We have enjoyed our summers here for 40+ years, and we think your family will love it too!
Ocean Beach offers 2 playgrounds, school library, movies/concerts, a day camp, tennis courts, basketball courts, a softball field, and plenty of shops in town and restaurants on the bay.

About M.J. & S.J. Shapiro, owner
This original cottage has been in our family for 47 yrs. We love our little cottage and hope you will enjoy staying here!
M.J. & S.J. Shapiro, owner purchased this Cottage in 1970
Why M.J. & S.J. Shapiro, owner chose Ocean Beach
This cottage is one of the few remaining original cottages in Ocean Beach (circa 1906). It has been in our family since 1970 and we have tried to retain the traditional qualities of a seasonal beach house. This is classic and humble home with new amenities we believe will be both comforting and welcoming.

A wonderful oasis
We stayed here in August and absolutely LOVED the house. It is shabby chic with a lovely beach vibe where nothing seems forced. While I loved the decor on the inside, we spent most of our time on the two lovely screened in porches. My 5 year old LOVED discovering some of the old games and books and he now knows what a CD player is :) The kitchen is new and has everything you can think of. Her Fire Island cookbook was my favorite and we managed to not go out to eat once! I took a shower in the rain in their outdoor shower, which was just a bit of heaven. The house is maybe 100 steps from the beach and Sally is wonderful at communication. As hot as it was, we did not find need for the ACs in the bedroom as there was a wonderful breeze. My only recommendation would be for the top bunk bed to have a rail of sorts. It looked to be a custom built bed and was lovely, as was the selection of children's books at the top, but we didn't let our son sleep up there.
We hope to return next year!
Hello and thank you for the very nice comments about your comfortable stay in our beach cottage. We are so pleased you may be returning next summer! Regarding your suggestion for the upper bunkbed, we will be replacing the current railing with a taller one, so that both children and parents will feel more secure. Thank you for this suggestion and hope to see you all next summer.
A great location, this hidden treasure is #1.
Clean, well stocked with a very attentive property owner. Directions left on table were clear - repeated on magnets on fridge. LOVE the outdoor shower: the best feature for a beach house.
Thanks for your kind comments. We are so pleased you found everything you needed for a comfortable stay. We hope to see you in future summers! Take care.
Lovely old cottage, well cared for with modern updates.
Perfect getaway. Comfy house with every thing you need plus close to beach.
So glad you were comfortable in our Fire Island cottage. We love that you appreciate our little place in paradise! Hope to see you in future summers. 🌞
A Great Fire Island Rental!
This house was wonderful! The internet pictures do not do it justice. It is much nicer in person. The cottage location is perfect; about half way between the ocean and town. Easy, fast walk to both with just enough people traffic, but not noisy. The house has nice trees in the front yard which gives you privacy when sitting on front porch, but you can still enjoy people watching. There are 2 screened- in porches. Both are spacious, with comfortable furniture and decorated really nicely. The living room has high ceilings, a fireplace, some nice new furniture, and a great big comfortable (second) dining table. The kitchen is newly renovated and well stocked with nice quality dishes and glasses and all the cooking items you might need. The second porch off the kitchen is charming and immediately inviting. We spent the most of our indoor time there. Everyone who saw it loved it. The back deck alone is reason enough to rent this house. Large, comfortable furniture, nice plants, with two separate areas, one for lounging and one for dining. Private and quiet. The newly renovated outdoor shower was great. Large with a separate dressing room area to bring all your stuff in. Plus there is a full additional half bathroom (toilet and sink) next to the outdoor shower. The full indoor bathroom is completely new with a terrific shower. (Yes, I did break the Fire Island rule and took an indoor shower. It was great! ) All the rooms are decorated with nice art, fun pillows, old books. Lots of character! There are enough closets and drawer space in each bedroom to unpack everything you bring. And the house is clean, clean, clean with nice towels and linens. Washer and dryer indoors, so convenient. The landlord is attentive, helpful and fair and got back to me immediately during my week whenever I had any questions.
This house is a winner!
Thank you for the complimentary detailed review! I'm so pleased you enjoyed your stay in our beach cottage. We are lucky to have both front and back screened-in porches. Along with the back deck, they are the most-used living areas in the summer months. We hope you and your family can return; we will hold this years' rental price for next summer!
ANOTHER FANTASTIC SU VACAY!
I just love this little home! It is everything I think of when I think of a beach cottage on Fire Island. It is clean and well stocked, close to all places, but far enough to be quiet at night. There is plenty of little shops near by as well as great places to eat. The beach is a short walk/wagon ride away. Would do this every year, if I could.
Cozy cottage, steps to beach and town
The photos of this home do not do it justice. We are seasoned vacation renters, and it is the coziest property we have stayed in. When we arrived the house was immaculate, and the kitchen and pantry were well stocked. The proximity to the beach cannot be beat. We spent most of our time at the beach and in “town”, but when we were at the cottage we especially loved lounging on the screened in porches. The outdoor shower (complete with warm water!) was a dream come true. Having an additional bathroom outside seemed strange to us at first, but soon found ourself remarking, "What a great idea!"
The property owner was a pleasure to work with; she was in touch regularly as our rental week approached, and made herself available when we had questions. It was very obvious to us that she would like her renters to feel at home; there were little notes posted around the house to instruct us how to use the remote control, the washer and dryer, etc. Our family of four was very comfortable here; I would happily recommend this property to families with young children, as well as anyone else looking for a low-key getaway.
I'm so pleased you and your family enjoyed your week in our family beach house. I plan to post new photos to reflect the many upgrades and new furnishings. We value our many returning families and hope you can return next summer! SJS
Spend the day at the beach or take a short walk into the village on the Great South Bay. There you will find bayside swimming with lifeguard, bay-front restaurants, grocery stores, a movie theatre and many shops.
The Village of Ocean Beach has a playground, children's day camp, tennis and basketball courts, softball field, library, water taxis and ferries to other Fire Island communities. Catholic and Protestant churches and a Synagogue are nearby. East of Ocean Beach is the 'Sunken Forest,' part of Fire Island National Seashore, a nice day hike. West of Ocean Beach is the Fire Island Lighthouse, a National Park Service museum and monument completed in 1858.
