About Nerissa Wong-VanHaren

We hope you will make many wonderful memories in the house and treat it as you would your own. We enjoy sharing our little slice of paradise with you.

Nerissa Wong-VanHaren purchased this villa in 1999

Why Nerissa Wong-VanHaren chose Kailua

Kailua is the true Hawaii -- friendly, relaxed, and natural. The beach is beautiful and sandy, the waves are calm enough to be safe, but big enough to be fun and interesting. We love the small town feel of Kailua, but also enjoy being so close (30 mins) to 'town' (Honolulu) and the variety of activities that Oahu has to offer. We love hiking Olomana or Lanikai ridge (5 mins away), carrying our longboards down to the end of the north beach to surf at a break called Castles, bodyboarding in front of the house, kayaking to the Mokulua Islands, and exploring the tidepools & natural baths, and just walking on the long, sandy beach. There are great restaurants and shopping right in Kailua, and every imaginable watersport available, from kitesurfing to outrigger canoeing, without the crowds or the touristy feel of Waikiki. We hope to move back someday!

What makes this villa unique

On full moon nights, when the moon is large and low on the horizon, it lights up the beach like a searchlight. The water shimmers and sparkles, and the sand reflects and glows. It is truly magical.

One new moon night, when the beach was almost pitch dark, we went for a walk and saw tiny glowing blue specks in the sand. Little constellations of stars were under our feet, and lit up when we stepped. They were bioluminescent plankton washing ashore! Totally harmless and amazingly beautiful.

Only by staying on the beach do you have the luxury of never having to find parking and or having to lug your cooler, towels, and bodyboards from the car. You can easily take a walk at sunset, or after dark under the moon. Perhaps part of your group wants to go to the beach, but others want to lounge by the pool, and the baby needs a nap. No problem. Everyone can be happy.

The Best! Beautiful, peaceful property!

  • 5 of 5

We love to travel and this was the first time using VRBO to rent a place to stay so far from home. We were a little nervous, but from the first contact to the end of our stay we were made to feel very comfortable. What a beautiful home. We had to keep pinching ourselves that this was for real. There were 9 in our party and there was plenty of room for everyone. Every morning started with coffee and a beautiful sunrise on the beach, which is just a short walk out the door.

Afternoons were spent exploring. We started with a bus tour of the whole island, which I recommend, you can pick the places that interest you and then spend time at them on your own during the rest of your vacation. We decided to go to the Polynesian Cultural Center, the Dole Plantation, Kualoa Ranch (where we were brave and went ziplining!) & Paradise Cove for the best luau!

There is so much to see and do, but even if you don't leave the property, you can walk the beach, body surf, swim in the pool, cook out your meals on the BBQ they provide. If you are looking for a beautiful place to spend your vacation this is it. I highly recommend it.

I have to say, this was the best vacation ever! Thank you so much for sharing your lovely home with us!

Home-Based Resort in Paradise!!!

  • 4 of 5

This property was amazing! And the pool made it all that much more enjoyable. Watching sunrise from the beach in the morning was a perfect way to start the day. We had 10 adults and 4 children and it was great to all be together around the pool and also great that there were enough out of the way spaces to get some quiet time.

Only drawback was the air-conditioning. The kitchen had none and was extremely warn when cooking. Opening the roof vent would have p[ossibly made a difference, but that was not allowed. A few of the air-con units in the bedrooms were somewhat loud during the night. need to realize we werte there during the island's hottest month. Despite this, if we head back for another family reunion, this would be our first choice!

Very Nice Home On the beach

  • 4 of 5

I have rented a few homes on Oahu. Most of the reasonably priced homes were built in the sixties and have no central heat or air conditioning. This is important to me because these homes get musty, muggy, and uncomfortable. This home had window air conditioning in all the bedrooms which was really nice. My family was able to sleep at night comfortably. The house was very clean, the beds were comfortable and all the appliances were new.(Note to owner the dishwasher is broken. its takes hours to wash). The pool was cold but the pool boy turned up the heat and it was better. It is a large property right on the #1 beach in the world. It has all kinds of boogie boards, a barbecue and much more. it was really nice. I asked my family if they would stay here again and they all said yes.

Our Big Family Holiday on Oahu

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 10 adults and 2 small children had a wonderful time at the beach house. From the personal 'meet and greet' with Mrs Wong and the caretakers until the last day, we felt that we were able to really call this our home away from home.

The setting was spectacular, to be able to have your morning coffee on the beach was truly luxurious! The grounds were well maintained and the pool was a welcome relief. The layout of the house enabled everyone to have their own space but also created much needed family time. Our grandchildren loved being able to run around the yard and playing ball with their uncles (think the uncles were worn out!).

The close proximity of the supermarkets was a pleasant surprise, an easy 10 minute walk if you didn't feel like taking the car out. We loved seeing more of the island that just the 'touristy' spots.

We will definitely come back and stay here next time, hopefully we can stay a little longer!

Great House for Ohana trip

  • 5 of 5

My family enjoyed staying at this house immensely. The beautiful Kailua beach outside the property is an incredible bonus, and the open concept kitchen, dining room and outdoor space is conducive to family enjoyment. Having the 2 refrigerators and 2 ovens in the main kitchen is truly an asset when feeding a large group. The children enjoyed having the family room for their electronics use, games, and movies while the adults could converse in the inside dining room or the outdoor area. We spent most days exploring the island, going to the Pearl Harbor Memorial, hiking, the North Shore, etc. but were grateful to return to relax around the pool. Thank you for the incredible house for our stay.

Not Long Enough!

  • 5 of 5

The long planning and excitement that went into a much anticipated family vacation to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary was realized when we stayed in this lovely home and property. The size of the house, privacy, and location right on beautiful Kailua beach were perfect. Our grandchildren couldn't get enough of the waves right out the front door and when the sun went down, they swam in the beautiful pool. The little wading pool at one end of the pool was a perfect bonus for the 18 month old. Most of the meals were prepared in the newly remodeled kitchen. The two refrigerators and two ovens are a great asset when you are feeding 14. We ate many of our meals out by the pool, but were happy to have the convenience of the long table and chairs in the dining area. A portable or small island type table might make a good addition to the kitchen. During our stay we had an issue that needed repair, however, the repairman was prompt and the inconvenience minimal. Many of our days were spent at the house, but when we did venture, nothing was too far away…the Whole Foods grocery store in downtown Kailua, Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, various hiking trails, and the north shore, where we had fun experiencing Giovanni's Shrimp Truck and shaved ice. If the opportunity ever presents itself to repeat a visit to Oahu, there would be no question we would return to this property. It is obvious this house is a family intended home. Thank you Nerissa and Rita for helping our family create memories to last a life time.
