About James Sane
I was born and raised in western North Carolina. Sylvia and I have lived in Gerton for the past eighteen years. We purchased our house here in 1996. We moved here in 2000 to live full-time. I have extensive family roots to this area. Gerton is named after my Great-Great Aunt, Gertrude Freeman. I retired from the Army in 1995. I spent my first eight years in the Airborne Infantry. I Became an Army Aviator in 1981. I flew helicopters until I retired in 1995. I flew a CH-47 Chinook helicopter in Desert Storm in 1991-1992. I've been a member of the Gerton Fire and Rescue Department for the past eighteen years. Sylvia and I have been married for thirty-eight years. That's 266 years in dog years. Whatever. Sylvia is a Georgia girl.

Why James Sane chose Gerton
I was raised 21 miles down the road from Gerton. We would come to Gerton for visits when I was growing up. I always wanted to live in Gerton. Now I do.
What makes this Cottage unique
I loved this property for many reasons. I can stand on my deck and view Bearwallow Mountain. Yes, bears do wallow there. It's just the most peaceful place to live. Great neighbors. And my cousin lived across the horse pasture from this house. The house that is Stone Cottage.

I can not say enough about the Stone Cottage. So warm and welcoming. The views are amazing. The home itself is perfect. It is stocked with everything you need and a lot extra. Jim and Sylvia go above and beyond as owners of this property. They are also amazing people, as we had the pleasure to meet them and chat for a while. We saw deer, wild turkeys, squirrels in the yard. It was amazing. Mostly , it was the perfect spot to unwind and spend time together with family.
It was a great place. Centrally located to all areas we wanted to see. Very peaceful. Accommodations were great. Everything we needed to prepare leisurely breakfasts. We marveled how quiet it was. Great VRBO. Thank you for your great North Carolina hospitality.
Near hiking trailheads and fishing spots
This was a great place for my husband to search out fishing spots while I stayed to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Jim is a very gracious host.
Peaceful and secluded
I had never used vrbo and was very skeptical, however I was sent the lockbox key code a few days before our arrival for easy check in. We were a little late arriving but the next morning as we were leaving to sight see we were able to meet Mr. Jim who offered to take us down to a stable to let our children see the horses. We contacted him later that afternoon and went. Our children were ecstatic!! The owners went above and beyond to make sure we had everything that we would need. It was just like being at home. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to come back again. We highly recommend this place for others. Any questions we had were quickly answered via email before our stay. You couldn’t ask for a more hospitable place and ownership. We even saw a turkey walk right by the front door this am. Perfect for people who love country life. And we do!!

This exceeded our expectations. All the little extras were most appreciated. The bed is comfortable, and kitchen well stocked. Very restful and beautiful get away!
Very nice well kept little cottage.
My visit was for a wedding, I wanted to be away from everyone and that's exactly what I was able to enjoy.
The owners were very respectful of my desire for privacy. Before they came onto the property they informed me. The only time they were on the site was to put out some food for the local fauna, of which I was able to enjoy both deer and turkey.
Overall I enjoyed my stay and would recommend to others.
