About Jane Corwin and Dennis Spain

We built the main house in 2000. Following retirement, in mid-2016 we decided to move permanently to Montana from Virginia and have settled into the main house. We decided to construct a separate large garage/studio apartment next to the main house so that we could offer this property for vacation rental in 2017. Everyone that sees this new studio is amazed with its awesome, custom designed features and unparalleled views. We also have two reining horses and a new barn and arena on our property. We built the barn with the idea of also offering a "glamping" option for those seeking a "real Montana experience". We are avid outdoors people and enjoy all of what Montana offers--gorgeous mountains, rivers and lakes.

Jane Corwin and Dennis Spain purchased this guest house in 2000

Why Jane Corwin and Dennis Spain chose Montana

Though we are not originally from Montana, having spent most of our lives in Virginia, we have always felt connected to this "Last Great Place". It is the perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors and live an active, healthy lifestyle. It truly is a special place and we love sharing it with friends, family and newcomers to the area.

What makes this guest house unique

The benefits of this property are the amazing views, the quietness and privacy but also the accessibility to all that Glacier Country offers. Close to the downtown of Kalispell, stores, great restaurants, music and the arts, but far enough away that you feel that you are surrounded by mountains and lakes. We are a very close easy 3 miles to the Somers Boat Landing and Rails to Trails bike path. We are 50 minutes from the entrance to West Glacier and Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort and 30 minutes from Blacktail Mountain Ski Area. In addition, there are few places that also offer the opportunity to stay on a real horse property--watching horses graze while gazing out at the amazing scenery is truly a one of the kind experience.

Recently completed "Pioneer Cabin" themed barn loft one bedroom space is available for rent for an additional $100 per night. Beautiful rustic and authentic antiques give this space a very unique feel. There is only an RV toilet in the barn, but the full bathroom in the lower level of garage can be used for showering. This is basically a "GLAMPING" option but extremely private and lovely.

The best of the Flathead Valley at your fingertips

  • 5 of 5

This gorgeous custom loft located on the Achewa property overlooks the northern side of the Flathead lake (pictures cannot do the views day or night justice). Within minutes you can be swimming, kayaking, boating, fishing etc in the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi or hiking in the Swan Mountain range. There is a grocery store within 15 minutes in Kalispell, MT and great restaurants within 15-20 minutes in Big Fork, MT (Make reservations in the summer!).

The west entrance of Glacier National Park is about 45-50 minutes from the loft but about 3 hours if you drive to further point in the park (along Going-to-Sun Road) to Many Glacier. Despite the drive to the park, the amenities and privacy of this loft, made the drive much more palatable to staying inside the very busy park.

This loft is not for individuals uninterested in caring for this property during your stay, as if it were your own. However, it is perfect for those looking for a quiet, down to earth place to stay and live among some of the nicest individuals I have ever met. The loft does have a fully stocked kitchen with nearly every small and large appliance. Off of the garage under the loft, there is a washer and dryer for use, as well. On the property, you will also find the owners' home and a horse barn with a section rented for "glamping."

One last note, it was quickly evident that the area was experiencing a drought and very warm temperatures during our stay. Check the weather or talk to the owners for a more updated weather report to best pack for your trip (the owners were super helpful when planning for our trip). We recommend lots of sunscreen and hats during outdoor adventures. The windows in the loft open and it cooled quickly overnight. There is also an air conditioner but we used it rarely opting for fans to save energy.

Owner's Response: We loved hosting Brittany and her husband and they were so thoughtful to try to conserve energy, they even bought us a small fan, even though we do have air conditioning. Most of the time you don't need AC here in Glacier Country as it does cool off at night. Yes, given the amount of attention and care that has gone into building and decorating this studio, we do appreciate guests who take care of our place. It is a dream spot for us and we love to share it with folks who will have many wonderful memories to take home.

Amazing Home on Flathead!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay at Achewa!!! Jane was wonderful to work with and was very helpful planning our trip. Everything was well stock including a beautiful kitchen with anything one would need. The home was immaculate and we enjoyed all the art and details in each room. The views from the deck were incredible and in the evening the stars were fabulous!!! There is so much to do from hiking in Glacier and Jewel Basin to horseback riding, rafting, and fishing for trout in Flathead. We enjoyed many of the local restaurants and shopping was close by. Would recommend this home to relax and restore your spirit !

Magical Place

  • 4 of 5

Achewa was a magical place to enjoy a true Montana experience. Ideal location with a million dollar view close to Flathead Lake access, Glacier National Park, Zipline, Horseback riding, and Whitewater rafting. If you are choosing a non-air conditioned summer property, you will not find a more luxurious vacation rental. This immaculate mountain retreat had all the comforts and ample space for our family. We were blown away every evening enjoying the sunsets from the hot tub.

Owner's Response: Magical it is! We are so glad you had a wonderful time in spite of the record breaking heat wave! Never before have the temperatures soared so high! Fortunately, the downstairs stays cool regardless of the heat which we know is so important for getting a good night's sleep after hiking, horsebackriding and fishing! If the warming trend continues, we will have to think about air conditioning in the main living area in the years ahead and perhaps also start planting grapevines on our southeast facing slopes! Montana wines! What a great idea!

best vacation ever

  • 5 of 5

we had a mini-family reunion at this FABULOUS house in Montana and I cant speak highly enough about it. House is impeccable. The view is outstanding, overlooking the lake with the mountains in the background. All amenities are included, we didn't even have to get toilet paper. Well-stocked kitchen was a pleasure to cook in. The hot tub was wonderfully relaxing after a day of hiking or white-water rafting. Most nights we all sat on the deck just looking up at meteors and thousands of stars.

Only drawback is the last few miles of road to get to the house, up a steep gravel incline but the view and location are worth it.We had a van that did just fine.

Jane was the perfect hostess, answered any questions, gave great directions and hints as to where to go for fun.

We liked it so much we want to move to Montana!

Owner's Response: There is never enough time to see everything Glacier Country has to offer and this is not the first time, people who have stayed, want to actually move here! The 1 mile private road up to the house is actually being improved this Fall, so the drive up will be easier, but as was said, the view is worth it each and every time.

Best View of Flathead Lake

  • 5 of 5

Such a gorgeous home!! My stay at Achewa was phenomenal. This rental features everything you need to fully experience the secluded and calming experience of Montana without skimping on the amenities. Everything was in great condition and very clean. The view from the deck and living room was incomparable. The kitchen was fully stocked with anything you could need! It was one of my favorite vacation kitchens I have ever cooked in. Jane is also great to work with. She has many resources of suggested activities and restaurants easily accessible for renters to see. There was never a dull moment! I would highly recommend this property to friends and relatives, and I can not wait to go back!

Enchanting Achewa!

  • 4 of 5

We (two families, 4 adults, 6 kids aged 7 mos - 9yrs) stayed at Achewa for the last week of July 2014.

The first thing anyone must talk about with respect to this property is the view - absolutely phenomenal. It felt like we were living in a postcard for a week! Lots of wildlife around - although we only saw whitetail deer.

We found the home to be very well-maintained in general - everything functioned perfectly.

The kitchen was extremly well-equipped -probably the best equipped property we have rented (we rent approximately 2 homes a year off VRBO). Chocolate birthday cake, banana bread for breakfast - no problem, the kitchen had everything we needed.

My husband and I were lucky enough to have the master bedroom as our sleeping quarters - it was a small oasis for us, remote from the rest of the house and, for some reason, cooler too. And waking up to that the view every day...just gorgeous.

The weather was hot (33-35C) for our entire stay and we did find the house heated up quite a bit by late afternoon, but opening up the loft windows in the morning helped with tremendously. Plus late afternoon / evening was prime deck time! Did I mention the view?

One last note: the home owner was a bit concerned by the ages of our children when we initially contacted her about renting this property. Having seen the place now, I understand her reservations. The home is located on a heavily wooded hillside (hence the amazing view) and there isn't really a flat, grassy area or a family / games room where the kids can run and wear off steam. We tired the kids out by spending our days at the lake / doing all kinds of other activities and had a lovely time at Achewa overall, but I do think the property is probably better suited to families with teenagers or adult groups.

Owner's Response: The views surrounding Achewa are certainly one of the best and we are so glad you were able to get some rest and relaxation. As I stress for all prospective renters with small children, given the fact that we are up in the mountains and have all kinds of wildlife, including bear, it is not the kind of place where you can let children run free, probably not a good idea anywhere if you are surrounded by forests. That being said, we brought our children here each summer and they have all grown up to appreciate the natural wonders of Montana and all it has to offer! One of the great benefits of Achewa is that we are right above the lake and very close to the Somers Beach and Boat Landing, which provides great access and very safe swimming in crystal clear waters just minutes from the house--the best playground for sure!

This spacious, beautiful, custom built vacation rental is perfectly situated at the North end of Flathead Lake in Northwest Montana, 40 miles from the entrance to Glacier National Park and just 30 minutes from Kalispell Airport. It is surrounded by forest and extremely private but easily accessible by a privately maintained road, just 10 minutes from Hwy 93. This is the perfect place for those eager to explore the beauty of 'The Last Great Place'--world class hiking in Glacier Park, Jewel Basin, fishing the wild and scenic Flathead rivers, boating on Flathead Lake, golfing nearby beautiful courses, and horseback riding, etc. In fact, as the local magazine is titled, there are '101 Things to Do in the Flathead Valley'. The quaint old logging village of Somers just down the hill is across the Lake from the famous art community of Bigfork. Somers boasts several very good restaurants and Lakeside just a few miles away along the lake has a great brewery and a coffee cafe with the best cinnamon rolls ever! What is noteworthy however, are the spectacular views from the studio, with huge plate glass windows--it is like you are on deck of a ship you feel so close above the lake--it is truly a one of a kind place to stay. The studio is perfectly decorated with collections of art and furniture from around the world. The studio has everything in it for the gourmet cook and a beautiful redwood deck for those wanting to dine al fresco during warm summer evenings. The owner takes great pride in keeping 'Achewa' a real 'home away from home'.
