Only minutes away from world-class speckled trout fishing waters, our 3-bedroom vacation home is located on the Apalachee Bay in Shell Point, Florida (30 miles south of Tallahassee). This 1492 sq. ft. modular home is located in gated Paradise Village of Shell Point, with a community swimming pool and tennis court, and a public beach within walking distance. Right out our back door is a boat dock located on a deep-water canal, which is just one canal over from the boat launch. The living quarters feature 3 bedrooms, 2 baths (master has a Jacuzzi tub and separate shower), family room, laundry room, fully equipped kitchen and screened-in porch. The family room is a large, open area furnished with a fully stocked entertainment center (42' TV, VCR, DVD, 300 Disc CD), comfortable den furniture, pool table and bar area. The dining area is surrounded by sliding glass doors and windows, offering a beautiful view of the canal. Kick back on the screened-in porch and enjoy our laid back paradise!

Fishing: For the fisherman, the fishing is as good as it gets and there is an assortment of USCG licensed captains that will be more than willing to book a charter and take you out into the bay for a fishing experience that you will never forget. We have year round fishing, with different species here at different times. Trout and redfish are the most sought after fish and can be caught all year long. Tarpon are here from June till August, and cobia will show up in the early spring as the water warms and will stay until fall. Other fish that may be caught on the flats are Spanish Mackerel, blue fish, sheepshead, flounder, ladyfish and a numerous variety of sharks to 250 pounds. Many prefer to head out for deeper waters to catch grouper and snapper.

Golf: For the golfer, Wildwood Country Club is a beautiful public golf course located on Hwy. 98 in Medart (less than 10 minute drive). Telephone 850-926-4653

Tennis: For the tennis buff, there are 6 lighted tennis courts across the street from the golf course at Wakulla High School on Hwy. 98 in Medart. Paradise Village also has a tennis court.

Biking: Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail stretches about 20.5 miles from Tallahassee south to St. Marks. Longleaf pine and forests of oak, wax myrtle and yaupon holly nicely shade the route. The trail is wide and smooth, with occasional restrooms and benches along the rural stretches.

Hiking: There are many nature trails to choose from, along with some paved trails. St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and all of the state parks have hiking trails. Be sure to take bug spray, unless you are hiking in the wintertime. Nearby state parks include Wakulla Springs, Bald Point, San Marcos de Apalache, and Ochlockonee River.

Birding & Wildlife: If you have come looking for the call of the wild, then you come to the right place. With vast acres of undeveloped lands and protected wildlife sanctuaries, our natural areas support an unbelievable abundance of wildlife with verified counts of over 300 species of migratory and nesting birds; 52 species of mammals such as the West Indian manatee and Florida black bear; 40 species of amphibians, and 65 species of reptiles.

Windsurfing: Shell Point is also great place for windsurfing and hosts several Regattas each year.

Restaurants: For those who enjoy great seafood, Angelo's in Panacea (20 minutes away) is one of the finest renowned seafood restaurants anywhere - located right on the water. Nearby Spring Creek Restaurant (less than 10 minutes away) also boasts delicious seafood, including soft shell crab, along with a casual down-home atmosphere. Mad Anthony’s Waterfront Grille located on Dickerson Bay at the Rock Landing Marina in Panacea, FL offers some unique seafood dishes, craft beers, with tiki bar dining by the bay. Riverside Café in St. Marks and Ouzts Too in Newport have great food and often have weekend live entertainment. There are many other wonderful restaurants in our area. If you decide to rent with us, we will send you a list of all of the nearby restaurants, along with our personal rating on each one.

Wakulla Springs (10 miles away): Wakulla Springs State Park, one of the largest fresh water springs in the world, is only 10 minutes away. Wakulla Springs was the site for filming the early Tarzan movies, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Airport 77. From the river boat and glass bottom boat tours, you can see alligators, many species of water fowl, fish, turtles, snakes, and deer, in and among the crystal clear waters emerging from the depth of the springs. They also have a swimming area, with a diving platform. Kids love it and you will, too. The water stays the same temperature all year round. It's very refreshing in the heat of the summertime.

Lighthouses & St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge: The St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge (15 minutes away), which features the St. Marks Lighthouse, offers a habitat for all kinds of Florida wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles. There are 3 other lighthouses along our Forgotten Coast --- Crooked River Lighthouse in Carrabelle, St. George Island Lighthouse on St. George Island and Cape San Blas Lighthouse in Port St. Joe.

Beaches: For the beach enthusiast, nearby beaches include St. Joseph's Peninsula State Park and St. George's Island, which are regularly voted into the top ten beaches in the world (an hour to an hour and a half drive). Shell Point Beach is about 1/2 block from Dock of the Bay. It is a very, very small beach located on the bay, which means that the only waves that you will see will be on a very windy day. It doesn't compare to the other two beaches mentioned earlier, but it is very convenient and a great place to kick back and enjoy the abundant wildlife in and surrounding the bay, along with breathtaking sunsets. Other nearby beaches include Mashes Sands Beach (which has a fishing pier), Alligator Point Beach (25 miles) and Carrabelle Beach (40 miles).

Gulf Specimen Marine Lab: For a close-up, hands-on examination of marine life, check out Gulf Specimen Marine Lab in Panacea, which is 20 minutes away.

Tallahassee Museum: The Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science is about 30 minutes away, and offers a look at Florida’s wildlife in a natural setting.

Maclay Gardens: Maclay Gardens is located on Thomasville Road in Tallahassee (40 miles away). A masterpiece of floral architecture, the gardens feature a picturesque brick walkway, a secret garden, a reflection pool, a walled garden and hundreds of camellias and azaleas.

Tallahassee & Shopping: Only 30 minutes from Shell Point, Tallahassee has all of the conveniences of a big city – malls restaurants, museums, parks, airport – and is well known for being the home of Florida State University (FSU) and Florida A&M University (FAMU). Other, more unique shopping can be found at Apalachicola, which is about an hour drive.

Why Deborah Word chose Florida Panhandle

My name is Deborah Word. My husband, Jerry, and I started visiting Shell Point in 1998. It didn't take long for us to fall in love with the Shell Point area. Since then, we purchased two canal front vacation rental homes in Paradise Village of Shell Point, with high hopes for future retirement there. We love fishing and photography, so Wakulla County is perfect for us. Several years later, I started handling vacation rental reservations for a few other property owners in the surrounding area. I currently manage five rentals in Shell Point, two in Ochlockonee Bay (Panacea) and one in Alligator Point.

What makes this mobile home unique

We love having the boat dock just out our back door, so that we can be on the bay fishing in just minutes. Dock of the Bay is also very close to Shell Point Beach and close to the community pool. Easy walk to either.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Stayed at "Dock of the Bay" for four nights in October. Our first stay. Found the property to be very clean, well organized and stocked with everything needed. Also had a great time fishing which is why we chose this location. You step out the back yard and board our boat. On fishing waters in 10 minutes time. That cannot be improved upon. Also have made reservations for mid November. (Review shared from Guest Reviews on “Deb’s Forgotten Coast Rentals” Facebook page)

Nice location, large house, but not very clean

  • 3 of 5

We had a very mixed experience at Dock of the Bay. We loved Shell Point and the canal to the house is very easy to get in and out of. But there were some definite cons.

Pros:

- really great location and a pretty canal, which you can easily navigate out to the Gulf

- large house, lots of space

- easily park the boat trailer in front of the house on the grass

- near the public beach

- view of the pretty canal from the table in the kitchen (only room with a view)

- laundry facilities

- carport for 1 vehicle

- pool on the property

Cons:

- The kitchen was pretty dirty. When we walked in, I could smell old fish. It seemed to be emanating from the stove. The coffee maker was completely unusable - there were moldy crumbs in the top, and the heating element was so rusted and caked with filth. I actually removed the filter and the carafe and ended up pouring water from the kettle into the filter basket, trying not to scold myself or spill coffee all over the counter. I also needed to wash a lot of the dishes - especially anything from the lower cupboards and drawers (pots, pans, spatulas, etc.) The cups, mugs and plates were not too bad.

- The place in general feels old and dirty, especially the couch and pool table.

Overall, we give it 3 stars - an Average rating - because it definitely has some pros but also some cons - we weren't expecting a 5-star resort or anything, but we were hoping for a clean place where we could relax without doing cleaning.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking your time to review Dock of the Bay. I appreciate your information about the condition of the coffee pot, which has already been replaced. I understand the comment about dishes in the lower cabinets, which are seldom used, that may have needed rinsing out. However, our family stayed there just a couple of weeks afterward, and did not experience any dirty dishes. We take great pride in our 2 vacation rentals and strive to keep the furnishings, bedding and linens updated, along with a fully stocked kitchen. We have never received a 3-star rating (or less) at either place. In fact, most of our ratings have been 5-star. My experience has been that the cleaning service does a great job, which is not only something that I have noticed, but many guests have commented on how clean everything is. Although the Flexsteel queen sleeper sofa is a few years old, it is in no way “dirty”. The same goes for the pool table. In addition, I am a little surprised by this “average” rating, since the NAMED GUESTS on the contract for THIS rental wrote in our personal Guest Register that the house was “wonderful”. Go figure.

Comfortable, clean absolutely perfect! Thank you!

  • 5 of 5

Amazing place. Comfy beds. Super clean! Everything is there for you but more than that it is very pretty. Decorated nicely. Loads to do with the kids (pool table, board games etc) Husband loved having his boat right at the dock with a hose to rinse everything down after fishing. Beautiful views of sunsets etc. Enjoyed the screened porch in the evenings. Perfect place to chill and relax! We will definitely stay here again!!!

dock of the bay experience

  • 5 of 5

rental was very comfortable for our family of three and accompanying family of four. we brought our 23' center console bay boat and dock was adequate. launching was a little challenging due to few ramps available to accomodate our larger boat. rental has lots of bath towels, comfortable beds and is nicely decorated.

we recommend this rental.

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay at Dock of the Bay. We love it there. There’s nothing like the peaceful, quiet bay to make you forget about the rest of the world. I apologize for the current boat ramp situation (closed ramp at Shell Point and Oyster Bay ramp in need of repair). Maybe Wakulla County will eventually build another ramp in Shell Point or lease the existing ramp and correct the slope, so that it is safe for public use. That is what they promised. We look forward to having you stay with us again! 8/9/2016 - Boat Ramp Update: Wakulla County is currently constructing a new ramp across the street from Shell Point Beach. I expect that it will be open within a month.

Just Another Day in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Never in our wildrest dreams could a place be so perfect. From the instant we opened the front door until the day that we closed it to return home, our experience at "Dock of the Bay" was everything we had hoped. Deb and Jerry know how to please their guests to the point that "we can't wait to get back next winter"! I was so fortunate to find them online, never dreaming our vacation would be so perfect right down to the lovely linens and heavenly beds, to a fully equipped kitchen - everything was there at our disposal including golf clubs to a fish cleaning station right on the boat dock. Everything was so tastefully decorated and folks were friendly everywhere we went. Taking our boat was one of the smartest things we ever did. Rod couldn't wait everyday to get out in the beautiful bay and hope for a great catch or not. We would spend many an evening out in the bay watching some of the most incredible sunsets. This is heaven folks, quiet, beautiful, no traffic and the place to be for one of the most relaxing vacations ever. Don't wait too long to make your reservations. Hats off to Deb, she is the Queen of the Rental Industry. Your every wish is her command. A most grateful couple, Linda and Rod

Shell Point is a small, quiet community located in Wakulla County, one of Florida's best-kept secrets and part of Florida's forgotten coast. Besides offering the best flats fishing anywhere, it's ideal for sightseeing and photography. It is located between St. Marks and Panacea, and is only 30 miles south of Tallahassee (Florida's capital). Tallahassee has all of the conveniences of a big city - malls, restaurants, museums, parks, airport - and is well known for being the home of Florida State University (FSU) and Florida A&M University (FAMU). If you are interested in fishing (trout, Spanish mackerel, redfish, tarpon, cobia, flounder, grouper, black bass ... it's saltwater fishing, so the list goes on), boating, or ... if you just want to escape to a relaxing, laid back paradise; yet, be able to venture into the city on a whim, this is the perfect location for you.
