Aloha! Ted and I have lived in Hawaii for 30 years. Ted is a high school science teacher in a local rural school. He is also an avid amateur astronomer & geologist. He is a penguin person & many of our vacations revolve around viewing wild penguins. Ted has a private pilot's license & is crazy about impact craters, tall mountains & Antarctica (he has visited there twice!). He is former Peace Corps Nepal & did a lot of climbing. He is fluent in Spanish, Nepalese & English. He reads Sanskrit. Ted is also a HAM radio operator. I (Lisa) am an international nature conservation & ecotourism expert. I often work with indigenous peoples in remote locations. I have worked in Sarawak, Borneo; the Australian outback; Palau; Bali, Thailand, the Bahamas & the Marshall Islands. I was once a USFWS Park Ranger on Midway Atoll. Albatross galore! I love hiking, kayaking, & am a PADI Dive Master & HAM too. I speak German & Spanish. Both Ted and I love to read, garden & travel. We enjoy birding & observing wildlife. We've been all over the world including Europe, South America, Antarctica, Asia, Australia & the Pacific - with our most recent favorite places being Cusco, Meteora, London & the bottom of the Grand Canyon! The photo is of us on the train to Machu Picchu in the summer of 2017. We love critters & have one dog & two cats. We really enjoy making your stay with us special! Please read our reviews!
Ted purchased this Cottage in 2017
Why Ted chose Volcano Village
This property reminded us of many of the cabins when we were on family trips way back when. We walked in and felt right at home with all the windows, the dark wood floors and the rustic styled kitchen and its white porcelain sink. The house was just the right for two people on holiday. The tall trees captured my heart as did the huge ornamental cherry tree in the back. We hope you like it as much as we do!
What makes this Cottage unique
Sleeping in late Listening to the birds in the morning Hot, hot showers - ahhhhh Admiring all the orchids inside the cottage Admiring all the flowers outside the cottage Reading by the warmth of the fire table on the covered deck while it's drizzling rain Wondering if you might see a wild pig on the road! (We have!!) Sunning yourself on the front lawn Walking to the Volcano morning market on a Sunday morning Enjoying the 6 minute drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Being in Volcano Hawaii!!! O'yeah!

This cottage in a beautiful garden felt like home. Loved the decorating in colorful textiles and many types of orchids throughout the house. The views from every window were of ferns, trees, orchids, etc. It had all of the amenities that we could have asked for. Great location for visiting the volcano, Hilo, and all of the attractions on this side of the island. Great farmers market and good restaurants in Volcano Village.
Thank you so much for you wonderful review. I grow most of those orchids myself and enjoy sharing them with our guests. Volcano Village is the location of choice for most visitors too as it is sooo close to the Park, making it easy to pop into Volcano House's Rim Restaurant or to hear an evening lecture at the Kilauea Visitor Center. It was such a pleasure to meet you. We hope you will return one day to celebrate another birthday! Until we meet again, safe journeys! Ted and Lisa
Charming hideaway on the volcano
This place was delightful! Lisa and Ted were fantastic hosts who really care about their guests and property. This rental is tucked away in on leafy street and is very private. There are orchids and tons of Hawaiian plants, all labeled. Lots of books and games to play. Very cozy and romantic getaway. I would 100% book a repeat visit.
homey, loved, well appointed, everything we needed and more!
lisa and ted, mahalo fornyou loving attention to everything in your hale. we enjoyed ourselves, and know we’ll be back! volcano is magic, and our stay in your home was part of that magic! mahalo

At Explorer's Rest you are in backcountry Hawaii!
Hapuu ferns and flowering trees surround the charming but spacious cottage. A glass-fronted propane fireplace keeps you warm on cool evenings, and the drinking water is (purified and filtered) rain from the roof (the cottage is electrified). The brown hardwood floors and the home-made wooden kitchen cabinets (brown doors on white cabinets) evoke a simpler lifestyle of the past. Lisa and Ted have given much thought and effort to making one's stay comfortable. Pumpkin bread and pecan pralines were left quietly outside the door. The study contains an enchanting library of Hawaii and astronomy. Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park is close by, and the village of Volcano has interesting shops.
Thank you so much for your great review. We really enjoyed having you stay at Explorer's Rest. We are happy you had a wonderful stay and look forward to your return one day. Don't worry, the item you left accidently will be in a box and placed in the mail to you today. Safe travels and come back soon!

Exceptional location for peace and quiet. Surrounded by tropical flowers and trees.
Lisa and Ted were wonderful hosts. Attentive to our every need and went above and beyond with daily treats. The home is clean and inviting. We felt at home immediately and could just relax. Our first night we listened to the rain while sitting by the fire on the lani and drinking wine. We loved the orchids that filled the home. We will be back.
Aww Kim, thank you so much for the kind words and great review. We really enjoyed having you stay. Come back soon! Safe travels! Aloha, Lisa & Ted
lovely and homey cottage in the rainforest
We highly recommend staying at this house. It was a lovely place in a delightful community. The host does a lot both before and after you arrive to make sure you have everything you need. We immediately felt at home in the house and the neighborhood. The farmer's market on Sunday was so much fun, and everyone was very friendly. The kitchen is well stocked with staples and I was extremely impressed with how clean and bug free this place was. It is in a quiet neighborhood, feels very private, and was just the relaxing retreat we needed to start off our vacation. So many details make this place a treasure - the orchids, the fireplace on the lanai, the umbrellas, the little notes, the robes and slippers, the books ..... We blew lots of bubbles and if we can make it back we will definitely be staying here and for a longer period of time.
Thank you so much for your fabulous review Leilani. We try very hard to make your time with us at Explorer's Rest special. You were a pleasure to host and we look forward to your return. Blowing those bubbles on the lanai ensures it :-)
Safe travels until we see you again!

Aloha! Volcano Village is a quiet community, full of trees and flowers. Often I see I'o, our native hawk, in the area either perched or flying across an open space. Apapane and Kalej pheasant (non-native) are also common. We have Kazamura Lava tube nearby, the longest known lava tube in the world. Vireyas, orchids, tree ferns and the flowering Ohia are plentiful. The entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - with all its trails, the famous Volcano Art Center and Volcano Rim Restaurant - is only 6 minutes away from our cottage. Punuluu Black Sand Turtle Beach is 25 minutes away. The town of Hilo is about 30 minutes downhill from Volcano Village. So what are our must-do activities? Kazumura Lava Tube, Kilauea Iki trail, a visit to Volcano Garden Arts, Akatsuka Orchid Garden, visiting the Park, searching for Nene (our endangered goose) and walking up a piece of Mauna Loa Strip road (starting at the cattle guard - gorgeous!)
