|Minimum Stay||5 nights|
The Little House at Wild Meadow farm is “in town” but away from it all on a private road with a crooked stream, wild lupine fields and pretty grounds. Repeat guests are frequent and accolades common: “Our third year, and it just keeps getting better. I’ve been coming to MDI for 20 years and this is the most “comfy” house I’ve stayed in.” (Jen, Jenny + Mollie the dog) “We’ve had such a lovely week...The House itself is such a gem – light-filled, comfortable, clean and so thoughtfully decorated.” (Julia, Spiro + Theo) “Little House has been the perfect respite. We love everything about it.” (Rob + Elizabeth). The Little House features vintage hand-cut beams, airy living room, high ceilinged master bedroom, cozy twin bedroom, galley kitchen with open dining area, sky lit bathroom and small deck. A short walk to the shops and restaurants of Southwest Harbor. Easy access to everything: lakes, hiking, biking trails and ocean. Includes WIFI. The perfect spot for summer and fall vacations. If your dates are not available for The Little House, please also consider our newly renovated companion guest quarters - The Greenhouse - property #3469270 on Homeaway.
"Thank you for your hospitality - all the little touches like coffee and welcome biscuits for the dog. You have created a refuge that is full of visual treats...Our week was beautiful with beautiful weather, while back home in Delaware it was sweltering."
The Little House is cute and cozy and tastefully decorated. It is conveniently located to get to all of the tourist sites in the area yet far enough removed to have peace and quiet in the evening. The kitchen has everything that you could possibly need during your stay in regard to pots & pans, dishes, utensils, etc. Fair warning: you must be able to squat down and get back up to access dishes & cups as they are in a lower cupboard. My husband has difficulty in that regard but it wasn't a problem for me. The bed is comfortable but is only full size. The second bedroom has two twin beds so the cottage is accommodating for families. The backyard is beautiful with gardens, a picnic table, adirondack chairs and a BBQ charcoal grill. The west facing side deck has a table and two chairs and was a relaxing place to sip my tea in the morning. The Little House is located on a private road so the only cars going by are that of the owner and guests staying in the other rental house up the lane. There are great bagels and muffins and coffee a short walk up the street on the corner and also a small cafe to have a full breakfast. My husband brought his bicycle and found all kinds of roads and trails to explore in the morning while he waited for me to wake up. Acadia is a must. See Cadillac Mountain and Sand Beach and beautiful overlooks. There's a small lighthouse in Bass Harbor. If you don't mind climbing over rocks, there's a great sunset view from the eastern side. Head left from the parking lot rather than going down to the right if time is short. Echo Lake is nearby as is Little Long Pond. Don't miss sunset at Seal Cove! It was my favorite spot of all but not well marked for road signage. Continue all the way down Seal Cove Road (it turns to dirt; don't worry...it's passable and heavily used). At the end, turn right and take your next left. I believe it's Cape Road. There's a mini lighthouse on the corner. Seal Cove is just a short distance from there. It's also a great place to see lobster boats coming in with their fresh catch and loading them onto trucks. There's also access to put a canoe or kayak into the water and relatively calm since it's a cove. Lastly, if you are 62 or older you qualify for a $10 lifetime pass to any national park, which includes free admission for EVERYONE who is with you! If you don't already have one, you can buy one at Acadia. There is one plus to aging! :)
What started out as a one week vacation on Mount Desert Island has now very sensibly morphed into a two week excursion. Back in the summer of 2012 we were fortunate to discover the wonders of the Little House, and we like it so much we've stayed there each summer since. It's the perfect vacation home away from home: Quiet, light-filled, airy, and comfy-cozy. The porch on the side of the house is a nice place to hang out with a refreshing cocktail hour beverage, or to simply watch a gorgeous sunset. You're close to some great western mountain hiking trails--look out for those delish wild blueberries, the cooling waters of Echo Lake, and the shops and restaurants of Southwest Harbor. Do yourself a favor and try the tasty popovers at Common Good Café, and the fresh lobster at Beal's Lobster Pier (their traditional lobster roll--sautéed in butter--is the cat's meow).
We love hiking and lobster, and Mount Desert Island satisfies both needs; happily, this is fourth year that we've stayed at The Little House. We prefer the "quiet side" of the island, and this cottage is just perfect: it's bright and airy and quiet; the beds are comfy; and this year there's a marvelous new addition--a washer and dryer! The cottage and grounds, which include lovely perennial flower beds and gorgeous meadows, are meticulously maintained. The location is ideal--it's a quick walk or an even quicker drive to the shops and restaurants of Southwest Harbor (Beal's Lobster Pier is a favorite). There's a second equally lovely rental cottage on the grounds, The Greenhouse. The owners, Elena and Terry, who have a lovely home there as well, are always super friendly and helpful; their sweet dog Pip is the best.
The Little House was everything I was hoping for, and honestly more. The house is so comfortable and homey - it really feels like a home away from home. Everything we needed was there, and Elena even left us a little welcome basket! The yard and porch are quiet and private, and although the owners live next door I never felt like we were being watched over. The recommendations and tips left for us were very helpful too.
The location is great, it's away from the crowded parts of the island but not far from any of the things you'd like to do while you're there. It was a quick drive to Bar Harbor, places to park and meet up with the carriage trails and hiking spots. We even biked from the house to Echo Lake for a swim!
We LOVED staying here and using it as a home base for hiking, biking and exploring. Even on the one rainy day it was a pleasure to spend time at the house just reading and relaxing. We would definitely recommend staying here, and are already trying to plan our next stay!
This house was painted and furnished with care and class and is well situated and maintained. It feels like you are in a friends house instead of a rental. We chose to vacation on Mount Desert Island in the Fall to avoid the summer crowds and ride bikes (we rented in Southwest Harbor) through the brilliantly colored leaves on the carriage paths of Arcadia National Park. The temperatures in early October were perfect for bike riding or hiking. We worked up an appetite each day to enjoy some great meals at Thurston's (lobster). The Burning Tree, and Paddys. The house owner was very helpful and responsive and really cared that everything was okay for us. We plan on doing this again!
My husband and I and our two children (age 2 and 8 months) just returned from our epic vacation in Maine! Everything about this home was just perfect for us! It had everything we needed and we felt like we had our own little campground in the backyard. We ate breakfast outside every morning and had wine outside every evening. The location was also perfect, close to town and to the water. We visited Echo Lake, went tide pooling beyond the Causeway Club and enjoyed coffee right down the street from the Little House. Thank you Elena for accommodating our family last minute! I hope we get to come back and enjoy your wonderful home again!!!
Close to all Acadia National Park activities, and the free Island Explorer bus which will pick you and your bike up for easy travel to the park carriage roads, trails, and Bar Harbor. Southwest Harbor's village center, Beal's Lobster Pound, and the town dock are just a short distance away. Bike and kayak rentals are available in the village. Echo Lake and Long Pond are close by for swimming and kayaking. Excellent hiking trails for all levels of ability.
Other Activities: hiking, kayaking, and more hiking and kayaking!
