bring dvd's), 2 canoes/row boat/life jackets; bonfire pit; charcoal grill; a deck with a killer view of the lake and another outside deck facing the lake; a "cabana" on the lake level with a small fridge ; lighted stairs down to lake level and plenty of brochures of area attractions. During our three day stay we went to Watkins Glen and Robert Treman State Park and hiked the most gorgeous gorges (rather intense at times so not for the faint of heart and body) visited many wineries right down the road on Route 89, went to the Lively Run Dairy and fell in love with the cutest goats just running around, and on our way home drove through the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and communed with more nature (yet we still had a lot of time to just relax and "take in" the cottage. The "biggest asset" though I think is that you have two gracious owners/ hosts who obviously take pride in their place, and who think of your comfort and ensure that you are well taken care of.... Thank you so much Dennis and Ed... this was the Great Escape that we needed.
Great little Cabin
We had a great time staying at the property. Hosts were very responsive and made everything easy. Right off the lake with great views!

Beautiful place to get away.
Had a wonderful trip and enjoyed my stay. The lake front view was beautiful and the owners amazing and friendly.
Great weekend !
We had a fun and relaxing weekend visiting with our daughter . The communication with the property owners was great, the cottage was clean and the views were beautiful! The cottage had everything we needed including a grill, canoes and a camp fire pit . It was located 25 minutes from Ithaca College and the directions were easy to follow. We will definitely stay here again !
Relaxation in a beautiful setting
After a particularly busy year, our family (two adults and two kids, 13 and 11) wanted nothing more than a peaceful week of swimming, kayaking, and reading. After a blind Google search, we stumbled upon Twin Pines and took a chance on it, before even realizing that it was located in the Finger Lakes. The cottage was perfect for our needs, the lake provided unlimited and private swimming, and the surrounding area’s gorges, restaurants, and shops were a delight we hadn’t expected. (We especially recommend Maxie’s Supper House for dinner and the artist’s co-op “Handwork” in Ithaca for unique treasures!) As we weren’t used to renting a private residence, we were relieved at how approachable, friendly, and responsive were Dennis and Ed. They made us feel like family from our very first contact. Dennis and Ed go beyond expectations to provide everything you might need for an enjoyable stay: wood for a lakeside fire, copious pots, pans, utensils, and spices for cooking, as well as a canoe, rowboat, and the necessary paddles and life vests. They even provide tailored recommendations—such as suggesting Cayuga Lake Creamery, an ice cream place we’d never have discovered on our own that we all enjoyed immensely. The entire experience was so very enjoyable that on just the second day of our seven day trip, our kids and my husband agreed that we’d definitely return next year. We can’t thank Dennis and Ed enough for making our vacation more than we could’ve ever hoped for.
