Located on a very quiet, private dirt road, this 2 Bedroom Ranch with a large screened-in porch is directly on the water of Lake Champlain. It is in a protected bay called 'The Gut'. Gorgeous views and sunsets, looking west. 30 minutes to Burlington and 45 minutes to the Canadian Border. Walk to Marina to rent boats, walk to the Drawbridge, excellent fishing. Bed arrangements: Double bed in one bedroom, twin beds in the second bedroom, screened-in porch with two bunk beds and ping pong table.

Special Features: HDTV, Comcast Internet, Boat Ramp, 65 Foot Dock, Ping Pong table on the screened porch, Bar-B-Q on the 25 foot deck. Enjoy sitting on the deck watching the sunsets and on going water activities. Drawbridge close by for great fishing. Large front yard for sports games, such as, volley ball, croquet. Fireplace living room with HDTV, DVR and DVD. Movie library with about 50 movies to choose. Washer/Dryer available.


One downshifts upon arrival at the two-town island community of South Hero and Grand Isle on Lake Champlain. There are speed zones to observe, certainly, but also many bicyclists to respect, for this is a cycling Eden. But mostly you slow down psychologically, almost automatically. That’s because the island has all the soothing attributes of any seashore community but with one major difference: Instead of ocean expanse, one gazes across water at summits, the Green Mountains over which the sun rises, the Adirondacks over which it sets. There are winding country roads to explore; and farmers’ markets, orchards, produce kiosks (honor system), ice cream stands, art galleries, and even a winery that beckon you to stop. Grand Isle is full of speed bumps, all welcome.


For fine dining in a sporty atmosphere, try the Blue Paddle Bistro (316 US Route 2, South Hero, 802-372-4814, entrees $15 to $28, open for dinners Tuesday-Sunday, brunches Sundays on holiday weekends. For terrific hand-cut fries and other fried foods stop at Kim’s Snack Bar (corner of Routes 314 and 2, Grand Isle, no phone or website). Two spots for formal dining require a short drive across a drawbridge to another island, North Hero, to Shore Acres Inn & Restaurant (237 Shore Acres Drive, 802-372-8722, entrees $18.95-$37.95) and The North Hero House Inn & Restaurant (3643 Route 2, 802-372-4732, entrees $22-$27), both offering lakeside views.


Bikers can enjoy the views along Grand Isle. While vacationing at the lakeshore it’s hard not to think occasionally of fish or other critters of the deep. For a sense of what’s below Champlain’s surface, stop by the visitor center at the Ed Weed Fish Culture Station, a state hatchery (14 Bell Hill Road, Grand Isle, 802-372-3171, open 8-4 daily, including holidays, for self-guided tours). Visitors can view Champlain’s most common fish species, feed fingerlings in their tanks, and stroll along the banks of a pond, occasionally catching a glimpse of osprey and other lakeshore birds. If art’s your thing, check out Grand Isle Art Works (259 Route 2, Grand Isle, 802-378-4591, open Monday-Saturday 10-4, but until 8 on Thursday, Sunday 9-3; café hours Tuesday-Saturday 10-3, dinners Thursday evenings), a gallery in a 1797 farmhouse featuring the works of some 75 Vermont painters and crafts people. For a dessert or to spoil your appetite, stop at Vermont Nut Free Chocolates (10 Island Circle, Grand Isle, 802-372-4654) for specialty chocolates made without nuts or peanuts, a special blessing for anyone with nut allergies. And for some history? Consider one of the oldest log cabins in North America, the Hyde Log Cabin, a state historic site (Route 2, Grand Isle, just north of the intersection with Hyde Road, open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 11-5). The small cabin, with furnishings, was built around 1783 by a Revolutionary War veteran, Jedediah Hyde, whose descendants lived in the structure over the course of 150 years. And, finally, all followers of the apple-a-day adage, should consider Hackett’s Orchard (86 South St., South Hero, 802-372-4848, www.hacketsorchard@myfair or Allenholm Farm (111 South St., South Hero, 802-372-5566, offering a “petting paddock” of farm animals for kids) Both orchards also sell varieties of berries, fruits and vegetables, plus ice cream, cider, maple syrup and other Vermont food specialties. Hackett’s Orchard in South Hero offers fresh produce.


Face it, after a day at the beach or hours of bicycling, you may not be in the mood for a raucous nightlife — which is good because all options on the island are low key. One might visit to Snow Farm Vineyard (190 West Shore Road, South Hero, 802-372-9463) on an evening of tastings or musical performances. For frothy Vermont brews, and a chance to watch the Red Sox on the flat-screen, try McKee’s Island Pub & Pizza (513 Route 2, South Hero, 802-372-5454) McKee’s, offering subs, pasta, and salads, is also a good place to take the family for dinner. And if it’s really the simplest of pleasures you’re pursuing, you can stand in line at Seb’s Snack Bar (295 Route 2, South Hero, 802-372-6611), an island institution, for a close-up view of Americana and a “creemee,” ice cream cone, shake, or float.

We just got back from a great week. The house was great. Just what my family & I needed.

The one issue that came up was an accident involving a window screen & a soccer ball. The ball was kicked through one of the screens in the bedroom facing the road. It happened yesterday so I couldn't get it fixed for you. Sorry about that. Obviously deduct the damages from the deposit.

Beyond that, everything was great! We hit Ticonderoga, Echo lake aquarium, Shelburne Museum, VT Teddybear factory. Ate at McKee's a couple of times as well. Having the grill was tremendous as well. Grilled burgers, dogs & steaks 2 or 3 times.

Anyway, sorry about the screen & thanks again for everything.

Thank you for a lovely stay in Grand Isle! The property was very peaceful and well-maintained, and had a homey feel. Easy to get into Burlington and Montreal, but a restful place to come home to!

Gorgeous view, incredible sunsets!

The first night we experienced the most spectacular sunset, but they were all pretty impressive! The view of the Adirondacks is gorgeous-which isn't in the listing, and should be;). Awesome dock to fish from, and the cabin's paddle boat was an awesome addition to the kayaks we brought. The store close by has everything you may need. Plenty of places to sleep, and the cabin had great amenities-flat screen TV and WiFi. Kids liked the ping pong table and bunk beds on screened-in porch. Nice little picnic table out on the lawn and plenty of room on the deck to sit as well. It was awesome having a grill to use. The only small drawback, are the weeds in the water. The further you went out, the more plentiful the weeds. That being said-we totally enjoyed our stay and would come back! John was very communicative and everything was just as described. The Blue Paddle Bistro in South Hero is a lovely restaurant-good food, but a tad pricey. Mostly we just hang out at the property- fished, kayaked, ate delicious food, enjoyed some cocktails, and visited with family and friends-the perfect relaxing vacation. Thank you, John!

rustic and wonderful

This beachfront home on Lake Champlain has warmth, a wonderful location, astounding sunsets. It's clearly a family's spot for family outings, and the pictures, fish stories, etc in the home make it feel like you've been invited to someone's beach house. It's not fancy, so no frills, but the kitchen had all we needed. We went in late October, and there was still plenty of leaf-peeping for us. I imagine it would be stunning in the summer. The owner was very responsive by email, left lots of info on places to eat, etc., and we would love to visit again.

Hi John,

We had a good stay at your families' cabin. Everything was clean and convenient. The sleeping porch worked out well for our visitors. We particularly enjoyed the view over to North Hero, the farm stand across the Island, and visiting with friends.

Great fishing vacation!

We enjoyed our stay here very much. We loved being right on the water and the convenience for fishing was great. The kitchen is very well stocked and easy to cook in. The home was very clean, though rustic, and could use a bit of updating. It was a very quiet time of year which made it very enjoyable. We love Lake Champlain and will definitely stay at this home again.

There is a Marina, Ladds Marina, within a 10 minute walk. You can rent power boats and sail boats and fish off the pier. Ask for Dan or Emily and mention my name. A&B a local grocery store is 2 miles away. You can get everything there from fishing licenses to gas, newspapers, beer and wine and the best Green Mountain coffee on Grand Isle. Keelars Bay is the only liquor store and about 7 miles from A&B heading south towards Burlington on the left. There is a North Hero State Park with a nice sandy beach a walk away over the drawbridge. North Hero is where you can rent bikes. There is a state run fish hachery on Grand Isle that kids would enjoy. About 10,000 trout that they raise and let loose in Lake Champlain. There is a winery on the Grand Isle called Snowfarm Winery. In July and August on Thursday night, they have a wine tasting and free concert. Great for the kids and adults. Both are about 4 miles from the house. Visit Lake Champlain Chocolates 750 Pine St in Burlington. Tours M-Sat. 9-2, Sunday 12-5. Beach walk, region's longest sandy beach at Alburg Dunes State Park, 151 Coon Point Road, Alburg. A couple of places to have a nice dinner are The Blue Paddle, and Shore Acres Restaurant at 237 Shore Acres Drive, North Hero. Great pizza and bar at McKee's about 3 miles heading south on the right. The Canada border is about 35 minutes North on Rte 2. There is a Parc Safari located in Hemmingford Quebec where you drive your car through and enjoy the animals. About 10 minute from the Border is the Zoo and also some rides for the kids. The Grand Isle Ferry that goes to New York is about 10 minutes away.
