On the ocean, close to Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park and only 26 feet to a private beach. Watch seals bask in the sun and frolic in the water from the comfort of a couch or spacious deck. Eagles fly by and regularly perch in nearby trees. Near Ellsworth, Blue Hill, Bucksport, and Bangor. Quaint cottage completely refurbished including new bathroom and kitchen. Very peaceful and quiet. Please read our reviews to see what others have said about their stay with us.
We stayed a short time (4 days) in this clean, quiet, attractive cabin looking out over Union River Bay with great views, and did I mention the quiet? I didn't realize that I don't miss traffic noise and light pollution until we stayed here; very enjoyable.
This was our base for exploring the area (we'd stayed nearby previously) and Acadia NP and MDI. Very convenient to all. And you're a short hop to Ellsworth for anything you may need. Another plus for me was that I was off the grid (Virgin Mobile) in this area so got a break from calls and email, but only had to go a few miles to pick up a signal. Sometimes we just need to get back to basics to enjoy ourselves.
The cabin came with everything we needed, so you don't need to haul a lot of stuff to set up housekeeping here.
Russ and Dawn were enjoyable to work with, especially on short notice, and we set up our stay via a few emails and calls. No surprises. We even met the mom on arrival and she conveniently facilitated the lease.
Thanks for the pleasant stay and we may visit again.
P.S. I don't want to forget to mention dinner at our favorite Maine seafood restaurant, Union River Lobster Pot, in Ellsworth. Try their superb scallops, I had them twice, baked and fried, and they were really great. Enjoy!
What a wonderful cottage. Russ and Dawn have clearly worked very hard on renovating the space- it looks brand new, it is clean, quaint, nicely decorated and the perfect size for two people. The space is well organized and provides everything needed for a relaxing stay. It is the ideal location if you seek a peaceful setting surrounded by nature and nothing else. The waterfront view is spectacular. There is a great front patio to hang out and you can reach the rocky beach steps away, to explore during low tide.
The drive to Acadia National Park is roughly 45 minutes, depending on where in the park you want to go. Ellsworth is under 10 minutes away, which is a nice little town with a coffee shop, ice cream parlor, and some restaurants, though the kitchen in the cottage is well suited for cooking and enjoying a nice meal there.
Russ was very easy to reach and helpful in answering all my concerns. The booking process will require sending a check and signing a rental contract, it is not conducted on the website.
Thank you, Russ and Dawn, for sharing this gem with others! We can't wait to stay there again.
At first I was skeptical because we handled payment via check, outside of the VRBO website. I was looking for other reviews that mentioned this and couldn't find them, so I'll leave this here for anyone else who may be caught off guard - it worked out perfectly fine!
That said, Russ once said to me that this property is not a money maker for him. I now certainly agree. The pictures don't do the view any justice. This was my third time in Maine, and by far the best place I've stayed. The busiest part of the bay is the seals talking to each other at low tide, or the albatross singing in the distance. You get a pretty amazing view of the national park mountains too!
The place had linens, towels, dishware/glassware (even wine glasses), and otherwise fully stocked like a home. You don't need to bring anything except clothes.
It's an ideal home base to travel to Acadia (MDI and Schoodic), and Deer Isle, with everything in between and beyond. Food is nearby, although I'd recommend going to MDI to find some true gems (Thurstons is a must for lobster fans).
All in all, I highly, highly recommend this place. We were so blown away as all our expectations were exceeded and we can't wait to return.
When we arrived at our cottage we were so impressed with the location. It is on a quiet street and it sits on a point overlooking the water. When we opened the door of the cabin it was love at first sight! The woodwork is so beautiful. It felt warm and and inviting. It was clean and very well stocked, so you could easily settle right in and get to your vacation. Everything worked and the water was good to drink. We found lots to do and we were never bored. We were able to view eagles and seals right from the deck! There were plenty of good stores and hiking trails and excellent restaurants close by, so there was no need to travel far for anything. We had a ball and plan to return as soon as we are able to get away again. Thanks for a wonderful vacation!
Very clean, comfortable cottage with gorgeous view. We saw eagles and seals; enjoyed sitting on the deck and swimming in the bay. This was the best vacations we ever had! We would highly recommend this wonderful place! We would stay here again. Thank you for everything!
The cottage was fantastic. It was in a beautiful and peaceful location, away from the crowds of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, though an easy 30 minute drive away. The cottage was very clean and well kept, perfect for two people. Logistically Russ made the experience very easy for us.
Surry is located conveniently near Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, and Blue Hill. Our location is on a private country road. There is great dining, sightseeing, shopping, antiquing within a few miles in any direction.
