Upon arrival of the renters, we walked them through every room of the house. They did not express any concern that the house was not clean during the walk through.
On Saturday the weather was still bad and around 1:45 p.m. I received a call from our guest indicating that there was a burning odor from the water heater and they shut it off. She said they might need to leave since they wouldn't have hot water. I told her I'd try to get a serviceman over and that I'd call her right back. She said the weather wasn't that good; they'd be there. I was able to get hold of the serviceman who had installed the heater. He had the day off but said he would get right over. I called the renter to let her know this.
The serviceman called when he arrived at the house around 2:30. He called again around 3 when he was done. He indicated that there had been parts from the heater laying on the floor and that it appeared that someone had tampered with it. He also said that if the heater was smoking, it would have automatically shut off and not need to be turned off as they had indicated. He said it was fine now and they would have hot water with 15 - 20 minutes.
I called the renter back right after the serviceman left to tell her that the water heater was fixed and they should have hot water in a few minutes. At this point she said that they were thinking of leaving anyway. Out of the blue she said that the house was dirty and they cleaned it. I told her I was surprised by this as we had done a walk through with her and her husband and everything was fine. I asked why she hadn't commented during our walk through or ever mentioned this problem before now. She had no response. At that point I said to call me if there were further problems.
At 4:15 I received a call to say that they were leaving. She asked if there was any possibility of getting money back for the second night. I indicated that as it was late Saturday and the water heater 'problem' had been resolved immediately and that it was already late in the day on Saturday, I could not refund money for Saturday. She said that's what she thought, but thought she'd ask anyway.
I'm sorry that the weather was bad and their plans were spoiled. I do however disagree with their portrayal of the house as not clean. In fact, we were suspect as it was only after the heater was quickly repaired that they even mentioned the house not being clean.
We absolutely love this house and the home owners! We're a family of six, with 2 teenagers, a preteen, and preschooler. This place was perfect for us. We have visited 3 summers in a row and planning our 4th. The house is clean and we'll maintained, every year they have done some kind of improvement. There's cable tv and wireless internet, a must with teenagers. The neighborhood is quiet and safe. We often left the doors unlocked and the windows open all day and night, even while out, without any incident. There was something to do everyday, as the location is near everything, but roomy enough if you just want to stay in and relax. We've visited michigan adventure, the museum, a couple different beaches and the drive in movies. We had a BBQ and bonfire right in the back yard, of course we enjoyed s'mores. The back yard was spacious, and clean. 1 year we brang our well trained dog, who extremely enjoyed the yard. Even our teenagers loved the yard, as the owners have bird feeders, the teens like watching the different birds. They even bought us bird feed when it was empty, because they knew the kids enjoyed it so much. The price is extremely affordable. It has everything you need, if you forget something meijer is literally around the corner. I can't rave enough about the home or the owners. It has always been a wonderful vacation without worries. We would recommend this place to anyone.
This house is perfect for vacation is very close to michigan adventure and the lakes is a quiet neighborhood we recommend this place we enjoyed our stay there
This is truly a home away from home. Close to town with a country setting. Loved staying here.
This is a wonderfully quaint vacation home with lots of character and vintage details. It is well-maintained, very clean, and has a full kitchen, washer and dryer, not to mention plenty of sleeping space for a full family. If you're looking for a 5-star hotel feel or prefer a modern home with brand new amenities, then this is not it. BUT, like me, if you appreciate older homes for their charm and warm feel, then you will love staying here.
Additionally, it also has the added amenities of cable, wireless internet, and flat screen TVs in almost every room. You really couldn't ask for anything more!
I have stayed here multiple times in both cooler and warmer months and no matter what time of year this property is extremely enjoyable. The fire pit in the backyard is perfect for a cool night or a family bonfire. During the summer, it's so close to the beach you won't want to stay indoors! If you're like me and come here to find a little respite from the loud noises of the city, then you'll also enjoy the neighborhood. It's safe, peaceful, quiet, and the only noises you'll hear are birds chirping.
I honestly can't say enough about how wonderful the owners are either. They are wonderful, kind, and responsible people who will respond to any concerns you may have as quickly as possible. This home means a lot to them, so they want to make sure you feel as happy and comfortable as possible during your stay.
Last, but certainly not least, the home has an attached garage with a fully mechanical garage door, so you have a designated space to put your vehicle when you come visit that is free from the elements. Although I wouldn't mind leaving my car in the driveway here because the neighborhood is so safe, it's nice to have the garage in case you are here when the weather is bad.
I would 100% recommend this home to anyone looking for a relaxing, quiet, no frills weekend (or week) at the beach. I, myself, cannot wait to go back!
My boyfriend and I stayed at this adorable house last month on a weekend getaway to Muskegon. I fell in love with the Lake up there. The place is only a short 10min drive from the beach in a quiet residential area. It’s an older home but they’ve done a great job renovating it. What a deal considering we had the whole house to ourselves! I loved the fire pit in the backyard! The home owners were wonderful to work with and very hospitable. Would definitely come here again! :)
All I can say is FANTASTIC! I came to Muskegon because my band was playing a festival and we needed an affordable, pet friendly place to stay. All the hotels were too expensive, and camping was not an option( I needed electricity and showers to prepare and get ready to play on stage). I found this home online, and there was a group of us, and this home was able to sleep all of us. PLUS, unlike hotels, we had a full kitchen with stove, microwave, large fridge, coffee maker, cupboards, and a living room and dining room. A whole house and the backyard was fenced in and gigantic which was perfect for my beautiful black lab. There was no beating the price, and the home was soooo close to one of the most beautiful beaches in Michigan. I mean in 5 minutes, you were at a beautiful white sandy clean beach. With waves! My dog too! My dog could swim and I was not given any trouble! The owners were absolutely a delight and quite the generous couple. Very reasonable, honest people. It was worth the price and the deposit was very reasonable. The deposit is only a protective formality. It's simple, clean up after yourselves, respect the property, and just leave it as you found it. I received my deposit back no questions asked. I even had my dog, but mind you my dog is a very well behaved, very well trained, friendly and house trained 100%. It was a simple weekend contract agreement, we stayed, we received our deposit back, smooth and simple, and left talking about when we could come back. I can't wait to bring my fiancee here for a more personal and private escape. I can't wait to take him to that beach and watch the sunrise, and then the sunset with a glass of wine and our happy dog. Then go back to the house for a romantic bonfire and delicious grilling. They even included the firewood for the bonfire pit and the charcoal for the grill when we were there!! Next time, we are going to go to Michigan Adventures too! It's so close to this home, it would definitely be perfect for a family, especially in today's economy. Lodging alone prevents many family vacations. This home would help make Michigan Adventures a much more affordable vacation, and you have the privacy of an entire home, so you can make meals at the home instead of spending so much going out to dinner, another thing to save money on. AND forget anything, and Meijer is 1 mile down the street. Needless to say,the location was mint, absolutely perfect. This is a mission I recommend to all.Do come-MS MOLLY
