Leave your car, your shoes and the noise of the city behind. Ocean Beach on Fire Island is a charming community without cars, where the residents walk barefoot to the beach, ride bicycles (weekdays) and use wagons to carry their belongings. We have enjoyed our summers here for 40+ years, and we think your family will love it too!
Ocean Beach offers a playground, library, movie theatre, children's day camp, tennis and basketball courts and softball field. Catholic and Protestant churches and a Synagogue are nearby.

M.J. & S.J. Shapiro, owner purchased this cottage in 1970
This cottage is one of the few remaining original cottages in Ocean Beach (circa 1906). It has been in our family since 1970 and we have tried to retain the traditional qualities of a seasonal beach house. This is classic and humble home with new amenities we believe will be both comforting and welcoming.
Original Fire Island beach cottage. Very hard to find an old home with a large deck and two screened-in porches.
Renovated inside bathroom and bedrooms (2014). New kitchen (2009).
New foundation (2010) and roof (2008-9) saved our cottage from flooding during Hurricane Sandy in 2011. All new living room furniture and decor (2015).
This house was wonderful! The internet pictures do not do it justice. It is much nicer in person. The cottage location is perfect; about half way between the ocean and town. Easy, fast walk to both with just enough people traffic, but not noisy. The house has nice trees in the front yard which gives you privacy when sitting on front porch, but you can still enjoy people watching. There are 2 screened- in porches. Both are spacious, with comfortable furniture and decorated really nicely. The living room has high ceilings, a fireplace, some nice new furniture, and a great big comfortable (second) dining table. The kitchen is newly renovated and well stocked with nice quality dishes and glasses and all the cooking items you might need. The second porch off the kitchen is charming and immediately inviting. We spent the most of our indoor time there. Everyone who saw it loved it. The back deck alone is reason enough to rent this house. Large, comfortable furniture, nice plants, with two separate areas, one for lounging and one for dining. Private and quiet. The newly renovated outdoor shower was great. Large with a separate dressing room area to bring all your stuff in. Plus there is a full additional half bathroom (toilet and sink) next to the outdoor shower. The full indoor bathroom is completely new with a terrific shower. (Yes, I did break the Fire Island rule and took an indoor shower. It was great! ) All the rooms are decorated with nice art, fun pillows, old books. Lots of character! There are enough closets and drawer space in each bedroom to unpack everything you bring. And the house is clean, clean, clean with nice towels and linens. Washer and dryer indoors, so convenient. The landlord is attentive, helpful and fair and got back to me immediately during my week whenever I had any questions.
This house is a winner!
I just love this little home! It is everything I think of when I think of a beach cottage on Fire Island. It is clean and well stocked, close to all places, but far enough to be quiet at night. There is plenty of little shops near by as well as great places to eat. The beach is a short walk/wagon ride away. Would do this every year, if I could.
The photos of this home do not do it justice. We are seasoned vacation renters, and it is the coziest property we have stayed in. When we arrived the house was immaculate, and the kitchen and pantry were well stocked. The proximity to the beach cannot be beat. We spent most of our time at the beach and in “town”, but when we were at the cottage we especially loved lounging on the screened in porches. The outdoor shower (complete with warm water!) was a dream come true. Having an additional bathroom outside seemed strange to us at first, but soon found ourself remarking, "What a great idea!"
The property owner was a pleasure to work with; she was in touch regularly as our rental week approached, and made herself available when we had questions. It was very obvious to us that she would like her renters to feel at home; there were little notes posted around the house to instruct us how to use the remote control, the washer and dryer, etc. Our family of four was very comfortable here; I would happily recommend this property to families with young children, as well as anyone else looking for a low-key getaway.
This Ocean Beach cottage is set in the perfect location between the ocean and the "town". It is very tastefully decorated and includes both a front and back porch with plenty of seating and cozy places to curl up with a good book or board game. This home was very clean and included everything (and more) that a renter could possibly need (except personal items, of course). As first time renters we were thankful that the owner was so thorough and provided excellent verbal and written information in the months prior to our vacation date through our departure. She was extremely welcoming and even provided a packet including the local history of Ocean Beach as well as places to visit and things to do (maps included). The pictures of the home really do not do it justice and we were happily surprised at how much space was available in this home for our family of four. The home included a large beautiful deck with a barbeque which we used often as well as a new full indoor bathroom and a fantastic outdoor shower! The local restaurants were excellent, as was the night life and ice cream parlor! The local grocery store was surprisingly well-stocked and had fresh produce each day. The beach was gorgeous and we were lucky to have beautiful weather each day. We truly loved our stay at this home and definitely would rent here again.
The place was clean and well stocked with everything one would expect to find in their own home (except personal items, of course). Owner was great with communicating rights and responsibilities of the vacationer both verbally and via a compiled packet upon arrival. We enjoyed all the local night life, ate out at a few restaurants, had a massage at the local spa and while we brought most of our food with us - we did use the local grocery store too (which was well stocked with everything we needed). There was also a liquor store - very conveniently located at the top of Cottage Way" where our home was located. I could not have asked for a better place to vacation, as I loved this bright, cheery & quaint home. The outside photo does not do it justice: except to show how private the property is for the vacationers!
This was a really lovely house that was just perfect for our family. It is located between midway and the ocean, so close to the beach and far enough from town to avoid the noise. The house has a wonderful and large outdoor deck with lots of flowers and mature trees on the property for plenty of shade (and sunny spots too). There are blueberry bushes all around and the kids loved to pick them for breakfast. I love to spend all my time outdoors on FI so the deck, lovely screen porch, and outdoor shower were just perfect. The inside of the house has high ceilings and lots of light. The owner makes great use of the small space and the house was very comfortable. I would definitely rent it again.
Spend the day at the beach or take a short walk into the village on the Great South Bay. There you will find bayside swimming with lifeguard, bay-front restaurants, grocery stores, a movie theatre and many shops.
The Village of Ocean Beach has a playground, children's day camp, tennis and basketball courts, softball field, library, water taxis and ferries to other Fire Island communities. Catholic and Protestant churches and a Synagogue are nearby. East of Ocean Beach is the 'Sunken Forest,' part of Fire Island National Seashore, a nice day hike. West of Ocean Beach is the Fire Island Lighthouse, a National Park Service museum and monument completed in 1858.
