About Francoise Meissner

My husband and I made Seacoast New Hampshire our home 19 years ago. I am from the UK, my husband from Germany and we moved from Europe with our two young boys . We love New England and its seasons - warm summers, bright, cold winters and the most spectacular autumn colors one can imagine. And when spring comes it truly is a rebirth of nature!

Francoise Meissner purchased this chalet in 2005

Why Francoise Meissner chose Acton

My husband and I fell in love with New England lakes as an alternative to the crowded summer beaches where the water is SO cold. We found this sweet cottage on a quiet lake with good swimming/kayaking/fishing! Since we now live on the waterfront on Great Bay in Durham, we decided to rent our Horn Pond cottage to share the lake house and its peaceful family friendly surroundings with others looking for a memorable waterfront holiday.

What makes this chalet unique

Warm days jumping off the dock into the cool waters of the lake and then sitting by the fire on a summer's evening listening to the call of the loons.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We couldn't have had a more lovely time...your home is just the perfect blend of simplicity and quaint. From the singing loons to the lapping of the water, to the peepers in the night, we enjoyed all that was still. Great comfy beds! That never happens! We couldn't have enjoyed the kayaks, the dock with the pretty red chairs and the calm of your screened-in porch more. It was all simply delicious!

Lovely Owners--Fun Family Stay for Columbus Day Weekend

  • 4 of 5

Our family (myself, my husband, our kids ages 2, 5, and 7, my dad, and our dog) stayed at this adorable chalet Friday night through Monday afternoon, Columbus Day weekend. We had a bit of a hiccup once we arrived Friday night and found that there was no running water in the house due to an issue with the well water pump. The issue was fixed by the following morning, to our relief. Owners, Francoise and Jochen stayed calm, gracious, and generous throughout the first few hours of this issue, even as we panicked and lost our cool. They did everything to accommodate us, including offering a hotel for the night (we ended up staying and camping out in the house with bottled water), having a neighbor check in on us, then comped us a night for the rental balance. When Jochen arrived the following morning to fix the pump, he arrived with bottles of wine and a jug of water. Lovely, lovely people.

The rest of the weekend went smoothly. The house itself is cozy, with smaller main rooms than we expected, but plenty of bedrooms--two upstairs and two downstairs. Three of the bedrooms have bunk beds. The kitchen is well supplied. The downstairs common area has a nice wrap-around bar and a gas fireplace. There is a very nice screened-in second floor porch that leads to the large deck--both overlook the pond. The crowing glory of the house (we think), is the expansive back yard and very nice u-shaped dock. We spent the majority of our stay on that dock fishing and enjoying the view. Horn pond is just an amazing little pond. The water is clear--and it wasn't too cold in early October. We caught a number of fish, including a rainbow trout and several small to medium sized bass--right off the dock. We enjoyed using the fire pit in the yard. The neighborhood was VERY quiet and the pond was so peaceful.

For families traveling with mobile infants and toddlers, the house is difficult to baby proof. The staircase is open concept and there was no way to baby gate it off. It was a bit difficult wrangling our two-year-old in the downstairs room. We finagled a baby gate upstairs using our portable gate and a kitchen chair. Also, the bathroom doesn't have a bathtub--there's only a small, upright shower. I gave our two-year-old a bath in the kitchen sink (he loved it), and my other kids and I used the outdoor shower (awesome!) exclusively. My husband and dad used the indoor shower and admitted it was a little cramped .We enjoyed our stay, thank you again, Francoise and Jochen

Owner's Response: We are very happy to hear that the weekend was enjoyed by all. We do our very best to respond quickly to any problems that may arise and wish all our guests a wonderful stay at our cottage on the lake. And, wow, how exciting to hear that you caught a rainbow trout and several bass! You had better luck than us! Hope to welcome you again in the future.

Dirty, run down

Owner's Response: Surprise and disappointment were my first reactions when I read this review. Surprise because I have rented for many years and have never received a negative review. I called the renter immediately and listened to his complaints. I have assured him that I will address the issues he brought up. Disappointed that he didn't call or email me immediately so that I could address them right away. And disappointed that my lovely cottage did not turn out to be the right place for his vacation. I hope that future potential renters will look at the positive reviews on my property and continue to enjoy what this rental has to offer. I am always available by phone or email in case certain things come up during someone's rental period.

Great escape to the lake!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, and our two dogs came here for the long weekend in the fall. We enjoyed the property and it was clean and neat. The house had everything we needed and it was cozy.( The beds were very comfy) The view from the house to the lake was beautiful. We enjoyed the views from the deck and the dock with our coffee or with our cocktails in the evening. We enjoyed the use of the kayaks on the lake. We've never done it before, and it was certainly a bonus to be able to enjoy them. We used the outdoor shower for our stay there. The one inside is small, but it was a nice to be able to use the outdoor shower before the really cold weather was upon us. We were outside as much as possible. Went walking the pups every day in the near by trails. We had beautiful weather all weekend, except on Sunday. We just stayed indoors and played games provided( Some need updating) and watched movies.( It was hard not having regular tv, but movies were provided, but they were older. If you can bring own they have a VCR and regular DVD(Not Blue Ray) slots on the tv. We appreciated having WIFI and it was a strong signal. Lastly, Francoise was wonderful to work with. She was quick to respond to all my questions and concerns prior to renting her property. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us all. Looking forward to renting again.

Thanks,

Lisa and Kevin Boyce

Would have been real plus to have cable tv.(you should probably be more clear about that on your website).

Owner's Response: I am sorry you hoped for cable TV and didn't find it at the cottage. I have since made a special note under "amenities" explaining that, although there is a TV, we do not have cable - one can only watch DVDs. For 2017 we have added a new 40" flatscreen ROKU Smart-TV. Thank you for your suggestion.

Ideal Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place. It was exactly what we wanted.

Having never rented a vacation house, we did not know what to expect. The owners made it easy for us and were a pleasure to deal with. Upon our arrival, the home was spotless. What a relief. The kitchen was well equipped. Plenty of offerings for indoor activities (we had two days of rain, thank you for the chess game) and outdoor activities. The canoe, kayaks, lawn golf and badminton set were used and kept the kids busy when they were not in the lake.

The home is situated privately on the lot and the neighbors were quiet. The lake was not noisy or too busy. Just enough waves for those of us who like to float. Listening to the loons was the best.

The kids enjoyed the Ushaped dock, the swim raft and got a kick out of the bunk beds.

The screen porch was what sold us on renting this property. It's where we spent a lot of our time.

Overall, a very happy family vacation.
