About the property

Holiday home, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, (Sleeps 4)

In a quiet street in the centre of Enkhuizen, the so called 'Boerenhoek' (farmers' corner), you will find this cosy holiday home with a small jetty. From the conservatory, you walk straight onto the terrace which looks out on a small canal. From there you can cosily float along to larger waterways. The home is within walking distance of a supermarket (150 m), but of course you could always go for a meal in the centre of Enkhuizen. Here you will find - besides good restaurants - pleasant shopping streets, terraces and the Zuiderzee museum. This indoor- and outdoor museum tells the history of daily life around the Zuiderzee. Enjoy a nice walk or cycling trip along the Ijssel lake or visit the other big cities of the region like Hoorn, Alkmaar and Haarlem. You will definitely have a good time!

Doelenlaantje is really quite a small house - by English standards - but quite a reasonable size when compared to much of the housing stock in the Netherlands. In fact it's quite bizarre that the nation with the tallest people (certainly those under 35) should inhabit some of the most compact homes.

Enkhuizen is a pretty, old Dutch port and town, and this house sits right in the middle of it, in a row of other pretty houses, with a small feeder canal at the bottom of the (modest) garden, there is a street of shops within 100 yds of the front door, and the town's main shopping street is at the end of that. So one can pop out to the local supermarket (Deens) in the middle of cooking a meal to buy a missing ingredient!

The house comprises a single open lounge\/diner\/kitchen making up an 'L' in the ground floor, with the hall\/stairs and bathroom making up the final 1\/4rd. This leads out to a lovely little veranda, conservatory or sunroom (take your choice) which is warm and light even in the Autumn, then out onto the patio garden equipped with a very substantial garden table and chairs. There's even a little garden seat at the end, by the canal, where you can sit and read a book and catch the last of the evening sun, but - being Holland - to get there, you need a machete to get through the webs the huge industrious spiders weave every night! The stairs are typically Dutch, very steep, and curving, and I would worry about elderly infirm or young children attempting these without supervision. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, with one of them, additionally, having a sort of mezzanine for kids. The bathroom is... how shall I put it?... 'compact', but with a lovely wetroom-style shower, with a typically efficient continental direct hot water system. Note There is no bathroom or toilet upstairs. The kitchen is OK, but if the place was mine I would swap the under-counter fridge for an oven, and put a full height fridge-freezer next to it.

Parking in Oude Enkhuizen was hard in autumn and in summer it must be a nighmare, and is with parking pass only. And renting this house, one is blessed with both a parking place AND the use of a permit. You will come to value this greatly!

We enjoyed our stay, and hope to go again.
