A teacher and archaeologist by background, Cathy is a designer, decorator and photographer. She and her English husband George have designed and built over 100 websites, produced and published books and CD's and numerous other media related items.

George is a boatbuilder and yacht architect as well as a skilled carpenter and woodworker. Together Cathy and George have lovingly restored, renovated and furnished the grand 1862 Sea Captain's House to make two elegant apartments

Catherine Shaer or George Whisstock purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Catherine Shaer or George Whisstock chose MidCoast and Penobscot Bay

Although it was in rather a sad state, we fell in love with the house at first sight, and couldn't resist the lure of restoring this gracious historic old sea-captain's house to it's earlier glory.

What makes this apartment unique

In touch with the harbor and all that goes on there. A short walk to the nearest supermarket. And very close to the downtown.

Cozy, clean and well located

  • 4 of 5

We only had a night here and arrived somewhat late in the evening, but the apartment was just as described and was the perfect place for us to access points of interest in Rockland. The house is old but quaint and well cared for, with plenty of modern updates. Breakfast at the Home Kitchen Cafe was tasty, the Farnsworth Museum and Wyeth Center is a must-see, and we had a brief stop at the Rockland Breakwater as well -- all 3 locations within 1-2 miles of the house. Cathy was very helpful and stopped by for a friendly visit to welcome us.

Maine experince

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here end of May, me my wife and 2 boys. We had a wondeful time. We live in the Caribbean and went to experience Maine. In this house we really felt like Maine. It was well equipped had a lot of character and we just plain loved it. Would recommend it to anyone going to that area. Great base for exploring that part of the coast. I hope to get back to that area someday and would not hesitate to stay here again.

A friend and I spent 2 outstanding days ar this enchanting retreat, well-situated for viewing the treasures of Maine's mid-coast. From the cordial welcome by the owner, Cathy, to our stay in the well-appointed and comfortable apartment, every moment was perfect. The apartment is fully furnished with every need of the guest anticipated and answered. It is every bit as lovely and inviting as the pictures indicate. Attractions abound in Rockland and the nearby towns. We were thrilled to visit the magnificent Farnsworth Museum and Wyeth Center, fascinated by our stops at Good Karma Farm in Belfast and the Swans Island studio in Northport - and spellbound by both the magical land/seascape and the picturesque villages through which we traveled. A beautiful memory!

This place exceeded our expectations

  • 5 of 5

We knew from all the positive reviews that this apartment was well-appointed, cozy and spacious. We learned firsthand that is also has character. Everything has been lovingly restored by the owners. And they made us feel right at home. Being based in Rockland turned out to be an excellent choice, as well. Rockland has a great vibe --- a downtown strip that blends in with the working harbor, a great variety of cafes, restaurants, galleries and shops. Our favorite restaurant was Lily Bistro. From Rockland it is east to reach and explore the many wonders of Penobscot Bay and its charming coastal towns. We plan to go back and spend more time here next year.

Rockland is an exciting small city full of restaurants, pubs, wine bars, art galleries, renowned museums, and shops of all descriptions, at the same time retaining its historical ambiance. A concert hall and a restored 1920's movie theater complete the downtown.

The grand natural harbor, with its exceptional breakwater and lighthouse, is dotted with pleasure yachts and sailboats and the largest windjammer fleet in the world. Yet Rockland still has a working harbor with a commerical fishing and lobster boat fleet. A State Ferry operates daily to the off-shore islands. Rockland is called “The Lobster Capital Of the World”, and 'The Gateway to Penobscot Bay.'

Walk out on the breakwater (⅞ mile) to the lighthouse at the end – great views over the harbor and out over the ocean to the outlying islands. Or take a walk on the harbor boardwalk and explore the activity in a real working harbor.

There are two excellent golf courses nearby – Rockland Public course and Samoset.

As well as the famous Lobster festival there are many others during the year – a Boat Show, Blues Festival, Jazz festival to name a few. And several regional fairs – Common Ground Fair, Union Fair and Windsor Fair being among the most popular.

There are working vineyards, farms and farmers markets to visit and many cultural and artisanal activities to see or take part in.

There’s no place like Penobscot Bay for walking and exploring, fishing, sailing, kayaking, hiking and rock climbing. And in the evenings in Rockland, rejoin society, and eat out, go to a concert or a film.

Rockland has something to offer everybody, young and old. Come and stay at the Zadoc F Brewster House and see for yourself!
