About Dennis Stein

Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I've called Ithaca and the bountiful Finger Lakes region home for the last 25 years. Living in downtown Ithaca, I greatly enjoy the contrast between the vibrant urban downtown and the peaceful, wide-open vistas around the lakes. My co-owner Ed, also a transplant who takes inspiration from the natural beauty of the Finger Lakes region, has lived in downtown Ithaca with his family even longer.

Dennis Stein purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Dennis Stein chose Cayuga Lake

Twin Pines is a cozy cottage that guests regularly describe as very welcoming.

When the cottage went on the market in 2006, the seller shared that because of the sheer beauty of the view, several potential out-of-area buyers expressed plans to tear down the cottage and replace it with a much larger contemporary house.

We decided to buy the building so that its simple beauty and great view of the lake could be preserved and enjoyed by vacationers and guests.

What makes this cottage unique

Twin Pines is replete with original artistic details. Some of the furnishings are handmade, and the front door was crafted by Mary Shelley, a local woodworking artist in Ithaca. We feature the work of other local artists.

Twin Pines offers a number of unique features. Topping the list is that the cottage is directly on Cayuga Lake, which means you can jump into the water off the dock and swim--or, sit on the Twin Pines' deck and relax while enjoying the beautiful view. While very private, the cottage is just 2 miles away from a large supermarket, a great coffee shop and fine restaurants in Trumansburg, NY, 2 miles from the start of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail and near such attractions as the Cayuga Creamery ice cream shop and the Amish Country market. Twin Pine's guests are only 20 minutes away from Wegmans in Ithaca, the region's premiere supermarket, and fine downtown Ithaca restaurants. Nearby must-sees in the area include the Ithaca Farmer's Market, the various specialty shops on the Ithaca Commons, Cornell University, Museum of the Earth, the Sciencenter and the many spectacular waterfalls, gorges and trails that abound in the Ithaca area.

Cozy cottage with beautiful views of Cayuga Lake

  • 5 of 5

Twin Pines was absolutely perfect for our mid-September long weekend getaway. We had easy, clear communication with Ed and Dennis ahead of time, and Dennis was there to greet us and answer any of our questions when we arrived. The house was clean and in order, and well stocked with everything we needed for the weekend. The furniture was comfortable and the appliances were all pretty new, and overall the house was very charming and cozy. You can’t beat the location right on the lake – we really enjoyed mornings and evenings on the front porch and the deck. We also enjoyed being within a half hour’s drive of all the nearby places we wanted to visit: Ithaca, Trumansburg, Watkins Glen, and dozens of different wineries. It was also so nice that we were able to bring our dog along – he had a blast. We had a great time here and can’t wait to come back!

The perfect lake cottage

  • 5 of 5

Twin Pines is the best place we’ve stayed on Cayuga—the perfect balance of charm and function. The owners have thought of everything to insure a comfortable stay. The cottage is beautifully situated with gorgeous views from both floors. You never feel far from the lake. The beach is terrific. Plenty of sun, but lots of nice shady spots as well. Great for beach fires and star gazing at night. It is a short drive to Trumansburg for groceries and some really nice restaurants. It's also close to Taughannock Park with its spectacular gorge. We could not have asked for more.

Fantastic views, lots of space and privacy

  • 5 of 5

This home, situated right on Lake Cayuga, is wonderfully situated: a few minutes from Ithaca, right near Taughannock State park and Trumansburg, and a short ride to Lake Seneca. The home itself is lovely. The way it's configured, a couple can sleep in the upstairs room that's overlooking the lake, while a couple of kids can sleep in the adjoining bedroom. Everyone shares the single bathroom, upstairs. Downstairs, there are lovely spaces to eat and lounge, featuring the deck over the lake. There are about 60 steps down to a little private beach. At this part of the lake, it's nice and quiet.

Overall, we highly recommend Twin Pines for a relaxing lake experience.

Like visiting mom

  • 5 of 5

So as my daughter and I walked in with a friend from college I heard behind me mom this is perfect...and it was. The views are great, the place well stocked, there's a cozy family feel to this cottage home. We invited 10 college friends to cook a meal together and everyone was so happy to get away from dorm life to a home cooked meal, board games, and time to sit on a couch with a friend. I am so happy I booked a home for my visit instead of a hotel. Thanks guys it was perfect!

Great Peaceful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there this summer and it is such a relaxing place. You have full kitchen amenities plus a weber grill if you like to cook, which we do. The vista view from the deck--which can seat ten--overlooks the lake and is great for bird watching. The owners are accommodating and kind, providing extra towels or directions to a site nearby. Hiking nearby, and wineries too. And you have your own dock and lake front to hang out on, swim and relax. Plenty of privacy too, if you want to stay in and read or relax.

I recently stayed at this property for 4 nights with my girlfriend. We were trilled with this cottage. It is perfectly nestled in the woods, right on the lake, atop a bluff. This provide great privacy and amazing views for total relaxation. Also, the owners are great people and really easy to work with. They were very helpful and timely with all inquires. I would highly recommend this place to anyone!
